"Dig up every root and leaf. Keep your eyes peeled..." I get the part about digging up roots, I really do. Roots are buried within the soil, after all... But what the hell does it mean to dig up a leaf?!
Ghiaccio, Golden Wind Wafer Set 2

Head to Venice! (ヴェネツィアに向かえ!, Venetsia ni Mukae!)[1] is the eighteenth episode of Golden Wind and the one hundred thirty first episode of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation. The episode covers from the end of Chapter 506 to Chapter 510 of the original manga.

Giorno's battle against Baby Face reaches its end. Meanwhile, the irascible Ghiaccio steadily closes in on the heroes as they approach their final destination: Venice.

Summary

Ghiaccio is getting close to the battlefield and informs his leader Risotto Nero, who leaves the matter in his hand. For his part, Risotto keeps threatening a computer expert to perform some analysis. In response to the man's warning about rebelling against the gang, the assassin somehow grievously injures his hand and eye, using an unknown ability.

Giorno defeats Baby Face

Thanks to his ingenuity, Giorno has turned the tables on Baby Face's child to Melone's astonishment. While the piranha turns back into Gold Experience's hand, Giorno analyzes his advantageous position and the heavily injured Baby Face is overcome by rage. Melone tells Baby Face to hide and wait for reinforcement but the homunculus  is so angered it rebels and decides to attack Giorno alone. Baby Face launches a punch whom Gold Experience easily avoids, followed by a karate chop that takes him by surprise. Baby Face's reach is indeed extending as it is now growing into an adult. Resummoning its hand, Gold Experience punches Baby Face's cheek which turns into a hand grabbing the fist. Proud of its trick, it attacks but is suddenly brought down, weighted by the motorcycle that Giorno had turned into a hand and let it absorb as another trick. Before it can transform, Baby Face finds himself covered in oil which the bike's spark plug lights aflame and is defeated. Giorno has won and deals a finishing blow.

A venomous snake bites Melone, killing him

Later, Ghiaccio arrives at the parking lot, noticing the many stolen cars and suddenly starting a linguistic rant. The assassin immediately calls Melone for clarification just as the latter leaves the express train, arrived in Roma. Armed with fresh knowledge about Giorno, Melone plans to create yet another Baby Face but is suddenly confronted by a venomous snake that bites him, killing him on the spot. Seeing that they've been alone on the roads for a good time, Team Bucciarati deems that they have officially escaped their pursuers. However, Nero contacts Ghiaccio with fresh information.

Moody Blues reenacts Pericolo's actions as instructed by The Boss

Inside of Coco Jumbo, Bucciarati receives an order to rewind Moody Blues to fourteen hours ago next to the dining chair. Moody Blues turns into Pericolo, who retroactively instructs the team how to transfer Trish to the Boss in Venice. Showing a photograph of Venice's train station and the winged lion statue in front of it, the capo tells the team to approach the statue and obtain an OA-DISC before destroying the photography. Expressing gratitude to the Boss, Pericolo then commits suicide by shooting himself out of the turtle with a revolver. The group now has a secondary objective to fulfill in Venice. Meanwhile in Venice, the mysterious Boss patiently awaits the delivery of his daughter.

Team Bucciarati splits in two and thus Giorno and Mista are sent together to retrieve the disc. At 4:43 AM on an especially chilly night, the duo is entering the Ponte della Liberta, the only road connecting Venice to the mainland. Suddenly, Giorno briefly loses control of the car as the tires seem to have slipped, propelling Mista (who has been swiping a window) into the left. As the mist on the windows is getting thicker and Giorno decides to open a window, Mista realizes with horror that his little finger has been frozen and has stuck to the ice cold glass on the other side.

Ghiaccio encases himself in a thick layer of ice with his Stand ability

Giorno immediately feels an unnaturally chilling wind coming from outside, as Ghiaccio, who is perched on the roof of the car, confronts the duo and shows the same photo Pericolo has destroyed earlier. For his part, Mista is noticeably beginning to freeze against the window he's stuck on. The gunman shoots through the roof, revealing that Ghiaccio is enveloped in a thick coat of ice so hard the bullets cannot penetrate it. Several of the Sex Pistols are trapped by the ice and worse, the bullet holes let the wind blow inside the car, exposing the duo to lethally low temperatures. Humorously, Ghiaccio begins yet another linguistical rant. Stuck on the wheel and unable to create life forms, Giorno uses Gold Experience on some of the bullets Mista shoots at Ghiaccio, which turn into roots that manage to break through the ice because of the heat of the shooting, which throws the assassin out of the car. Ghiaccio's freezing power stops but Mista sees that Ghiaccio is turning his ice shell into a suit and is rapidly skating toward them.

Impervious to bullets, Ghiaccio catches up unharmed but Sex Pistols suddenly place the bullets beneath Ghiaccio's skates, making him trip. Nonetheless, Ghiaccio then freezes the leaking gas to create a makeshift rope and finally manages to grab Mista by the arm. Gold Experience then tries to pummel Ghiaccio but only manage to crack it. In front of such an invincible enemy, Giorno makes a desperate move and drives the car into the sea.

