"STONE OCEAN" is the first opening theme song of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean and the tenth overall opening theme of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation as a whole. The song is performed by ichigo from Kisida Kyodan & The Akebosi Rockets, with lyrics by Shoko Fujibayashi, composition by Takahiro Kawata, and arrangement by Masaki Iehara. The opening animation sequence was produced by Kamikaze Douga.

Opening Animation

The opening starts on a tracking shot of a white line on a road until the camera tilts upward to reveal that it is a thread coming out of the back of an armored van. The view then quickly enters the van, following the thread and shows Jolyne Cujoh and Ermes Costello sitting inside with a number of anonymous prisoners and guards. The view then quickly exits the van through the windshield and elevates itself to show a bird's-eye view of Green Dolphin Street Prison as the series title appears.

To depict characters being stuck in prison and mimic drone shooting scenes, still images with a moving camera are used.[3] The thread reappears as several screens flash in quick succession to transition into a view of Jolyne's cell, in which she is seen arguing with her cellmate as the camera rotates around her. After another quick transition, Jolyne can be seen in the middle of a hallway while being shrunken and with several guards shooting at her from behind a barred gate. The camera flies under the opposite gate, with the Stone Pendant being briefly seen before the screen is filled with sprites and motifs reminiscent of traditional comic book art.

A shrunken Jolyne running
The camera zooms through the sprites and then moves through a second hallway filled with various guards and inmates of Green Dolphin Street who morph from featureless silhouettes to fully visible and animated characters. As the camera reaches the end of the hallway, F.F. and Ermes appear and take a pose alongside Jolyne. The background also morphs to transport the trio inside of the ghost music room, showing Weather Report, Narciso Anasui and Emporio Alnino besides the three women.
Part 6's Joestar Group
A quick wipe happens, and the scene advances forward across a piano, showing a number of objects from previous parts falling on its keys. The camera then enters a drain, transitioning into a scene of F.F. playing catch with Ermes and Jolyne in the prison courtyard as bank notes, basketballs and baseballs rain down from the sky. The scene suddenly zooms into the window of a building, transitioning into the meeting room where Jolyne and Jotaro Kujo stand in the middle of a rainstorm as Manhattan Transfer hovers above them. The camera flies across the room, rotating a full 180 degrees before showing a brief shot of the star on the back of Jotaro's coat.

The background fades to black, leaving only the star on the screen, then the camera quickly flies backwards through a grate that Jotaro and Jolyne peer at. The opening then transitions into a view of the Stone Pendant tied to a DISC and then a fist closes over it. Jolyne is seen kneeling in the water with a night sky filled with stars, clutching her fists until she breaks free from her handcuffs, with a determined expression in her eyes. Jolyne then stands up and summons Stone Free.

Jolyne & F.F. playing catch

After a quick wipe made with butterflies, the view shifts to the main trio showing off their abilities throughout abstract backgrounds. Ermes puts a sticker on a giant bullet, duplicating it as she runs on it and jumps from one bullet to the other. F.F. then jumps into view accompanied by several planktons before quickly aiming and shooting with her finger. Finally, Jolyne swings by before striking a pose. The trio can then be seen running forward on bridges made of strings, and the scene shifts to a view of Weather Report and Jolyne fighting an unknown foe shooting at them in a large room. Next, Jolyne runs on the water as dozens of planktons jump out of the water. The plankton turn into DISCs, allowing a transition into a hangar full of DISCs.

Jolyne & Jotaro

The opening then transitions back to the night sky scene. Visions of the key items of the series related to stones[3] flash in quick succession. In front of them, the white thread forms a star, transitioning into the Star Birthmark on Jolyne's shoulder. As the camera rotates, Jolyne marches forward while her father can be seen from the back, standing in the background. Jolyne reaches a wall of bars and melancholically looks at the sky but her sad look turns into a determined expression. The opening ends with another bird's eye view of the prison as a bright blue butterfly ascends into the sky.

Altered Version

The opening for SO Episode 12 follows the trend set by the previous openings of containing a few sound effects.

Second Version

Jolyne with Jotaro in the 2nd version

Episodes 13-24 have a second version of the opening with several modified details.

Firstly, the thread that appear throughout the opening is now vibrating to the beat of the soundtrack. The credit text is styled in a string-themed font similar to the one used for sounds being transported along Stone Free's string.

The ending scene displays Jolyne with her normal color scheme rather than with pink hair. Instead of Jolyne walking toward a wall of bars, she turns around to face Jotaro and hugs her father.

The opening's end with the bird's eye view of the prison is changed, the butterfly being replaced by Savage Garden flying away while a group of blue dart frogs fall from the sky.

Altered version

The opening for SO Episode 24 also contains sound effects, and the credit text moves along the background rather than being static on screen.

