My Stand Tohth's predictions are always right!

Boingo (ボインゴ) is a recurring tertiary antagonist featured in the third part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Stardust Crusaders. Introduced in the "'Khnum' Oingo and 'Tohth Boingo" story arc, he reappears during the "Hol Horse and Boingo" story arc.

Boingo is a young Stand user who wields the prophesizing comic book Stand, Tohth. As part of the Egypt 9 Glory Gods, he attempts to assassinate the Joestar Group in Egypt alongside his older brother Oingo, and later Hol Horse.

Boingo reappears as a primary ally in the spin off manga Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak and the light novel Crazy Heartbreakers.

Appearance

Boingo is a short child with large eyes, a long mouth, and tall, curly hair. He wears a backwards visor, which leaves several long but thin bangs to hang over his face. His apparel consists of several layers: an unbuttoned coat that extends past his knees with dark short sleeves and an upturned collar, a long-sleeve shirt, baggy pants, dark shorts, and shoes. In the anime, his coat's sleeves are the same color as the torso, and he does not have shorts over his pants.

In the spin-off Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak, which is set in 1999, Boingo has kept his outfit and short height, but is shown to have faint stubble.

Personality

Boingo is a very timid boy

As a young boy, Boingo is very introverted and timid. He prefers to act as support for his companions by showing the predictions of his Tohth rather than directly taking action. He is only comfortable around his brother, Oingo, sticking close to him and feeling lonely while away from him.[3][4] His bond with his brother is deep enough that he promises to take revenge for Oingo's defeat all by himself, which causes Oingo to tear up.[5] He is willing to interact with kind strangers, but he prefers to stay silent.[3] With ruder strangers such as Hol Horse, he takes to hiding and often stutters in his speech.[4][6]

Despite his typical reserved nature, he is absolutely confident in his Stand's predictions, often reassuring that they are "one hundred percent, absolutely correct."[4] He even finds joy in the infallibility of his Stand, letting out a bizarre, loud laugh at the thought of it.[7]

Although seemingly a normal boy, Boingo has a somewhat dark personality. He laughs at the thought of the Joestar group dying[7] and has no qualms with his brother punching someone whose face they found annoying and stealing his wallet.[8] He further shows his violent side when he vows to take revenge and kill Jotaro and his companions by himself.[5]

After Hol Horse's defeat, Boingo has a change of personality and begins to believe that revenge is pointless. He decides to forget about Jotaro and only use his predictions to help people in the future, believing that this will bring true happiness to him and his brother. This optimism, however, is short-lived, as an annoyed Iggy pounces on him, sending him to the hospital and back to his old, shy self.[9]

The information below derives from Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak or its novelization Crazy Heartbreakers which were not written by Araki. As such, it may not be considered canon.

In the spin-off Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak, Boingo seems to have largely remained the same withdrawn man as he was during his childhood. He seems to be friends with Mariah, as she attacks Hol Horse to avenge Boingo for having been used. Boingo himself seems to not like Hol Horse and asks him to never get involved with him again after fulfilling the mission to find a missing parrot.[10] It is also shown that Boingo is still deeply afraid of DIO and even simply remembering him makes his shudder.[11]

History

Stardust Crusaders (1989)

Boingo's first appearance.

Boingo is first seen reading from the comic book Tohth and then meets a friendly comic artist who offers to buy it from him. However, Oingo maintains that the book is not for sale and threatens the comic artist to stay away from Boingo. He then reads the comic and decides to wait four hours for the next bus to avoid the accident Tohth predicted. The brothers then look into Tohth for the next prediction and realize that they are meant to poison the Joestar group's tea. Boingo stays in the shadows and witnesses Oingo's preparations to fulfill the prophecy. At the same time, Jean Pierre Polnareff lets a cigarette fall, which points to their restaurant.

