This article is about season one of the anime. For the anime adaptation as a whole, see JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険, JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken) is the first season of the television anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation, produced by David Production and Warner Bros. Japan. It is an adaptation of Parts 1 and 2 of the manga, Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency, respectively. It was first announced on July 5, 2012 at the Hirohiko Araki JoJo Exhibition 2012. The season aired over the course of 26 episodes from October 5, 2012 to April 5, 2013.

Creation and Development

The first season of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime adaptation was greenlit in 2011, and was planned to adapt the first two parts of the manga. However, pre-production for the first season did not begin until as late as March 2012.[1]

After recieving the offer to animate the JoJo project, producer Hisataka Kasama decided to hire more than one director for the series, despite such a practice being very uncommon in the anime industry at the time. The two chosen directors were Naokatsu Tsuda and Kenichi Suzuki, for their comedic and action direction skills respectively. After Tsuda was chosen, he admitted he probably would not have agreed to work on the project if it weren't for his partnership with Suzuki, overwhelmed at the prospect of helming a series as big as JoJo on his own. Suzuki, however, was less hesitant to participate, excited to present his own spin on the JoJo series. After the directors were chosen, Yasuko Kobayashi was added to the team as the series's screenwriter after a recommendation from Shueisha's editorial department, and Yasufumi Soejima was brought on as a visual director.

By the time production on the series began, the core team was composed of Tsuda, Suzuki, Kasama, Omori, Kobayashi and Soejima. The team decided to follow the source material down to every minute detail, one of them being the unique onomatopoeia used in the manga. The team felt that if they didn't follow the manga so faithfully and resorted to using general anime production techniques, it would no longer be JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, but rather JoJo's Ordinary Adventure. The guidelines the team set for themselves in the first production meeting became a sort of overall guide for how the series would be produced moving forward throughout future seasons.[2]

Distribution

The media distribution service Crunchyroll obtained the streaming license for the season after its initial airing, releasing the Blu-ray edition of the anime with English subtitles on its website on April 4, 2014.[3] In 2015, it was announced that director Naokatsu Tsuda would premiere an English dub of the season at that year's Anime Expo, later to be released on DVD by Warner Bros.[4] VIZ Media would later release the English dub on Blu-ray.[5] On July 21, 2016, it was revealed that the English dub would begin airing on Adult Swim's Toonami block on October 15, 2016,[6] concluding on April 15, 2017.

Re-Edited

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Re-Edited is a compilation of the first season that condenses all 26 episodes into three film-length features. The first film highlights the events of Phantom Blood, while the other two summarize Battle Tendency. The Re-Edited edition omits several scenes, but includes newly-recorded narration to fill in gaps in the story. Several sound effects have also been replaced or updated. The physical release also includes multiple discs containing all 35 interviews of JOJOraDIO, a web radio program hosted by Yoji Ueda.
