Hol Horse and Boingo, Part 2 (ホル·ホースとボインゴ その2, Horu Hōsu to Boingo Sono Ni)[1] is the thirty-seventh episode of Stardust Crusaders, the thirteenth episode of the Egypt Arc, and the sixty-third episode of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime. It covers most of Chapter 219 through Chapter 221 of the manga.

Hol Horse and Boingo's ordeal continues. After following Tohth's predictions, Hol Horse is doesn't know what to do as he's stuck his fingers inside of Polnareff's nose and the rest of the Joestar Group approaches.

Summary

Following the prediction laid out by Tohth, Hol Horse sticks his fingers in Polnareff's nose but has no idea how to follow it up. Worse, Joseph, Jotaro and Avdol are closing in on his position.

Polnareff tries to point at Hol Horse with his tongue

Hol Horse manages to hold Polnareff at point blank range with Emperor and thus hides in a corner behind him, instructing the Frenchman to make the group leave or be shot. Polnareff nonetheless tries to tip off the others by pointing his tongue behind him but no one understands what he is doing. When Avdol asks out loud what is going on, Hol Horse understands he's being denounced and tries to shoot Polnareff. However, Polnareff suddenly sneezes due to the irritation his nose has suffered and the gunslinger is uncovered. Upon being exposed, Hol Horse spills some olive oil. While the Joestar Group surrounds him, the man Hol Horse has shot in the ear earlier sees the gunslinger. Angry, the man tries to drive his truck into him, but the olive oil causes his truck to skid out of control and crash into the Joestar Group.

Boingo's comic book predicts Jotaro "getting shot"

As predicted, Hol Horse has now an opportunity and waits for Tohth's prediction to guarantee his chances. However, Jotaro is still conscious and now on guard. The book then predicts that Hol Horse will bribe two workers and shoot in the pipes at high noon sharp, allowing the bullets to fly through Jotaro's head. With only two minutes until noon, the duo rushes to get the pipes open and launch their bullets through it. However, Polnareff then comes out and sneezes on Jotaro, making him recoil in disgust and the bullets surprisingly miss their target.

Hol Horse's bullets fly back at him and the book

Shocked, Hol Horse realizes too late that it was because his watch was a minute too fast but also lets his bullets fly back at him, piercing Jotaro's image in the comic book. Hol Horse is shot in the face himself, although it is revealed that he's made the bullets disappear in time to prevent his death. Hol Horse is definitely retired. Just as Boingo considers a change of heart, he inadvertently ends up angering Iggy and winds up hospitalized along with Hol Horse.

Manga/Anime Differences

  • The sequence where Jotaro, Joseph and Avdol is lengthened, with several shots of a worried Hol Horse being added.
  • The scene where the truck tries to run over Hol Horse is foreshadowed by a shot of its tires, and the audience is reminded of the reason its owner is trying to crash into Hol Horse with a flashback sequence.
  • When Hol Horse shoots into the pipe, several shots of them travelling inside are added.

Commentary

Following the gag episode is another gag episode of course. (laughs) The idea is to look at the characters struggle, only for them to manage to accomplish nothing. Here, no matter everyone's initiatives, they are like the Stand, Thoth's toys. It's particularly true for Hol Horse who repeatedly and miserably fails without being able to do something about it. The poor guy is decidedly unlucky and even ends up in the hospital. At least he survived; surely a little speck of luck in the middle of his misfortune. This episode marks the end of the comical sequence; time to get serious. But just as the manga has kept things here and there to decrease the tension, the TV series will try to not become excessively serious. It is again an episode with a special ending. They were all story-boarded by Yasufumi Soejima. He did this extravagant request even though he was still busy with work, but he's still offered these burlesque endings and I am very grateful to him.
