Steven Steel (スティーブン・スティール, Sutībun Sutīru) é um aliado secundário na sétima parte de JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Steel Ball Run.

Steel é o promotor da corrida Steel Ball Run e marido de Lucy Steel. Um homem maduro com uma vida colorida, a Steel Ball Run que ele promove é embrulhada junto dele nos planos de Funny Valentine.

Aparência

Steven Steel é um homem velho de 190 cm, e assim como Foo Fighters, ele usa um chapéu cobrindo sua cabeça em um círculo com pontas serradas.

Sua vestimenta normalmente consiste de um casaco de colarinho alto com várias borlas e calças. Steven também usa óculos retangulares.

A obra é conhecida por sua mudança de cores entre as mídias, a informação apresentada abaixo pode ou não ser canônica.

Personalidade

Steven pronuncia um discurso dramático

Steven Steel é mostrado ser um personagem ansioso apesar de ter uma fachada ousada como o organizador e hospedeiro da corrida Steel Ball Run.[1] Durante a maioria de sua vida, Steven Steel cultivou uma personalidade excêntrica e bombástica, sendo um artista, esportista e outros trabalhos no centro do palco, mas encontraria sua vocação como o promotor de vários eventos.[2] Apesar dos altos e baixos de sua carreira, Steven conseguiu sempre voltar ao sucesso. Steven também projeta a imagem de um promotor rigído e confiante que aborda qualquer problema com calma e autoridade. Quando um balconista reporta vários problemas durante as preparações, Steven calmamente aumenta o orçamento e ordena fazer claro que encrenqueiros serão despejados.[3] Privadamente, Steven é cheio de dúvidas e apenas sonha de uma quantidade modesta de fama, ficando contente que um jornal imprimiria seu nome mesmo que fosse na parte de baixo da página desde que sua contribuição fosse reconhecida.[4] Todos esses pensamentos são apenas compartilhados com sua esposa Lucy.

Steven Steel é um homem romântico tendo vários ideias. Ele notavelmente promove a Steel Ball Run como uma apologia ao espírito pioneiro da humanidade, com a intenção de fazê-la pela primeira vez, um homem só cruza os Estados Unidos com seu cavalo e aceitando todos outros veículos usados na corrida como um desafio a esse espírito. Ele também considera que "fracasso verdadeiro" é abandonar esse espírito pioneiro e evitar dificuldades.[5] Steven Steel também é contente com o pouco de fama que seus eventos lhe dão[4] mas não parece estar atrás de ganhos monetários, já que ele ofereceu todos os lucros da corrida para várias causas[6] e também se recusou a perder uma luta de propósito durante sua carreira como um boxeador, mesmo que ele fosse alvejado no joelho por gângsteres. Steven também tomou medidas para salvar Lucy da máfia como um meio de repagá-la pelo seu apoio.

Steven e Lucy são extremamente leais um ao outro

Steven tem um relacionamento platônico e privilegiado com sua esposa, Lucy. Tendo uma vez se apaixonado em sua juventude, Steven entrou em desespero por causa da morte de sua amada e jurou nunca amar novamente.[7] Verdadeiro à isso, apesar de ser o marido de Lucy e todos a considerando uma esposa troféu para um velho safado, Steven nunca a toca e a considera sua pupila.[8] Já que ela foi a primeira a encorajá-lo quando ele estava no fundo do poço de sua carreira e ele havia a salvo das garras de gângsteres, Steven e Lucy partilham de um grande afeto e confiança um pelo outro.[9] Steven é tão apegado a Lucy, que ele não hesita arriscar sua própria vida para salvá-la.[10]

Steven é um acumplicie relutante de Funny Valentine em encontrar as partes do Cadáver Santo, tendo aceitado colaborar embora ele não estivesse ciente da violência da operação.[11] Embora ele saiba sobre elas e tenha uma ideia vaga de seu poder, Steel permanece desinteressado pelas partes do Cadáver durante toda a corrida.

