This bird is a Stand User just like me! It kills everyone who gets close to this manor... and it'll come after me next! I'm next on it's list!
—Iggy regarding Pet Shop, Chapter 222: The Gatekeeper of Hell, Pet Shop, Part 1

Pet Shop (ペット・ショップ, Petto Shoppu) is a secondary antagonist featured in the third part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Stardust Crusaders, specifically the "The Gatekeeper of Hell, Pet Shop" story arc. Pet Shop also appears as a posthumous tertiary antagonist in the spin-off manga Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak.

This vicious falcon is a member of the Egypt 9 Glory Gods, the guardian of DIO's Mansion, and is a Stand user wielding the ice Stand, Horus. When Iggy inadvertently stumbles upon DIO's Mansion, Pet Shop attacks him.

Appearance

Pet Shop is classified as a falcon, sporting a strong bill, sharp talons, and excellent eyesight.[3] He wears an ornate falconry hood adorned with 3 feathers and a heart motif like the other inhabitants of DIO's Mansion. He also wears a scarf around his neck.

Personality

Pet Shop will kill anyone trespassing on DIO's Mansion

A ruthless sentry who is loyal to his post, Pet Shop almost always bears a menacing glare and does not discriminate against any who trespasses DIO's mansion. He intended to kill a small boy and would have if it wasn't for Iggy's interference, and showed no remorse in eating the eyes of two dogs he decapitated in front of their owner. He is extremely relentless in hunting down his prey, as shown by his pursuit of Iggy, no matter how risky the path to his prey might be and is highly intelligent, having identified the beggar employed by Avdol as a spy and tearing up the photograph of the mansion after killing him to destroy his work.

Abilities

Stand

Main article: Horus

Pet Shop's Stand Horus gives him the capacity to generate and manipulate ice, which he primarily uses to create ice spikes and propel them as makeshift missiles.

Bird Constitution

As a bird, Pet Shop possesses the natural ability to fly, which he does with extreme proficiency. For instance, Pet Shop is able to fly under a moving car. Moreover, because he possesses specialized air sacks to store air, he can breathe underwater and swim longer than even a dog. His eyesight is extremely sharp, which combined with his high-speed flying ability allows him to track targets which try to flee as Iggy did.

History

Background

The information below derives from Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak or its novelization Crazy Heartbreakers which were not written by Araki. As such, it may not be considered canon.

In Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak, it is explained that Pet Shop was raised and trained by a bird trainer, who trained the falcon alongside a parrot. After attempting to escape from DIO's grasp, he was murdered.

Concludes non-canon section.

Stardust Crusaders (1989)

Pet Shop confronts Iggy

Pet Shop serves as the guardian of DIO's mansion in Egypt and is part of the Egypt 9 Glory Gods. He ruthlessly kills any who may trespass or he deems as suspicious. When he first appears, Pet Shop decapitates two large dogs with ease and crushes a beggar (employed by Avdol to find DIO's mansion) and his car with his Stand. Iggy witnesses this, but doesn't want to be involved, so he plays dumb. Pet Shop, with some suspicion, leaves him alone. He then returns to his post at the gate of DIO's Mansion and finds the young owner of the two dogs he killed climbing under it. He is about to attack and kill the boy when Iggy saves him, revealing himself as a Stand user.

Pet Shop freezes the ground, temporarily immobilizing Iggy who is caught by surprise and shoots icicles at the dog. Iggy protects himself with The Fool and flees back to the streets. However, Pet Shop's keen eyes allow him to see Iggy and start bombarding the dog. Iggy is forced to hide in the sewers but Pet Shop follows him again and hits the dog. However, the real Iggy reveals himself: what Pet Shop had killed was merely a sand statue. The Fool leaps out and slashes Pet Shop in the breast.

Iggy wants to call off the fight, but Pet Shop's pride is hurt. The bird decides to summon the full power of his Horus and begins to freeze the whole sewer. Iggy flees but the ice catches his foreleg, immobilizing him a second time. As Pet Shop shoots his icicles, Iggy is forced to cut off his leg and flee underwater. Iggy eventually hides at the bottom of the Nile under a dome made of sand. However, Pet Shop still pursues the dog underwater. It spots the dome and shoots an icicle to confirm that it is here, resuming the bombardment. Iggy creates arms of sand and throws some icicles back at Pet Shop, wounding a wing and forcing the bird to retreat temporarily.

