Ashiya is a full-time lecturer in the Tokyo Media Arts department at Takarazuka University where he teaches classes in animation content production.[3] Other series Ashiya has worked on include Dr. Stone, Golden Kamuy, Mob Psycho 100, Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, and Lupin the Third.
Biography

Born in Hokkaido, Japan, Kohei Ashiya always had a passion for manga and films ever since he was a child.[4] Ashiya was inspired to become an artist after watching the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA series during high school.[4]

After graduating from university, Ashiya dreamed of becoming a manga artist and was preparing to make his debut. However, he was approached by a former tutor from his university who asked him to help teach a lecture about animation.[4] While lecturing at the university and working in the animation industry, one of his older JoJo's Bizarre Adventure drawings caught the attention of officials who wanted him to work as an animation director for the newest adaption of the series.[4] Since then, Ashiya has been heavily involved with David Production and has worked closely with chief animation director and character designers Takako Shimizu and Masahiko Komino, assisting them with their designs as well as working as an assistant director. Ashiya's favorite characters from the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series are Joseph Joestar and Bruno Bucciarati,[5] and his favorite Stands are Sticky Fingers and Bad Company.[6] His favorite part is also Vento Aureo.[7] According to Ashiya, the easiest characters for him to draw were Jean Pierre Polnareff, Okuyasu Nijimura, and Kars.[8]
In 2022, Ashiya worked as an animation director for the films The First Slam Dunk and One Piece Film: Red.
Controversy
On September 17, 2019, Ashiya wrote a thread on Twitter claiming that he hadn't been paid for his work on the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind anime despite the final episode having aired over two months prior.[9] He later made a Tweet reporting that, although the matter had not been fully resolved yet, he was able to get in touch with the producer and finally received payment for his work. However, due to the controversy surrounding his statement, Ashiya worried that he might not be allowed to participate in future JoJo-related productions. Ashiya also mentioned that he had already not been invited to work on the next Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan project which was underway.[10]
