There are those rare men who have not a strap of good in them... the evil elite! Like me... and like you... So how about it? Will you become my servant?

The Agents of DIO (DIO(ディオ)の部下, DIO no Buka),[1] also called DIO's Servants (DIO(ディオ)の手下, DIO no Teshita),[2] are the primary antagonistic force in the original universe of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, with members appearing in Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, Stardust Crusaders, Diamond is Unbreakable and Stone Ocean.

The group is composed of the many people Dio Brando has hired, manipulated, or otherwise gathered around him. Even after his death, remnants of the group appear in later parts, many of them seeking revenge against the Joestar family for their leader's death.

In Stone Ocean, one of DIO's most loyal followers, Enrico Pucci, serves as the main antagonist and successor to DIO's goal of attaining heaven.

History

Phantom Blood

Using the Stone Mask's power,[3] Dio created his first group of loyal subordinates by converting human beings and corpses into zombies under his complete control. Notable members of this group include Jack the Ripper, Bruford, Tarkus, and Wang Chan.

Nearly all of Dio's zombies are exterminated by Jonathan Joestar and his allies at Windknight's Lot on the night of December 1, 1888.[4] His last known servant, Wang Chan, accompanies him on a mission to seize Jonathan's body, but Jonathan uses the last of his Ripple energy to cause an explosion that kills him.[5]

Battle Tendency

The last of Dio's zombies

While Dio himself does not appear, a flashback reveals that one of Dio's zombies was able to escape and infiltrate society as a commander in the Royal Air Force. Jonathan's son, George Joestar II, would later serve under him and learn his true nature, only to be killed before he can inform his associates. His wife, Elizabeth, murdered the commander in retaliation, destroying the last of Dio's known zombies.[6]

Agents faced during the journey to Egypt

After DIO resurfaces from the ocean in 1983, he obtains a Stand from Enya the Hag. With Enya as his adviser, DIO forms a new organization based in Egypt consisting mainly of Stand users. He recruits members from all across the world, whether by buying the services of mercenaries such as Hol Horse, manipulating individuals such as Noriaki Kakyoin and Jean Pierre Polnareff with flesh buds, or by swaying people such as N'Doul and Johngalli A. to his side with sheer charisma. A select few, including Mansaku Nijimura and Yoshihiro Kira, are entrusted with a Bow and Arrow capable of developing the Stands of those it pierces. At the same time, DIO befriends a priest named Enrico Pucci and impregnates four women with his children.

The users of the Egypt 9 Glory Gods

When Holy Joestar falls ill from inheriting a Stand from DIO, Jotaro Kujo, Joseph Joestar, and their allies set out to kill DIO. In response, Enya and DIO send the majority of their minions after the group, having them lie in wait throughout Egypt and the Middle East. After the Joestar group kills Enya's son, J. Geil, Enya attempts to take her revenge on the group herself, but fails and is executed by Steely Dan on DIO's orders.

As the Joestar group approaches the Egyptian border, DIO summons the users of the Stands known as the Egypt 9 Glory Gods to his mansion, ordering them to assassinate the Joestar group as well. However, the Glory Gods fail as well, and the group enters DIO's mansion. One of DIO's most fanatical minions, Vanilla Ice, succeeds in killing Muhammad Avdol and Iggy, but is defeated himself by Jean Pierre Polnareff and destroyed. Nukesaku, the last of DIO's servants within the mansion, is captured by Jotaro and forced to lead the group to DIO, who summarily kills him. DIO himself is killed shortly afterward following a decisive battle with Jotaro, and is eradicated by the light of the morning sun. While some members of DIO's group are confirmed to be deceased, the fates of many of his servants remain unknown.

Diamond is Unbreakable

Mansaku Nijimura's mutation

Unlike many of DIO's servants, Mansaku Nijimura remains in his hometown of Morioh as his master fights the Joestars. Upon DIO's death, the flesh bud inside Mansaku bursts, causing him to suffer a horrific mutation that leaves him unable to die. His sons, Keicho and Okuyasu, spend the following decade using their father's Bow and Arrow in hopes of finding a Stand that can put their father out of his misery.[7] On the other hand, Yoshihiro Kira dies prior to DIO's death, but lives on as a ghost in order to ensure the quiet life of his son Yoshikage.[8]

Along with the falcon Pet Shop, a parrot named Pet Sounds serves as part of DIO's forces, albeit from afar. After its master's death, the parrot is captured and returned to its owner, with whom it would remain for ten years before being stolen by Keicho Nijimura. Keicho then smuggled the bird to Morioh, where it subsequently fell into the hands of the ambitious police officer Kazuki Karaiya. Hol Horse and Boingo, two of DIO's former servants, follow Pet Sounds to Morioh, soon meeting Josuke Higashikata and Noriaki Kakyoin's cousin Ryoko. Ultimately, the group defeats Karaiya, and Pet Sounds is safely returned to its rightful owner.

Stone Ocean

Enrico Pucci and the sons of DIO

22 years after DIO's death, Enrico Pucci and Johngalli A. enact a plan to steal Jotaro's Stand and memories in the form of DISCs using Pucci's Whitesnake. While Johngalli A. acts entirely out of revenge, Pucci also needs Jotaro's memories to fulfill DIO's dream of obtaining heaven. To lure Jotaro to Green Dolphin Street Prison, where Johngalli A. is incarcerated and Pucci works as a chaplain, the two use their connections to frame Jotaro's daughter Jolyne Cujoh for murder.[9] When Jotaro comes to free his daughter, Pucci successfully steals his DISCs, murdering Johngalli A. himself to conceal his identity.[10] When the guardian of Pucci's collected Stand DISCs suddenly disappears along with Jotaro's Stand DISC, Pucci begins using his Stand to manipulate prisoners and prison staff into attacking Jolyne and her allies.

Later, after Pucci revives and fuses with a form of DIO known as the Green Baby, he sets out for Kennedy Space Center to complete his Stand's ability and fully obtain heaven. In Orlando, he fatefully meets with Ungalo, Rikiel, and Donatello Versus, three of DIO's sons. After awakening their Stand abilities, Pucci sends Ungalo and Rikiel after Jolyne's group, and later allows Versus to ambush Jolyne after they are put out of commission. When Versus secretly uses his Stand to return Weather Report's memories to him, awakening the true power of his Stand, Pucci kills both as he escapes.

Pucci eventually succeeds in completing his Stand, obtaining Made in Heaven and using it to kill Jolyne and her allies, with the exception of Emporio Alnino. Due to Made in Heaven's ability, all living things enter a new universal cycle where they gain precognitive understanding of their own fate, the very heaven DIO and Pucci sought. While attempting to finish Emporio, however, Pucci accidentally inserts Weather Report's Stand into the child, allowing him to defeat the priest. Afterward, the universe enters another cycle, putting an end to the condition of heaven and to DIO's legacy.

Eyes of Heaven

The information below derives from Eyes of Heaven which was not written and only supervised by Araki. As such, it may not be considered canon.

In Eyes of Heaven, a version of DIO from a parallel world known as Heaven-Attained DIO overwrites various allies and enemies throughout the series to bring them to his side. Heaven DIO also recruits the original DIO's advisers, Enya the Hag and Enrico Pucci, and forms loose contracts with both Diego Brando and DIO's past self. Despite the Joestar family managing to collect the Saint's Corpse and restore their allies with its power, Heaven-Attained DIO ultimately succeeds in obtaining both the Corpse and the expanded group's souls. However, he is defeated by Jotaro shortly afterward, and ceases to exist.
