Sports Maxx (スポーツ・マックス, Supōtsu Makkusu) is a secondary antagonist featured in the sixth part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Stone Ocean, specifically the "Kiss of Love and Revenge" story arc.

Sports Maxx is an inmate at Green Dolphin Street Prison and a gangster, as well as a Stand user wielding Limp Bizkit. He becomes an accomplice to Whitesnake to fulfill the latter's plan, and is also Ermes Costello's arch-enemy, as he was responsible for her sister Gloria's murder.

Appearance

Sports Maxx is a man of average to above-average height and medium build.

He has short, sparse hair in soft spikes. Curiously, Maxx seems to have two sets of eyebrows: normal looking dark ones, as well as ones in the shape of large, light circles, tapering into short tails. After transforming into a Zombie, his skin becomes paler and his features become more gaunt.

He wears a long, light coat with "GD St. JAIL" written on the back, a turtleneck shirt underneath it, and light pants, both the coat and pants being patterned by a dark paisley design.

Personality

Sports Maxx preys on Ermes

Sports Maxx has displayed the behavior of a violent gang member prior to entering Green Dolphin Street Prison. When Foo Fighters mentions Ermes's story, she says that Sports Maxx killed someone by making the victim put a wooden stick in their mouth before violently stomping on them.[3] He then had Gloria Costello killed for denouncing him to the police.[4] Maxx has no guilt at all for what he did, blaming Gloria for sticking her nose in his "business" instead of admitting any wrong.[5]

When he's turned into a revenant, Sports Maxx's violence only worsens as he begins to crave brains to eat,[6] feeling it as an unknown thirst at first.[7] During his fight against Ermes, he's abnormally violent and does things typical of a zombie like trying to bite into Ermes's skull. Due to a mix of anger and his inherent brutality, Maxx also threatens to suck Ermes's brains out and fill her head with feces just to spite her.[8]

Sports Maxx maintains a respectable façade. He still takes drugs[9] and goes to the prison's prostitutes for pleasure[10] but also performs other, more respectable activities even if they're often related to death. His hobby seems to be taxidermy and he stuffs animals like birds or alligators,[10] but he also cleans the graveyard and gives flowers to some of the graves.[11] He also visits the chapel regularly, but it is revealed that it is because he cooperates with Whitesnake, with whom he acts more subservient and reasonable,[12] though this is likely out of fear of the Stand's ability to take away his own.

Sports Maxx has some tactical acumen. During his fight against Ermes, he was able to predict how she would use her stickers to lure him and exploited his undead nature to detach his head and attack in an unexpected way.[5]

Abilities

Stand

Main article: Limp Bizkit

Maxx, given to him via Stand DISC, originally could only allow him to reanimate the corpses of people and animals around him into invisible, undead versions of themselves. However, after dying himself, his Stand preserved his body and spirit by allowing himself to exist as an undead zombie as well. This allowed Maxx to dismember his body without pain or injury while also giving him superhuman strength.

History

Background

Maxx overseeing the murder of Gloria

Sports Maxx is a car dealer by profession but is in fact a vicious member of the mafia, having committed over forty counts of various crimes. He is first shown curb stomping a man to death outside Gloria Costello's restaurant, only to have been witnessed committing the act by Ermes fleeing the scene. Instead of pursuing Ermes, his attention would shift to her sister who put herself in danger calling the police on Maxx to protect Ermes. In retaliation, he proceeded to have Gloria strangled to death before dumping her body into a gutter, escaping the police who needed a testimony.

Ermes Costello discovered Maxx's involvement and sought revenge for her sister's murder. Shortly after, Maxx is arrested but is only found guilty of tax evasion and extortion, for which he is sentenced five years at Green Dolphin Street Prison.

During the four years prior to Jolyne’s incarceration, Maxx accustomed himself to life in prison and builds his own schedule; maintaining the old prison cemetery and taking up taxidermy as a hobby. At some point, he acquainted himself with the priest Enrico Pucci, who notices his potential for evil and thus reaches out to him with his Stand Whitesnake; giving the Stand Limp Bizkit to Maxx in exchange for aiding in his plans.