Initially, the group decides to order tea, but a suspicious Joseph Joestar decides to order the unopened coke instead. This seems to prevent Oingo from poisoning the drink at first, but an angry customer reacts to the warm coke he was served, causing the Joestar group to order the tea that Oingo successfully poisons. However, right as the group is about to drink their tea, Iggy eats another customer's cake and causes the Joestar group to abandon their tea to take care of Iggy and leave the shop, which makes Oingo and Boingo angry. Eventually, following Tohth's prophecy, Oingo punches a nerdy-looking stranger and frightens him into dropping his wallet, giving the two money and temporarily pacifying them for their failure.

Boingo's first retire.

Following Tohth's next prediction, Oingo then tries to make Jotaro eat a bomb that looked like an orange. However, Joseph and Polnareff return and Oingo is forced to disguise himself as Jotaro in order to prevent them from attacking him. The disguise backfires and Oingo is dragged into the same car where he placed the bomb. Boingo becomes shocked after finding out the true meaning of Tohth's prophecy, that Oingo is the one who will fall victim to the bomb with Jotaro's face, and mentally begs for his brother to transform back so that their intended interpretation of the prophecy will come true. Regardless, Oingo accidentally steps on the bomb he set up, causing it to blow up and split his face in two. Boingo then arrives and resolves to defeat the Joestar group on his own, causing Oingo to become proud of his younger brother's growth. However, the man Oingo assaulted earlier returns with other thugs, who beat up the two brothers and send them to the hospital. Meanwhile, the real Jotaro returns from visiting the hospital, and, happening to be thirsty, picks out an orange to eat.

Boingo is kidnapped by Hol Horse, who later teams up with Boingo to help avenge Oingo.

After exiting the hospital, Boingo teams up with Hol Horse to avenge his brother (albeit only after Hol Horse had to resort to kidnapping Boingo). Boingo, hiding under a crate for the majority of Hol Horse's assisted assault, demonstrates the extent of Tohth's power by showing its next prediction: that Hol Horse would kick a woman and the woman will be thankful and give him money. Hol Horse is skeptical, but this is proven true when he sees a woman walking past him and, driven by the possibility of the prediction being true, runs and kicks the woman in the back, and finds out he killed a deadly scorpion on the woman's back, and is paid for saving her life.

The two then try to follow the next prediction, involving Hol Horse sticking his fingers up Polnareff's nose and the rest of the Joestar group being hit by a truck. Hol Horse, skeptical of the result, but willing to follow through nonetheless, sticks his fingers up Polnareff's nose. A series of events is then triggered that leads up to the Joestar group being hit by a truck.

Boingo finally retired.

Boingo now has Hol Horse's full confidence and directs Horse to guide his bullets through a series of pipes. However, Hol Horse's watch was off by a few minutes when directed to fire at noon, and the bullets loop around and pierce through the depicted holes in the comic book's pages to hit him instead.

Afterward, Boingo contemplates using his powers to better the lives of others and kicks aside his hiding crate, but the crate accidentally hits Iggy and Boingo becomes assaulted by the dog and becomes even more introverted than before. Tohth then says that, if it was that easy to change their ways, there wouldn't be bad people in the world.

Spin-Offs

Oingo Boingo Brothers Adventure

An employee from Shueisha was on vacation in Egypt when he met Boingo, who gave him the book "The Oingo Boingo Brothers' Great Adventure", half-forcibly photographing it and publishing it just like that. Rohan Kishibe compliments the book, and hears the details about it from the editor Mr. O, gradually changing his opinion on it and remarking that there is no manga artist greater than him.

Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak

Boingo with Mariah
The information below derives from a source not written by Araki. As such, it may or may not be considered canon.

