Joseph Joestar (ジョセフ・ジョースター, Josefu Jōsutā) was confirmed for All-Star Battle R during the game's initial announcement trailer.[1] He was also 1 of 15 playable characters during the Evo 2022 Demo in August 5.[3]
Although his moveset remains fundamentally the same as his from All-Star Battle, a few tweaks have been made to both balance the character and fit him into the overall gameplay changes that All-Star Battle R brought.
Having debuted in the Battle Tendency anime and later voiced Joseph in the original All-Star Battle, Tomokazu Sugita reprises his role in this game. As with the majority of the game's roster, Joseph's voice lines were either added or re-recorded.
Joseph has 1000 health and uses the Ripple (波紋, Hamon) Battle Style, which allows him to use the "Ripple Breathing" special to charge his Heart Heat Gauge. He can also draw from his Heart Heat Gauge in order to perform Ripple-enhanced versions of his various skills, increasing their power and utility.
Joseph performs a crouching backwards kick, knocking the opponent to the ground.

Style/Specials/Etc. (スタイル/特殊技/その他)
Ripple Breathing (波紋の呼吸)
ON GROUND CHARGEABLE
Joseph breathes out to produce the Ripple, charging his Heart Heat Gauge.
There are 5 different poses Joseph can strike while using this technique, all being the same as his Stylish Evade poses.
Rebuff Overdrive (波 紋 肘 支 疾 走)
+ for ½ HH ON GROUND
Joseph fortifies himself with the Ripple and jumps in a rising double-elbow attack, knocking the opponent high into the air if he connects. Joseph gains super armor during this, making him only able to be interrupted by Throws and HHA/GHA. This move functions as a reversal and anti-air, as well as a command normal that can chain into Joseph's skills. (Comboable)
Joseph imbues his body with the Ripple to guard against attacks at the cost of 0.1 a bar of the Heart Heat Gauge. By holding the input, Joseph will continue guarding, causing the Heart Heat Gauge to continuously drain. The skill will last as long as the input is held or until the Heart Heat Gauge empties. Except for Throws, this skill defends against all attacks, including unblockable moves. It also prevents chip damage.
Now you've pissed me off! (オレは頭きてんだぜ~~~~~!!)
+ ON GROUND
Joseph moves forward slightly and attacks downward with his elbow, bouncing the opponent off the ground on-hit.
Attack type: Middle Damage: 32 Startup frames: 23
I'm so outta here! (逃げるんだよォ!)
ON GROUND
Joseph turns around and runs away from his opponent.
"Guess I did it again!" Level (またまたやらせていただきましたァンLv)
Passive
Exclusive to Joseph is an icon of his striped scarf and a level number above his Heart Heat Gauge that displays what level this system is currently at. When one of Joseph's counters (Don't you get it?, Guess I did it again!, and Your next line is...) is successfully activated, the level will increase up to a maximum of three times. Every level Joseph gains will passively increase the damage of all Ripple-based and Ripple-enhanced skills. Levels gained are permanent; They will remain for the rest of the match and will not reset in-between rounds.
Rumble Mode (ゴゴゴモード)
Activates below 30% health
This mode is automatically activated once Joseph falls below 30% health. It increases his attack power, as well as the rate at which the Heart Heat Gauge rises, while also decreasing the rate at which the Guard Gauge drops.
Skills (コマンド技)
Clacker Volley (クラッカーヴォレイ)
+ // or for ½ HH ON GROUND
Joseph pulls out a pair of Clackers and spins them while sliding forward, hitting the opponent multiple times. The distance Joseph travels increases in order with vulnerability also increasing. The skill can link into follow-up skills. Using the Ripple variant increases the damage and sends the opponent flying, preventing follow-up skills from properly connecting.
Joseph takes out a second pair of Clackers and proceeds to rapidly spin them in a melee assault, delivering a finishing blow that will knock the opponent off their feet. (Flash Cancel comboable) Using the Ripple variant increases the damage and launches the opponent into the air at a higher angle.
Joseph reels back before swinging his Clackers downward, knocking the opponent into the air and causing them to bounce off the ground when they land. Using the Ripple variant increases the damage and causes the opponent to crumple to the ground instead.
A counter that increases Joseph's "Guess I did it again!" Level upon success. Joseph interrupts his Clacker assault and spins around to reveal two pairs Clackers interlocked behind his back. Should the opponent strike him in that moment with a non-Throw/HHA/GHA, Joseph retaliates with both pairs, striking at the same time at full force and propelling the opponent far back. This skill is able to automatically correct Joseph's orientation if Clacker Volley is sidestepped. (Flash Cancel comboable) Using the Ripple variant increases the damage.
