Gold Experience Requiem (ゴールド・E(エクスペリエンス)・レクイエム, Gōrudo Ekusuperiensu Rekuiemu)[1] is the thirty-eighth episode of Golden Wind and the one-hundred-fifty-first episode of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation. The episode covers from Chapter 588 to Chapter 591 of the original manga.

Giorno now possesses Gold Experience Requiem and defeats Diavolo. The story jumps back to the past, presenting the time Mista had to investigate the mysterious death of a florist's daughter.

Summary

Jumping back to the past, Team Bucciarati share a meal together.

Diavolo is beaten by Gold Experience Requiem

Diavolo and King Crimson get heavily pummelled by Gold Experience Requiem and are sent into the Tiber. Mista and Trish are amazed at Giorno's victory but Trish then raises the alarm as she cannot see Diavolo's body. It is shown that Diavolo is now further down the river and is climbing into a sewer, having somehow survived his encounter with Gold Experience Requiem. However, he then meets with a group of homeless men who just injected themselves with drugs. One of the delirious men then stabs Diavolo in the chest in an attempt to protect his coat, which horrifies Diavolo as he finds himself defenseless. Suddenly, Diavolo blacks out and wake up in an unknown room. Confused, Diavolo sees a doctor named Monica Ultello record her operation, which is revealed to be an autopsy on Diavolo himself. Diavolo is unable to move or be heard by Ultello, and watches with horror as she harvests his organs. Diavolo blacks out and now finds himself in the streets. Remembering everything, the once almighty Boss is bewildered by what is happening to him. Startled by a bystander's dog, he moves back but trips into the road and on the path of a speeding car.

Giorno sees the spirits of his friends in the sky

Back to Rome, Trish senses that Diavolo is still alive, but Giorno reassures her that although he doesn't understand Gold Experience Requiem's ability, he is sure that Diavolo is now trapped out of reality himself and is living a neverending demise. Diavolo is last seen in the countryside despairing of his countless deaths and shouting at a little girl to stay away from him. Mista suddenly remembers Bucciarati and, assuming that he's still alive, tells his companions to hurry back to the Colosseum and heal him. Reminded of his partner's death, Giorno feels distressed but then witnesses Bucciarati, Abbacchio and Narancia in the clouds who reassure him about the future. Giorno notices the Arrowhead on the ground.

Back to the flashback, Mista enthusiastically explains how he's deduced that meat from herbivores must be more delicious than the meat from carnivores, meaning that humans must actually taste bad. Bucciarati arrives and informs the team that Leaky-Eye Luca has died and that Polpo has ordered him to investigate the matter. Moreover, Fugo presents a florist to him. The florist explains to Bucciarati that one day, his daughter went to her boyfriend's apartment and then jumped from the roof of the building, clutching a round stone with her. The florist suspects the boyfriend Scolippi, a sculptor by trade, and asks Bucciarati to avenge his daughter in exchange for his life savings.

Mista sees the cursed Rolling Stone

Bruno refuses to simply commit a revenge hit but accepts to investigate the matter and deal justice. Bucciarati tasks Mista to go to the boyfriend. However, Mista suddenly sees a round stone in his seat as he stands up. Mista touches the stone, only to hear someone pleading to be killed. Although Mista is worried, everybody only sees an ordinary stone and urge him to hurry to the parking lot so that Fugo and Bucciarati can drop him off at Scolippi's address. Disturbingly, Mista keeps spotting round stones near him as the group drives to the boyfriend's apartment and mentions this to his team, although his suspicions only confuse them. Fugo and Bucciarati drop Mista off, but Bucciarati then decides to follow Mista to watch over him. Meanwhile, Mista has reached the elevator. Suddenly, he sees the stone inside the elevator and instinctively shoots it. However, the crumbling stone takes the shape of an injured Bucciarati and Scolippi can be seen hiding behind the door of the elevator. Mista thus realizes that a Stand is involved in this case.