Official English Version

There's no time to be naive
The days of lies are over and done
Tug on all the strings of faith
Oh wait and see, the game has just begun

Even if I'm surrounded by
Trap & hate I'll dodge 'em all
O.K (O.K) All right (All right)
No one can stop my survival days

Get away from (STONE OCEAN)

As long as I am being real to myself...
(Got to be tough)

Break out! (Hey) I'm wide awake (Ho)
Not gonna turn back to whom I was before
Break out! (Hey) Won't escape (Ho)
Light up the skills I'll be stronger even more
Limits are bye-bye, my heart's on standby
Until the fate is on my side
I Don't stop beatin' Don't stop beatin'
Don't stop beating 'em up

If they want to drag me in
In a mixed up world full of bad jokes
I'm the only savior
Oh wait and see the game has just begun

Even G-O-D had made
Plan and scenario are
O.K (O.K) All right (All right)
I'll crash and smash and build it up again

Get away from (STONE OCEAN)
I don't wanna say (“There's no chance”)
Let's get started, Count (1-2-3)
Take me faraway, (Fly! Stone Free)

You could never find the word “SURRENDER” in my book
(ain't nobody stop)

Break out! (Hey) Let's go wild (Ho)
Not gonna look down, aim for hope and faith
Break out! (Hey) Won't escape (Ho)

List of References

The opening animation incorporates a number of hidden nods to the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series as a whole.

  • The artwork used on the cover is based on Jolyne's pose from the title page of SO Chapter 72.
  • The entire opening is littered with images of butterflies and stars, in reference to Jolyne's emblem, the Joestar Family and their birthmarks.
  • In the armored van, there is zipper graffiti under the bench next to Ermes. The name of Araki's company, Lucky Land and its hand emblem can also be seen to the left of zipper.
  • During the flashing screens after the title card appears, rows of featureless prisoners can be seen. The prison number MA-152403 seen on them belongs to Weather Report. "MA-28" can also be seen on their wrists, which refers to Narciso Anasui's prisoner number, MA-28050.
  • In a hallway full of silhouettes, graffiti of words mimicking those found on the cover of SO Volume 7 can be seen.
  • At the end of the hallway, Jolyne, Ermes and F.F. strike poses in reference to the cover of SO Volume 4.
  • In the room featuring the Part 6 group, a piano can be seen with objects falling on the keys. These include:
  • On the wall past the piano, the emblems on Josuke Higashikata's uniform can be seen.
  • In the prison courtyard, just before entering the next scene, graffiti for the word "catwalk" can be seen on the wall of the building, likely referencing "Catwalk", the SOUL'd OUT single that Araki drew the cover art for.
  • In the meeting room with Jotaro and Jolyne, there are various images on the walls. These include:
    • a poster of a Boston Terrier, referencing the character Iggy.
    • graffiti of the word "Cherry", likely a reference to Noriaki Kakyoin's favorite fruit.
    • The word "Crazy" and a picture of a diamond, in reference to the stand, Crazy Diamond.
    • Circles with J's in them, matching the appearance of Joseph's clackers.
  • Jotaro and Jolyne's outfits in this room match their color palettes on the cover of Issue #8, 2001 of Weekly Shonen Jump.
  • When the Star Platinum's STAND DISC is shown, it's possible to see bubbles with the letters "G-T-C-Δ" on them. This is a reference to the "GΔCT" we see written all over Whitesnake and C-MOON.
  • After breaking her handcuffs, Jolyne strikes a pose with her Stand resembling one done by Jotaro in STAND PROUD. Stone Free's pose here is also lifted from the cover of Issue #8, 2001 of Weekly Shonen Jump.
  • A brief shot before the chorus shows Jolyne, Ermes and F.F. posing like on the cover of SO Chapter 54.
  • During the chorus, Ermes duplicates bullets, a feat she accomplishes in the "Made in Heaven" story arc.
  • F.F.'s shooting stance is taken from the "Marylin Manson, the Debt Collector" story arc.
  • Much like the cover to the single, Jolyne strikes a pose mimicking the one on the title page of SO Chapter 72.
  • The rope bridges that the trio walks on are taken from a feat Jolyne accomplished in the "There's Six of Us!" story arc.
  • During the scene showcasing the fight between Jolyne, Weather Report and Lang Rangler, the wall displays graffiti of the words, "Love & Fight" which is taken from the words on Jolyne's chest on the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump 2002, Issue #8. Similarly, the moon from SO Volume 17 can also be seen.
  • In the hangar, a "1868 England" graffiti can be seen, referencing the carriage accident that started the series. A "Yes! Yes! Yes!" and "No! No! No!" graffiti can also be seen, referencing Atum. Near the ceiling, a picture of Aerosmith can be seen.
  • During the shot of the string forming a star, the background flashes pictures referencing each of the parts leading up to Part 6, showing stone-related objects. These include:
  • Jolyne standing with her father behind her facing the other way is a possible throwback to a similar shot between Jotaro and DIO in JoJo: The Memories of That Blood ~end of THE WORLD~.

Trivia

Original (left) and TV version (right).
  • When the opening first aired on TV, minor changes were made to Emporio's design. These changes were later added for streaming services.