It is shown that after Boingo and Hol Horse were defeated and were brought to the hospital, the both of them woke up the evening DIO fought Jotaro. Assuming that DIO must be preoccupied with fighting the Joestar Group, they took the chance to run away before DIO could kill them next for their failures. Running on the streets of Cairo, Hol Horse and Boingo saw Hierophant Green's Emerald Splash fire at a clock and they witnessed Kakyoin's last moments.[13]

After DIO's defeat, the Speedwagon Foundation informed Boingo and DIO's other agents about all his evil deeds and left them be. Ten years after the events of Stardust Crusaders, Boingo still remains with Oingo. He hasn't grown much taller since then, but now has a stubble on his chin. By March 1999, Oingo and Boingo have been freeloading at Mariah and Kenny G.'s house. Boingo's Tohth predicts that he'll have to cooperate with Hol Horse again to find a parrot, though he still detests the cowboy.

Boingo meets Hol Horse at a hideout and though he's reluctantly resigned himself to Tohth's prediction, Boingo asks Hol Horse to never get involved with him afterwards, though Hol Horse is mostly confused. Boingo and Hol Horse consult Tohth to divine their path and they see that they have to go to Morioh, Japan. Once they arrive, Boingo drops Tohth and ends up getting lost searching for it. Ryoko Kakyoin finds his comic book laying on the ground.[10]

Boingo hiding in the police station

Boingo later goes to Budogaoka Police Station. As he hides under a desk, Ryohei Higashikata tries reaching out to him. Ryohei asks how he got lost and Boingo mumbles in response, though Ryohei manages to understand him. Ryohei learns about what happened to Boingo so far as soon as he arrived in Japan. Boingo thinks back to the last pages he read in Tohth. His Stand thanked him for reading and being the comic's number one fan, but as fate foretold, he must part ways with the book for some time. Tohth also mentioned that Boingo has to throw away the book himself after gaining the confidence to graduate from being DIO's underling. Boingo says that although he definitely didn't throw it away himself, the book's predictions can't change. He also tells Ryohei that the book isn't really his and he's just looking after it. Ryohei asks his co-worker, Karaiya, to get Boingo back to his hotel safely in case Hol Horse is looking for him there.[14]

Once at the hotel, Boingo ponders on his situation, reminiscing his childhood and how Tohth has been with him as long as he can remember. Even if his father sold it for drinking money, the book would reappear by his side. Although DIO and Enya thought of it as his Stand ability, Boingo actually thinks that there is a "Tohth" in this world who chose him to watch over this book. Boingo expects the book to return to him, but he's still incredibly nervous. Even after Tohth told him that he "graduated from being DIO's underling", Boingo is still afraid of the vampire. He wonders if the book tried to free him from DIO's curse and if the current user won't be involved with the end of the prophecy. Boingo wants to get out to get Tohth back, but he finds himself unable to open the door.[11] Meanwhile, Josuke and Hol Horse manage to stop a man named Koji Kiyohara who seemingly has used Pet Sounds to cause various rampages across town.

Later, Hol Horse and Boingo meet with Ryohei and Josuke. Ryohei tells Hol Horse and Boingo about what happened to Koji Kiyohara after he was taken to custody. They investigated Kiyohara's home and found videos of him shooting animals to death, so they are planning to do a psychological evaluation on him. Furthermore, some victims still haven't regained consciousness from the incident, possibly due to shock. Hol Horse thanks Ryohei for the information and figures they should go look for Boingo's comic book next. He tells Boingo to stay in his hotel room until everything is resolved. After they leave, Ryohei suggests that Boingo should try looking for the book on his own, since it's something he treasures. Boingo appreciates his advice. Josuke is curious as to why Boingo is so desperate to get his manga back instead of just buying another one. He looks at a drawing of the book and suddenly realizes where he might have seen it before. Josuke tells Hol Horse that he'll meet up with him at the hotel later and leaves on his own.[15]

However, Boingo soon meets Kazuki Karaiya, a policeman who's also the true mastermind behind the chaos caused by Pet Sounds. Karaiya knocks out Boingo and takes him with him. Later, Karaiya also finds Tohth on the street, left behind by Ryoko Kakyoin.[16] Karaiya also captures Ryoko and puts her clothes on Boingo to use the latter as bait, putting him inside of a tower for Josuke to find. Josuke uses his Stand to tie a rope around him and grabs him into his arms and only then discovers the trick.