Manga/Anime Differences

  • A couple of new scenes of Ghiaccio and Risotto Nero are added throughout the episode. Ghiaccio is shown driving and talking to Risotto on the phone, while the latter uses their Stand to force a computer technician to reconstruct the picture that Pericolo burned.
  • Several lines of dialogue between Melone and Baby Face are omitted.
    • After Baby Face is hit, Melone tells it to calm down and that they haven't lost the fight.
    • Melone tells Baby Face to hide and that Ghiaccio and Risotto are on their way.
    • Baby Face becomes angry at Melone and blames him for the plan failing. Melone responds by telling it to calm down.
  • Giorno realizing Baby Face is an Auto-Tracking Stand has been cut.
  • The number of times Giorno says Baby Face gouged him is changed from five to three.
  • When Baby Face grows, originally Melone's screen is shown listing its measurements increasing.
  • Originally, Baby Face's ability wearing off of Bucciarati and Trish is shown before Melone loses contact with Baby Face.
  • When talking to Ghiaccio, Melone is shown looking at a woman and licking his lips. Some dialogue from Ghiaccio is omitted.
  • Melone's death after the venomous snake bit him in the tongue was shown on-screen. In the manga, Melone's death happened off-panel.
    • Ghiaccio is shown hitting his car in reaction to Melone's death. He then gets a call from Risotto, who sends him the reconstructed image.
  • Giorno, Mista and Fugo's conversation about being followed is changed to exposition about the remaining hitmen.
  • The number of hours the Boss asks Abbacchio to rewind Moody Blues is changed from 10 to 14. Abbacchio decides to rewind back around 15 hours.
  • Mista's flashback is omitted with a large portion of it inserted earlier during the Kraft Work fight in GW Episode 8.
  • A scene with Diavolo in the shadows is shown after Pericolo's message. In the manga, this scene takes place after Giorno drives into the canal.
  • Before Giorno tells Mista to shoot Ghiaccio off the roof, Ghiacco can originally be heard asking where Coco Jumbo is.
  • In the scene where Giorno explains that no organism can grow at -100C, Gold Experience is originally shown next to him.
  • Ghiaccio's rant on Venice and Venezia takes place after Giorno and Mista discuss using Gold Experience to escape. In the manga, this happens after Mista unloads his gun the first time.
  • Ghiaccio is shown lying on the ground for a bit before activating his Stand and taking off. In the manga, he activates it mid-fall.
  • After Mista explains that Ghiaccio doesn't know where Trish and Coco Jumbo are, Giorno now comments on Mista's optimism rather than Mista himself commenting.
  • Ghiaccio's impact with the pavement is lengthened and shown in more detail.
  • After Ghiaccio attaches himself to the car, he has a line added that he won't let them get to the station. Originally he stays silent.
  • In the TV broadcast, Mista is not shown taking bullets out of his boot; only the bullets dropping into the barrel of his gun is shown. The original scene has been added to the episode in the Blu-ray episode.

Commentary

Seeing Melone at the station looking like that was hilarious. Isn't he gross? I'm glad he was taken out, for society's sake. He was beaten badly, but I think that's also one of the charms of the episode. The buildup of suspense during the battle against Ghiaccio was great, too. He's quite the character! I like how he answers the phone properly even if he's angry.
Kosuke Toriumi, Blu-ray limited edition commentaries
I treated the sound differently compared to previous seasons, since the show was going to be aired worldwide via simulcast. For example, in violent scenes where those abroad might feel negatively. I contrasted the violence with a combination of Yugo Kanno's music and effects that felt more sublime. I wanted viewers to look forward to what comes next.
—Yoshikazu Iwanami, Blu-ray limited edition commentaries
1. A Restructured Scene

Portions of this episode were changed significantly from the television broadcast to the product version. Director Takahashi states, "It was unfortunate that we had to cut those frames for television. I'm glad we were able to put what episode eighteen is truly supposed to look like on the disc product!"

2. Ghiaccio on the Road

Almost all key frames for Ghiaccio's action sequence were drawn by action animation director Yasutoshi Iwasaki, with only character detail adjustments made by the animation directors. Takahashi was highly satisfied with the results: "We were able to see Iwasaki's captivating lines in action!"

3. The Car Chase

Takahashi and staff researched by watching car chase scenes from various movies where action scenes were not the main focus. "Since we were going to use 3-D for our car, I watched a certain famous street racing anime while doing the storyboards. Before I knew it, I had Eurobeat running in the background."

4. Ponte della Libertà

The manga depicts the car crossing the bridge and driving through the bus terminal, but with Chief Director Tsuda's insight, the scene was changed so that it just dives into the canal. Takahashi: "The simplicity made the scene look great, but when I showed the storyboard to Tsuda, he told me, "The idea was to make things easier, not more elaborate!"
—Hideya Takahashi, Blu-ray limited edition commentaries

Trivia

  • In his car, Ghiaccio rants about the Japanese phrase nehorihahori (根掘り葉掘り), meaning "thoroughly", which is a wordplay on root-digging. However, Crunchyroll's official subtitles indicate that he is ranting about the phrase "taking a leaf out of someone's book". Finally, the English dub has him ranting about the expression "think outside of the box".