Manga/Anime Differences

  • The anime introduces the Sleeping Slaves arc at a slightly earlier point of the story.
    • A scene is added of Narancia spitting out his food in reaction to Mista.
    • Narancia has a line added telling Mista to shut up.
  • A flashback is now shown when Diavolo recalls his fight with Giorno before he crawls into the sewer.
  • Diavolo now laughs as he enters the sewer and is shown crawling through it.
  • The man who attacks Diavolo is now shown approaching him, and before Diavolo blacks out he is shown preparing to stab him again.
  • The scene where Monica Ultello harvests Diavolo's organs is made more elaborate and censored. Diavolo's arms also bear his floral motifs as if they were tattoos instead of parts of his mesh shirt.
    • Medical instruments are shown before Monica begins the autopsy.
    • Monica is shown making an initial incision before removing Diavolo's liver, and blood flowing into a drain.
    • Monica begins cutting into Diavolo with a saw after removing his liver.
  • After Mista suggests returning to the Colosseum, Giorno is no longer shown trembling.
  • Fugo no longer stands up when Bucciarati enters the room.
  • The flower shop owner is shown crying more tears in the manga.
  • When Bucciarati asks Mista to look into the florist's daughter, Fugo is now shown standing at the table rather than sitting.
  • Mista asking the rest of the team if they said something to him after he touched Rolling Stones has been cut.
  • Fugo's line telling Mista he'll drive him has been moved to after Abbacchio tells Mista to put the rock back on the pedestal.
  • On the car ride with Fugo and Bucciarati, Mista originally begins explaining his situation without prompting. Bucciarati now asks him what's wrong before he starts talking.
  • Mista mentioning the stone he sees while on the car ride is the same as the one in the restaurant has been cut.
  • Bucciarati telling Fugo that all he has to do in regard to Leaky-Eye Luca is figure out the cause of death and that neither of these cases will likely amount to much has been cut.

Commentary

1. The Cold-Open Restaurant Sequence

"The episodes I've worked on tend to feature food, and I remember checking the frames thinking, 'Man, that looks good," muses Director Takahashi. Mista, Abbacchio, and Fugo eat steak while Narancia has pumpkin soup. "Narancia also has soup in episode twenty-two. He must really love soup! How cute."

2. Diavolo's Never Ending Death

Gold Experience Requiem causes Diavolo to experience infinite deaths. Each death scene uses a different palette, marking it as one of the episodes with the most color filter changes in the entire series. Takahashi says, "The lettering of Diavolo's last scream in the manga is so memorable, we almost put lettering in that shot in the anime."

3. Mista Talks Meat

"This is the scene we had at Mista's audition," reveals Takahashi. "So this scene is how we chose Kohsuke Toriumi. Hearing him say the lines again for this episode really drove home how far we'd come." The cow, chicken, and pig were drawn cute and comical in the storyboards, so Takahashi asked Director Sho Sugawara to redraw them in Araki's style. "The eyes especially turned-out Araki-esque."

4. Bucciarati and the Flower Shop Owner

The Passione exudes a violent, fearsome image, so why is Bucciarati, one of its members, so trusted by the townspeople? The conversation between Bucciarati and the florist illustrates why. "For families whose emotions are forsaken by the law, Bucciarati, their last resort, is what eases them. I read this part of the manga to solidify my image of a true mafioso."
—Hideya Takahashi, Blu-ray limited edition commentaries
5. One Day in the Life of Bucciarati's Famiglia

The scene is a prologue to Golden Wind. Chief Animation Director Ishimoto notes, "Everyone's here with the exception of Giorno. We put our souls into the animation. Seeing the others just go along with Mista's chatter made me smile. You can tell they really are close. I was surprised to see Abbacchio actually listening to Mista, though."
Shunichi Ishimoto, Blu-ray limited edition commentaries

Trivia

  • In the original TV airing, the beginning of the episode featured a dramatic recap of the last episodes renarrating the events of the last night, from Chariot Requiem's appearance to Giorno seizing the Arrow, to the tune of O Fortuna. The recap was removed in all subsequent re-releases of the episode.