Joseph channels the Ripple into a bottle of cola to pop it open, launching the cap at an upwards angle as a projectile that knocks the opponent into the air. The attack button inputted determines the trajectory of the cap's flight. The height the opponent is knocked into the air increases in order, but so does the vulnerability. This attack can function as an anti-air. If using the Ripple variant, Joseph instead uses a tequila bottle, launching the cork. Once they hit the ground, a coconut will then fall from above onto the opponent.
+ // or for ½ HH (hold button to return Clackers) ON GROUND CHARGEABLE
Joseph throws a spinning pair of Clackers as a projectile. The speed of the projectile increases in order while also increasing vulnerability. If using the Ripple variant, Joseph will throw two Clackers. If the button is held long enough, the Clackers will boomerang back towards Joseph, allowing them to hit the opponent a second time and even interrupting them if Joseph is being attacked. (Comboable)
Joseph pulls out a sledgehammer and smashes down with it in a large overhead swing, bouncing the opponent off the ground. The attack can be charged to increase its damage drastically and make it unblockable, but leaves Joseph more vulnerable. Due to its massive range, it can function as an anti-air. If using the Ripple variant, the attack deals more damage and when fully charged, the skill can cause a groundbounce on downed opponents.
A counter that increases Joseph's "Guess I did it again!" Level upon success. Joseph instantly braces himself with the Ripple for a short instance. If the opponent triggers it, Joseph channels the entirety of the guard's Ripple energy into them in a heavy blast, shocking them repeatedly and causing them to crumple to the ground. This counter will not activate against Middle attacks. (Comboable)
A counter that increases Joseph's "Guess I did it again!" Level upon success. He momentarily pauses and puts his hands on his hips, saying a line of dialogue as he does. Should the opponent trigger the counter, the battle is halted as Joseph correctly predicts the opponent's next line. This has the added effect of replenishing half a bar of Heart Heat Gauge, while simultaneously draining half of his opponent's own. The opponent will also be pushed or knocked away. This counter is unique from others in the game in that it can only be used once during the entire battle, becoming unavailable upon success.
The line that Joseph predicts is the opponent's first default taunt. When the opponent responds, their "talking" cut-in appears onscreen before switching to their "taunted" cut-in as they gasp.
Attack type: Counter Startup frames: 5
Throw (投げ技)
Hah! Moron! (このタコ!!)
2 ATK buttons at close range or ( to back-throw) ON GROUND
Joseph manhandles his opponent. The resulting attack changes depending on the direction the opponent is thrown.
Forward: Joseph holds the opponent in a reverse headlock, and reverse-kicks them in the face three times before spinning around and kicking them once more to knock them away.
Backward: Joseph swings around to the opponent's other side to catch them in a side headlock, and proceeds to give them a rough noogie before throwing them to the ground.
Attack type: Throw Damage: 130 Startup frames: 7
Heart Heat Attack / Great Heat Attack (HHA / GHA)
This means war! (宣戦布告だぜ!!)
+ 2 ATK Buttons ON GROUND
Declaring war on his opponent, Joseph suddenly pulls a tommy gun out from behind himself and fires a rapid volley of 28 bullets. This HHA does not require the first bullet to connect in order to work and will not stop until it finishes or Joseph is interrupted. At any time during the attack, but not after, Joseph may use a supplementary follow-up attack.
Joseph slides in and swings upwards with the butt of the Tommy Gun. If he connects, the opponent is knocked into the air as he charges the Ripple into the gun and blasts the energy into them (a reference to one of his opening attacks against Straizo). This attack deals more damage depending on Joseph's current "Guess I did it again!" Level and can correct Joseph's orientation should the opponent have Sidestepped the initial bullet volley for a surprise attack.
Lemme show you my "tricks" of the trade! (だましの「手品」だッ!)
+ 3 ATK Buttons, or ON GROUND WHEN DOWNED
Joseph yanks a hidden string trap up from the ground. If they are caught, Joseph suddenly pulls out two pairs of Ripple-charged Clackers and delivers a lengthy attack combo, relentlessly beating the opponent while exclaiming "Ripple Overdrive Beat!". Joseph then briefly stops his assault to Ripple Breathe with a smile, charging more energy into his clackers, before hitting the opponent with all four in a finishing blast, sending them flying. This attack can strike a downed opponent. This GHA deals more damage depending on Joseph's current "Guess I did it again!" Level. If the initial string trap misses, Joseph reacts with a shocked expression, yelling "OH NOOOO! (オー、ノーッ)."
Lemme show you my "tricks" of the trade! First a little rope magic... Ripple Overdrive Beat! Get outta town! Clacker Volley! I'll smash you good! (だましの「手品」だッ! ロープマジック成功! 波 紋 疾 走のビート! 去りやがれッ! クラッカーヴォレイ! 打ち砕いてやるぜ!)

