Mamoru Miyano
Mamoru Miyano (宮野 真守, Miyano Mamoru) is a Japanese voice actor, actor, and singer. He is credited as the actor of Dio Brando in the stage musical adaptation of Phantom Blood, as well as the narrator in promotional videos for The JOJOLands and JOJO magazine 2023 WINTER.[1][2]
Miyano is also best known for providing the voices of Light Yagami in Death Note, Osamu Dazai in Bungo Stray Dogs, Chrollo Lucifer in the 2011 remake of Hunter × Hunter, Tamaki Suoh in Ouran High School Host Club Death the Kid in Soul Eater, Rin Matsuoka in Free!, Setsuna Seiei in the Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Zero Kiryu in Vampire Knight, and Douma in Kimetsu no Yaiba.
In video games, he is known for his roles as Rintaro Okabe in Steins;Gate, Ryuji Sakamoto in Persona 5, and Ignis Scientia in Final Fantasy XV, as well as in their anime adaptations.
Biography
Miyano was born in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, on June 8, 1983. He began his acting career in 1990 with his first credited role being an unnamed character on Special Rescue Exceedraft in 1992. He debuted as a voice actor in a dubbing role for the American drama Caitlin's Way in 2001, while he debuted in video games as Riku in Kingdom Hearts. He received his first anime role in the anime adaptation of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children in 2002.
His breakthrough role was Light Yagami in the TV anime adaptation of Death Note in 2006, where he was nominated for the "Best Actor in leading role" and "Best Rookie Actors" categories during the 1st Seiyu Awards — he would later win the former award for Setsuna F. Seiei in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and Hakugen Rikuson in Kōtetsu Sangokushi during the 2008 2nd Seiyu Awards.[3] He won his first "Best Voice Actor" award in 2008 during the 7th Annual Tokyo Anime Awards for his roles as Light Yagami and Setsuna F. Seiei.[4]
Miyano is also a singer, having released his first single titled "Eternity" (久遠, Kuon) in 2007 under King Records Japan. He released his debut album Break in 2009, and has released seven albums as of 2024. He has cited CHEMISTRY and EXILE as his musical influences.[5]
Aside from singing and voice acting, Miyano is also a theater performer, and has been a member of the Himawari Theatre Group since he was seven years old.[5]
In 2008, he revealed that he was married, and his wife gave birth to his son months after his announcement.[6] On December 21, 2023, he officially announced his divorce after fifteen years of marriage.[7]
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Miyano is a fan of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and has been reading the manga series since he was a student.[8] He had previously auditioned for several roles in the anime adaptations, but he never imagined that his first gig with the franchise would be in a musical role. During the press conference for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood, he expressed his gratitude in being casted as Dio Brando for the musical, even quoting Dio's cronies in the third chapter of the manga.[9][10]