Pet Shop's death

Pet Shop thus enacts a methodical and ruthless plan. It encases the sand dome in ice and tries to crush it, forcing Iggy to dig underneath it. However, Pet Shop has also dug underground and positions itself so that they tunnels meet and Pet Shop is positioned perfectly to shoot Iggy, who in a do-or-die stratagem, willingly lets the dome behind him collapse. The air pressure resulting from the collapse pushes Iggy toward Pet Shop fast enough for the dog to bite down Pet Shop's beak as it was creating an icicle inside of it, making his head explode.

Video Games

JoJo RPG (SFC)

Pet Shop appears as one of the final enemies, though the player's whole party must fight him, unlike in the manga where only Iggy ever encounters him.

Heritage for the Future (PS1/DC/Arcade)

PetShopHeritage.gif

Pet Shop appears as a playable character and was only available in the second version of the game.

All of Pet Shop's moves are based on his ability to create ice, such as throwing Ice Stakes, trapping the enemy on the ground with ice or anything related to icicle attacks. His first special move shoots several ice stakes with great speed as a projectile attack. His second special move creates a giant ice block that comes from above the screen (the same move he used to kill the agent in front of DIO's mansion). His last special move sends Pet Shop to the back of the screen from where he shoots even more ice stakes at the opponent. This, however, only works as a grab special move.

Pet Shop is widely considered the most powerful character in the game, with incredibly strong special control from his many projectiles and unblockable setups stemming from his overhanging icicle attack. Playing Pet Shop is generally considered "poor taste" and he's typically soft-banned in most Tournament settings.

If hit by Alessi's Stand attack, Pet Shop turns into an egg but still can use his Stand to make small icicles, possibly implying that Pet Shop was born with his Stand ability.

His ending on Arcade Mode portrays a hypothetical situation in which Pet Shop manages to kill all the main heroes. Pet Shop continues to act as the guardian of DIO's Mansion, as the text says "And Pet Shop never allowed anyone to come near the Mansion, anyone...".

Eyes of Heaven (PS3/PS4)

Petshop jojoeoh.png

Pet Shop was confirmed for the game alongside Lisa Lisa. So far, he is also the only playable character in the game who does not possess a voice actor, receiving his voice from various hawk sound effects instead, and relying on the narrator for spoken portions, similar to Baoh in All-Star Battle.

Pet Shop has a special form of movement: flight. While flying, he has higher-than-average movement speed and can ascend. Pet Shop can "sidestep" and dash as well, and has access to all his skills. His Normal and Powerful Attacks will send projectile ice shards at opponents with some homing capability, and the Powerful Attack can be charged to increase the number of shards fired at once, up to six. However, his stamina will slowly deplete, and the depletion rate increases when actively ascending. When his stamina empties, or he idly hovers close to the ground, Pet Shop will land.

Pet Shop is much more vulnerable when grounded; He cannot move, loses access to most skills, and what Normal Attack he has takes the form of meek ice crystals forming around him to hurt opponents in close range. However, he is also now capable of guarding. Of note is that Pet Shop's stamina regeneration is slower than average, granting opponents a larger opening of attack before he can take flight again.

As a Stand User, Pet Shop is one of many characters with wildly varied abilities that grant him uniqueness in battle.