Stone Ocean (2011-2012)

One year before his current sentence was to conclude, Maxx is summoned to meet with Whitesnake at the chapel; unaware of himself being pursued by a vengeance-seeking Ermes Costello on his trail. Ermes would forgo her preemptive attack upon Pucci's arrival and flees, to which Maxx greets the priest and asks for a rose that he particularly likes from the nearby bouquet. Pucci obliges as Maxx infests the rose with maggots using his Stand ability.

Meeting with Whitesnake, Maxx was asked to revive a human bone with his Stand powers, much to the latter's confusion as to use his Stand with only a single bone. He ultimately obliges under the threat of Whitesnake taking back his given ability, activating its power on the bone. The bone suddenly tears through Whitesnake's (and by proxy Pucci's) hand and vanishes, to which the former briefly chokes Maxx demanding to know what he did to it much to his bewilderment. Being unable to control the bone with his ability, Maxx can sense it moving around near the Ultra Security House Unit. Whitesnake, intrigued by this development, told Maxx to let the bone wander freely so he could observe its movements.

Kiss of Love and Revenge

Ermes assassinates Maxx

Later during the same day, Maxx sees a photo of Gloria Costello on his way to the workshop. Intrigued, he takes it and it doing so activates Ermes Costello's trap. When he takes the photo, Maxx peels off a sticker and makes the pipe and its hidden duplicate merge together, trapping Maxx. To seal the deal, Ermes creates another duplicate to cover the hole left by the merging and turns the pipe into a coffin for Maxx. Maxx then activates his Limp Bizkit. An alligator's Zombie breaks the pipe and allows "him" to escape through a hole. Leaving the workshop, Maxx doesn't remember what has happened.

Confused, Maxx barely remembers his mission and decides to let off some steam with a prostitute. However, the people around him act strange and ignore him. In the cemetery, Maxx searches an inmate who was knocked out during the confusion and finds his drug syringe but when he injects it, his body oozes with sewage. Maxx thus realizes his death and understands that his current craving is a thirst for brains, to which he instinctly devours the prostitute and covers himself in blood. He swears revenge on Gloria Costello's sister.

Ermes beats Maxx

When Jolyne, Ermes and F.F. arrive, Sports Maxx had planned a trap by reanimating an entire mob of invisible zombies in the cemetery. With the zombie of the prostitute he killed earlier as a decoy, Maxx manages to take out Jolyne and focuses his attention on Ermes. He sics the zombies on Ermes so that they devour her and he can bite off her head from behind. However, Ermes splits her head with the stickers, protecting the original, and attacks. Maxx reveals that he's detached his head to throw off Ermes and overwhelms her thanks to his invisibility. Despite being unheard given his undead state, Maxx gloats to Ermes over Gloria being at fault for sticking herself into his business and leading him to his current predicament. Being unsatisfied even as he threatens to eat Ermes's brains and replace it with her guts, Maxx peels the sticker on her head before leaping to deal the finishing blow. However, as Ermes's head rejoins itself, the piece that Maxx previously bit off burst out of his body and flies out, giving away his current position. This allows Ermes to violently beat him up with Kiss and knock him back. Maxx tries to hide in the crowd of zombies again, but Ermes has already placed another sticker on his head, allowing her to pull him back within range to finish him off. The gangster is violently pummeled in the air before his head fully collides with its duplicate, causing his Stand and memory DISCs to eject. Without Limp Bizkit to preserve his zombified state, Maxx fades away and ceases to exist along with his invisible zombies.

Under World

Maxx later returns briefly in the form of a memory through use of Under World to further explain the nature of it to Ermes.

Eyes of Heaven (PS3/PS4)

Sports Maxx appears as a stage gimmick in the stage Green Dolphin Street Prison. He uses Limp Bizkit to release an invisible alligator that attacks anyone in its way. The alligator has its own health bar, and can be fought and defeated.