Assist System (アシストシステム)
Assault Assist (アサルトアシスト)
ON GROUND
A two-stock assist. Joseph lands in, pulling out a pair of Clackers and spinning them while sliding forward, hitting the opponent multiple times. He then takes out a second pair of Clackers and proceeds to rapidly spin them in a melee assault, delivering a finishing blow that will knock the opponent off their feet before posing and running back off-screen.
Attack type: High Damage: 124
Reversal Assist (リバーサルアシスト)
ON GROUND
A one-stock assist. Joseph jumps into the opponent, kicking them and knocking them away. He then poses before running back off-screen.
The move now costs 0.5 a bar of the Heart Heat Gauge rather than 0.1.
Now you've pissed me off!
+ ON GROUND
Joseph moves significantly less forward than he did in All-Star Battle.
"Guess I did it again!" Level
Passive
The damage increase is no longer a set multiplier per level; instead, each move's damage is increased separately.

Now who's laughing?!

The attack's input has been changed. Formally, no movement input was required, but now the move requires along with ///.
I'll smash you good!
+ // or for ½ HH duing Clacker Volley
The attack's input has been changed. Formally, it was in place of . Also, in All-Star Battle, only the Ripple-enhanced variant of the skill would cause the opponent to be launched into the air and bounce off the ground when landing. The normal variants had no special effect. Now, the normal variants cause a launch and groundbounce while the Ripple-enhanced variant causes a crumple.
Don't you get it?
+ // or for ½ HH duing Clacker VolleyON GROUND
This skill now hits twice when successfully activated, with the first hit binding the opponent. This makes it impossible for the opponent to react after triggering the counter. Additionally, it can no longer be Flash Canceled unless the counter is successfully activated.
How 'bout a cold one?
+ // or for ½ HH
The height the opponent is launched now increases in order, while in All-Star Battle, the normal variants all launch the opponent at the same angle. The recovery is also noticeably shorter than in All-Star Battle. For the
variant, the coconut now falls on the opponent earlier and can no longer be Flash Canceled.
Clacker Boomerang
+ // or for ½ HH (hold button to return Clackers) ON GROUND CHARGEABLE
Only the Ripple-enhanced variant of the skill can boomerang back to Joseph now instead of all variants.
Time to bring down the hammer!
+ // or for ½ HH ON GROUND WHEN DOWNED CHARGEABLE
When fully charged, the Ripple-enhanced variant of the skill can now cause a groundbounce on downed opponents.
Guess I did it again!
+ for ½ HH ON GROUND
The move now costs 0.5 a bar of the Heart Heat Gauge rather than 0.25.
Your next line is:
+ ON GROUND
The attack's input has been changed. Formally, it was + in place of + . Also, if an opponent triggers the counter while they are in the air, they can no longer be comboed with HHA after they are knocked away. Additionally, instead of chuckling when he strikes his pose, Joseph says a line of dialogue now.
Heart Heat Attack / Great Heat Attack (HHA / GHA)
This means war!
+ 2 ATK Buttons ON GROUND
This HHA does not push opponents as far back as it did in All-Star Battle. It also deals significantly less damage now.

The main character of Part 2: Battle Tendency. He is the grandson of Jonathan Joestar, and a great tactician who can outfox his foes. In the final battle with the Pillar Men, he launches Kars into space using a volcanic eruption.[6] He ends up back in New York as a realtor. He later becomes the user of the StandHermit Purple.

In commemoration of the release of Stroheim as the 2nd paid DLC character for ASBR, the Japanese ASBR Twitter account hosted a giveaway of 20 sets of 3 ASBR Battle Tendency badges,[7] although only to be delivered to addresses in Japan.[8] The badges in question contain the ASBR render images of Rudol von Stroheim, Kars, and Joseph respectively.
The campaign started on February 3, 2023, and lasted until February 19 at 11:59pm JST. To enter the giveaway lottery, users only had to:
Retweet the tweet that announced the giveaway in the first place.
However, Twitter accounts set to private were illegible for the giveaway. Unfollowing the ASBR Twitter account before the end of the giveaway also deemed users illegible. Furthermore, attempting to join the giveaway with multiple accounts would have caused all of those accounts to lose their eligiblity to win.[8]
The giveaway was directly implemented by Bandai Namco themselves, with no third party involvement, and the winners of the giveaway were notified via Twitter DMs. Said winners are planned to be announced sometime in early March, 2023.[8]
Slowed down appearance of the projectile to match with the visual appearance.

"Don't you get it?" skill
Fixed an issue where it was possible to Flash Cancel this skill after the counter was triggered, but before the hitbox of the follow-up attack spawned.
Fixed a bug where when the Ripple enhanced version's counter was successfully triggered and Joseph's "Guess I did it again!" level was 1 or higher, the opponent would be forcefully downed.
"Clacker Boomerang" skill
The non-Ripple enhanced version of the skill will now return when the projectile is guarded.
Fixed a bug where when the Ripple enhanced version was used and the button was held, if the next normal variant of this skill was activated by holding the attack button, the projectile would hit twice.
"This'll blow you away!" HHA follow-up
Fixed so that this HHA follow-up will no longer suffer damage scaling from the hits of the "This means war!" HHA.