Promoção: Steven é um promotor talentoso, tendo ao seu nome vários eventos bizarros que ele promoveu e se tornaram histórias populares com o público, o que o tornou rico. Steven também é parcialmente responsável pela popularidade da corrida Steel Ball Run. Como um especialista em relações públicas, ele deu discursos inspiradores e arranjou coisas para que os jornalistas regularmente fossem capazes de observar e reportar sobre a corrida.

Cavalgamento: Steven Steel é um cavaleiro dotado. Tendo se juntado a cavalaria mas logo se aposentado do exercito por causa de uma doença, suas habilidades nunca foram postas à lucro durante sua vida. Entretanto, sua habilidade de cavalgamento se torna crucial quando ele aparece para ajudar Johnny, chocado por sua própria habilidade, e então mostra que ele pode cavalgar um cavalo perfeitamente e permite Johnny realizar outro Spin Dourado.

História

Passado

Steven na cavalaria dos Estados Unidos

Steven Steel nasceu em Nova Iorque em 1840 em uma família de imigrantes irlandeses. Seu pai era um ferreiro e Steven era o quarto de uma família de sete filhos. Quando ele tinha 15 anos ele se apixonou pela bela filha de um florista e os dois juraram ficarem juntos, mas ela morreu em um acidente de carruagem naquele mesmo ano. Ao mesmo tempo, Steven entrou em um estado profundo de desespero e jurou nunca mais se apaixonar. Ele se juntou à cavalaria mas nunca foi enviado para guerras nem expedições. Ele passou dois anos no hospital de uma ilha deserta. Nos anos seguintes ele trocou de emprego todo ano até seus 28 anos de idade. Estes empregos foram:

  • 1856-1863: Artista de circo. Ele começou com um truque simples e engoliu um peixe antes de fazê-lo sair de seu nariz disfarçado como um homem asiático como um trabalho de meio-tempo. Ele se tornou popular e Steven virou a estrela de seu circo em 1859. Steven então introduziria "A Luta de Mulheres Anãs", "O Homem com Olhos de Inseto" e "Porcos em Corda-Bamba" em 1861, todos populares. Entretanto, ele foi demitido em 1863 por causa de seu orgulho crescente.
  • 1865-1867: Boxeador. Entretanto, ele ignora um jogo manipulado e vence seus oponentes. Uma gangue atira em seu joelho por isso e ele abandona a carreira.
  • 1866: Agiota.

Ele desapareceu por 13 anos e então reapareceu como um aventureiro em busca de dinossauros na Costa Rica em 1881. Dois anos depois, ele se auto-proclamou um promotor e todos os jornais falaram sobre ele.[12]

One day, a scandal about a monkey disguised as an alien caused him to be dubbed as a fraud, but he had nothing to do with the scandal. No one believed him and he had to sell his mansion. At his worst moment, an idea came to change his luck, "a long distance horse-ride", the one thing he wasn't able to do in the cavalry. He searched for sponsors without results. Not having eaten in days and severely drunk he sat by the edge of the street, interrupted by a young Lucy Pendleton who was listening to his mumbling.[12]

Lucy came up with the idea of a race across the entire American continent with a winning prize of 50 million dollars. He scolds her for that idea and returned to the bar, got in a fight, and fell asleep behind the urinals. The next day, a group of people surrounded him and asked about the cross-continental race, willing to sponsor it. It is, however, hinted by Funny Valentine's comments on the Steel Ball Run being a venue to claim the Corpse Parts that he was behind Steven's sponsorship for the race.[12] In any case, Funny Valentine and Steven Steel would meet and organize the race together, Valentine notably choosing each steps of the race to uncover the Saint's Corpse while Steven Steel promoted the race to all newspapers.