  • Style Action - Caaaaw: Pet Shop fires a large and unblockable ice missile. Any opponent hit will be paralyzed and left crumpling, open to further attack. The initiating button can be held to increase the size and damage of the missile until it becomes massive (visually similar to the ice chunk he killed the wealthy informant beggar with), capable of dealing incredible damage. If the missile hits the ground or a wall, it will leave behind a mass of ice as a trap that will damage opponents who come in contact with it. The larger the missile, the larger the mass of ice and the longer that it will linger. The opening after the attack is unleashed can be canceled with a sidestep or another skill. The Style Action can still be used while Pet Shop is grounded.
  • C-CAAAAW: Pet Shop fires six icicles with strong homing capabilities. If the icicles hit the ground or a wall, they will leave behind clumps of ice as traps that will damage opponents who come in contact with it.
  • GUGAGAGA: Pet Shop forms ice over his body to close up any wounds. While active, he gains health regeneration. However, his movement and ascent speed are reduced, while his descent speed and stamina depletion are increased. This skill can be performed while grounded.
  • C-Caw: Pet Shop swoops into the air, performing a loop. He is invincible until he begins looping back around. This skill can be performed while grounded, and doing so will instantly transition him into flight.
  • EX - C-Caw: The invincibility period lasts longer, and Pet Shop can also hit and send flying opponents that are too close when the skill is performed.
  • EX - C-CAAAAW: The icicles' homing capabilities are enhanced, and the opening after the skill is performed is shortened.
  • Dual Heat Attack - SKRAAAAAW: Pet Shop swoops upward as Horus is summoned to trap the opponent in a large block of ice by bombarding them with icicles. Pet Shop then finishes by firing an ice shard out of his mouth to blast the opponent, shattering the ice in the process.
JoJolities
  • Gatekeeper of Hell: Pet Shop must connect his Style Action 3 times. (200 Points)
  • (GRIN): Pet Shop must damage an opponent with the ice clumps left behind by the skill "C-CAAAAW". (200 Points)
  • Even when moving at 300 km/hr, his eyes are always locked on his prey's vitals!: Pet Shop must deal 50 hits without losing any health. (300 Points)
  • Gyaaash!: Pet Shop must deal a total of 100 hits. (500 Points)
  • Squawk, squawk (GRIN): Pet Shop must win the battle without losing a single health gauge. (800 Points)

In the English localization, there exists multiple naming inconsistencies regarding Pet Shop's skills. His "C-CAAAAW" skill has also been named "Caaaaaaw!" under its EX variation and the JoJolities list, and his "C-Caw" skill has also been named "Caw Caw" under its EX variation.

Along with the other characters from Parts 1 through 3, Pet Shop's main color scheme is based on his anime appearance.

Tournament

He is paired with Kars in the Eyes of Heaven Tournament. In the preliminaries, they defeat Pannacotta Fugo and Noriaki Kakyoin in the first round, and Dio Brando and Joseph Joestar in the second. In the semifinals, they defeated Jotaro Kujo and Kakyoin in the first round, and Jotaro and DIO in the second. Ultimately, the team wins the Tournament, defeating Jolyne and Gyro Zeppeli in the final round.

All-Star Battle R

Pet Shop was confirmed as a playable character alongside Robert E.O. Speedwagon, Mariah, and Diego Brando during the Street Date trailer.

Command List

This section requires expansion.

Style/Specials/Etc
Flight Mode / Cancel Flight Mode
ASBS.png ON GROUND IN AIR OK

Upon a press of the Style button, Pet Shop can enter and exit Flight Mode. While in Flight Mode, he gains complete maneuverability in mid-air, indicated by a blue aura around him. As all of Pet Shop's skills can be used in mid-air, he can take full advantage of flight to attack from anywhere while remaining outside of many opponents' effective range.

However, Pet Shop loses the ability to guard, throw, or taunt while Flight Mode is active, in addition to most of his movement-based command abilities. Pet Shop will also be forced out of Flight Mode early upon taking damage or landing his HHA or GHA.

Flight Gauge
Passive

Exclusive to Pet Shop is a gauge that allows him to utilize Flight Mode, and drains while said Mode is active; Pet Shop will automatically drop to the ground once the gauge empties.

The Flight Gauge only refills slowly while Pet Shop is crouched, or 'landed', requiring him to remain stationary for a period of time in order to regain any significant amount.

Aerial Chain Beat

While in mid-air, Pet Shop can chain his aerial normal attacks together in order of increasing power, much like any other character could on the ground.