Pet Sounds activates its Stand and puts Josuke and Boingo under its control. Suddenly, they appear to be in Egypt. Josuke is surprised because he thought his first overseas trip would be somewhere like Guam or Hawaii. He also points out that the parrot's ability to replay its experiences keeps getting more realistic and might be stronger because Pet Sounds is closer to them than before. Josuke continues hearing DIO's voice and is creeped out. When Josuke and Boingo turn around, they see DIO with Pet Sounds on his shoulder. Pet Sounds is replaying the memory of when its original owner was murdered; DIO commanded Pet Shop to kill his owner for trying to run away. Just like the memory, Pet Shop fires ice spikes at Josuke and Boingo.[13] Despite being illusions, they can still feel the pain. Josuke checks where Boingo was hit by the icicle and regrets that his Stand cannot heal injuries that aren't real. Suddenly, Josuke and Boingo are soaked in gasoline. Boingo wonders if this is the power of The World since their situation suddenly changed. Pet Shop flies behind them and drops a lit match. As soon as it hits the ground, Josuke and Boingo are covered in flames. Pet Shop then fires a barrage of icicles to put out some of the fire, saving them. Boingo wonders why he helped them but Josuke understands that the bird is just playing with its prey. It's cold enough for their bodies and the gasoline to freeze but as soon as the ice thaws, they would be burned to death. There's also no way for them to escape since a circle of fire surrounds them. Boingo wonders if the prediction he saw from Tohth about graduating from being DIO's underling meant that he would die here. He starts crying and blames himself for getting Josuke involved, but Josuke cheers him up and comes up with a plan. He ignores the attack and lets the fire burn them, while Boingo worries that they're going to die. Although it seems as if their bodies were burned, Boingo suddenly wakes up coughing on the ground. Josuke reveals that he used his Stand to make Boingo's rope wrap around both of their necks just before they were killed in the illusion. The lack of blood flow to their brains shocked them back into reality, canceling the illusion's effects.[17]

Boingo and Joseph briefly meet up with Hol Horse, but he is left behind when Hol Horse and Josuke pursue Pet Sounds and Ryoko respectively. Eventually, the two problems are solved, and the heroes gather.[18]

Later, Boingo peeks into the police station, wanting to thank Ryohei for his help earlier. However, Ryohei shows up behind him, and is happy that Boingo got his book back. Ryohei worries whether Josuke caused any trouble for Boingo with his rowdiness, but Boingo believes that's one of Josuke's good traits. Ryohei is relieved to hear that, and Boingo hopes everyone else will understand Josuke someday too. He drops his book mid-speech, revealing new pages. Tohth tells Boingo that wanting to thank Ryohei is proof that he has grown a lot. However, this is the only chance he would have gotten to do so since Ryohei is about to die soon, after drinking a bottle of rum. Boingo is shocked upon reading it, so Ryohei picks up the book for him. Ryohei says he doesn't really understand what it said, but he could tell it was about him. Boingo's expression causes him to believe that it isn't just a bad joke. Hol Horse finds Boingo at the station and also thanks Ryohei, before dragging Boingo away so they could go help Oingo deal with his debt collectors back in Egypt.[19]

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (PS1)

With the addition of Super Story Mode, Boingo or Voing in the English localization, appears alongside his older brother Oingo as a Mini Game. His fight is simply a "quick time event" mini-game, where the player must perform the correct moves to follow Tohth's prediction. Though unfortunately for Oingo, following the predictions means his own defeat after the orange-bomb-contraption-thing explodes in his own face.

Boingo is also part of Book Mode, standing alongside Oingo on the first page.