Two years later, he remembered about the girl who gave him his chance. When he met her again, she was grown up and identical to his first love. Steven told her father he wanted to pay his daughter back for the favor she gave him, but her father told him that he was forced to sell his daughter to a gang to be a prostitute. To protect her, Steven told her father to lie about Lucy having lost her virginity to Steven, to force the gang to give her up. After Lucy returned, she offered to marry him. Initially, Steven objected to the idea, wishing for her to grow up, marry someone her age, and live a normal life, but eventually gave in and married her. Despite this, Steven was reported by Lucy as never laying a hand on her. The two would develop a deep relationship of trust and loyalty, which remained platonic.

As the promoter of the Steel Ball Run race, Steven is present in San Diego to give his final presentation of the race, oversee the organization of the starting line, and welcome important observers.

During the first stage, Steven notices Gyro Zeppeli's performance and orders a background check on this mysterious participant. He learns that he arrived in America on a royal boat but doesn't learn anything afterwards. However, Steven puts Gyro under watch, as a potential candidate for gathering the Corpse Parts. After the first stage, Steven is brought to a crime scene and sees the three disemboweled corpses of three racers. Not wanting to stop the race, Steven allows the sheriff to bring in Mountain Tim to investigate the matter.

During the second stage, Steven inquires about Gyro Zeppeli and if the Napolitan has a Corpse Part, which worries his assistant. Discussing with President Funny Valentine, Steel is shocked to hear him mentioning murdering Gyro so casually and protests about killing anyone, but he doesn't have any choice on the matter.

Steven continues to work on the race. Unbeknownst to him, Lucy also discovers the true goal of the Steel Ball Run and acts behind his back to keep the Corpse Parts out of Valentine's reach. Her operation ends when she infiltrates a presidential facility in Chicago and must disguise herself as Scarlet Valentine. Hot Pants fakes Lucy's death in order to protect her. "Lucy"'s corpse is found near the Fox River, off the shore of Lake Michigan. Steel is heartbroken for a moment but he glimpses the corpse and intuitively sees that Lucy's corpse is not genuine.

For approximately four weeks, doubt gnaws at Steven who cannot believe it was Lucy on the shore. In Philadelphia, Steven stays in a coach and examines several photos before coming to the conclusion that somehow the First Lady is Lucy. However, the agent Magent Magent confronts him and shoots him in the chest. Gravely wounded, Steel is then protected by Wekapipo who eventually puts Magent out of commission for good.

Steven is retrieved by the authorities and brought to Independence Hall, near Lucy. He is held captive but is not treated. Lucy manages to bring Steven outside of the compound, but it lured to Funny Valentine's ship. Valentine nonetheless swears to Lucy that he will not kill Steven. Steven is brought alongside Lucy on the presidential train to New Jersey.

During the battle between Johnny Joestar, Gyro Zeppeli and Funny Valentine, Steven regained consciousness and brought Lucy out of the train to save her from the effects of Ticket to Ride. Gyro takes Lucy and flees to the coast. Steven's intervention only delays Valentine's plans but do give Johnny a needed reprieve from Valentine's attack. Angry at this inconvenience, Valentine slams Steven against the car and stomps on his wounds, but refrains from killing him. After Valentine's defeat, Steven is seemingly healed by Johnny Joestar.

Steven Steel saves Johnny during the last stage

The three believe the battle to be over but Johnny notices that someone has taken the corpse. There is a last, unknown enemy to confront. Steven mentions a vault specially built under Trinity Church to store the Saint's Corpse and advises Johnny to follow the race to find the enemy. During this, he witnesses Lucy behead Diego Brando with the intent of killing the other Diego Brando. Steven reappears in Manhattan Bridge riding a horse towards Johnny Joestar. Johnny has been hit with his own Super Spin but Steven tells him to take his arm. Steven's riding allows Johnny to shoot himself again and free himself from Tusk ACT4's infinite Spin. Steven then joins Lucy in the vault and is content with sealing the Saint's Corpse's in it, with no proprietor to claim it.

Após a Corrida

In the aftermath of the Steel Ball Run, Steven Steel is criticized for the huge loss of human lives during the race but he silences the press when he gives all the money he's won through the race to charity. What happens to Steven Steel afterward is unknown, and he later passes away.[13]