Gliding Attack
(During vertical/forward jump) ASBDPad3.png + ASBL.png IN AIR OK

After a standard straight-upwards or forward jump, Pet Shop halts his momentum and quickly glides at a downwards angle while performing his Light normal attack, potentially covering a larger forward distance. A command normal that can chain into Pet Shop's other normal attacks and skills upon landing.

Slam
ASBDPad1.png/ASBDPad2.png/ASBDPad3.png then ASBDPad7.png/ASBDPad8.png/ASBDPad9.png ON GROUND

A 'Super Jump' skill. From the ground, Pet Shop bounds higher into the air than a standard jump with a forceful beat of his wings. This skill can be used to better evade attacks, extend time for air-based skills, or quickly cancel normal attacks for both offensive and defensive purposes.

Whoosh!

After a jump, Pet Shop momentarily halts his fall, remaining stationary in mid-air for up to a few seconds.

After a jump, Pet Shop halts his aerial movement and rapidly descend towards the ground.

Aerial Dash

Pet Shop passively conjures six ice shards that hover in formation behind him. Upon release of the attack button, he fires the projectiles off with strong homing capabilities. As long as the inputted button is held down, the ice shards will remain hovering behind Pet Shop indefinitely; He is still allowed free movement and attacking using the other buttons and inputs, including executing other skills. (Comboable)

Caw caw!
ASBDPad6.pngASBDPad2.pngASBDPad3.png + ASBL.png/ASBM.png/ASBH.png ON GROUND IN AIR OK

Pet Shop quickly dives straight forward before suddenly swooping upwards in a loop, sending the opponent flying upon impact and into a soft knockdown. This attack deals moderate Guard damage, and pushes the opponent back a fair distance if guarded. The attack button inputted determines how far he travels before delivering the attack; If Light (ASBL.png) is inputted, Pet Shop immediately swoops upwards without flying forward, and the attack functions as a reversal and anti-air. (Flash Cancel comboable)

Screech!
ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad3.pngASBDPad6.png + ASBL.png/ASBM.png/ASBH.png ON GROUND IN AIR OK

Pet Shop conjures large ice spikes that jut out from the ground upwards in a low attack that cannot be blocked standing. The number of ice spikes created is determined by the attack button inputted; Medium (ASBM.png) and Heavy (ASBH.png) create two and three spikes respectively, with the multiple spikes are conjured in rapid succession while advancing forward.

Nee gee gee gee!
ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad1.pngASBDPad4.png + ASBL.png/ASBM.png/ASBH.png ON GROUND IN AIR OK

Pet Shop quickly launches a small icicle from his mouth upwards that then falls in an arc, functioning as an anti-air attack. This is a middle attack that cannot be blocked crouching. The attack button inputted determines the distance and trajectory line the icicle travels.

Pet Shop, his eyes locked onto the opponent, rushes towards them in a forward-moving dive. If he connects, he summons and perches himself atop of Horus as the Stand bombards the opponent with smaller ice projectiles from all six of its arms, slowly trapping them in a large block of ice. Pet Shop then swoops upward an fires a focused ice shard out of his mouth at them, shattering the ice in the process. Finishing the assault, he conjures a gigantic ice missile and launches it at the incapacitated opponent from above, generating an icy explosion.

Trivia

Early designs for Pet Shop in Heritage for the Future.
  • Originally, Pet Shop did not appear until the characters are near DIO's Mansion for his fight with Iggy. The anime retroactively inserts him in place of a parrot that DIO has in Polnareff's flashback during his meeting with DIO. Also in the TV anime, Pet Shop is the only character who does not have a voice actor. His sound effects were done by SFX engineer, Yasamasa Koyama (小山恭正).[4]
  • In Heritage for the Future, Pet Shop is infamous among fighting game enthusiasts for being extremely broken and overpowered. Due to his high damage output and unpredictability, Pet Shop is almost universally banned across all competitive tournaments for the game.[5]
    • However, during early development, Pet Shop was initially much weaker than the rest of the cast. This was until Shinichiro Obata, a game designer at Capcom, went back and made various changes to re-balance the character. He later remarked that he "might've overdone it."[5][6]
