Star Platinum (スタープラチナ(星の白金), Sutā Purachina) is the Stand of Jotaro Kujo, primarily featured in the third part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Stardust Crusaders. It also appears in the fourth part, Diamond is Unbreakable, and the sixth part, Stone Ocean.
Star Platinum is a close-range Stand with exceptional strength and speed, as well as gaining the ability to stop time during the fight against DIO. Its overwhelming power, coupled with Jotaro's fighting prowess, make it one of the strongest and most iconic Stands in the series.
Appearance
Star Platinum is a humanoid Stand, resembling a tall, well-built man of similar proportions to Jotaro, if not more muscular. It has been stated to have a somewhat blackish tone.[6] In colored art, its skin is often a hue between purple, blue, green, and small bits of gold. Its face and body have varying colors.
It has long, flowing hair with a darker shade above its eyes and on the bridge of its nose, blurring the distinction between its hair and head. The spaces under its eyes and on its cheeks and chin are a darker color and divided clearly from the space around its nose and mouth. It wears a cap on its chin, and a metallic headband in three pieces, the central piece of which is shaped as a vertical ellipse. Initially, its facial features were very similar to Jotaro's.
A wavy line runs from each arm to the front of its torso, continuing down its legs. It has a minimal range of clothing and armor, including a short, circular scarf, shoulder pads with a spiral design, long gloves with studs on the back, knee and elbow guards, a loincloth, and short boots (which became knee-length as of Part 6). Earlier depictions in the manga had Star Platinum wearing pants underneath its loincloth, and the Stardust Crusaders OVA keeps this design aspect throughout.

Personality
Despite not having a consciousness of its own, Jotaro has described Star Platinum as very violent. It is silent, except when it throws punches, during which it cries "ORAORAORA!" loudly and repeatedly. With a relatively human face, it may show hints of emotion by scowling and smiling.
Star Platinum demonstrates a sense of self-preservation, as seen when it halts a bullet Jotaro experimentally shoots at his own head,[7] protects an incapacitated Jotaro from DIO's attacks during Time Stop, and revives him from near-death by directly pumping his heart[8] (however, considering Star Platinum's pioneering role in the series, this capacity may speak primarily to the metaphysical or subconscious qualities of Stand users).
In the original manga, Star Platinum, early on, is seen with a wide, disconcerting smile. Later on, Star Platinum gains Jotaro's stoic visage, with its future grins only serving to warn the unlucky target of Jotaro's rage that they are about to experience an unimaginable amount of pain.
Star Platinum is named after the seventeenth Tarot Card, The Star, which symbolizes optimism, discernment, and hope.
Abilities
Star Platinum is a Close-Range Stand with a basic reach of only two meters from Jotaro's body, but boasts unparalleled speed, power, and precision.[9][10] In Stardust Crusaders, Star Platinum is considered the strongest Stand in the Joestar Group,[11] eventually surpassing DIO's The World.[12][13] Several characters throughout Diamond is Unbreakable and Stone Ocean refer to it as the "strongest Stand"[14] or an "invincible Stand".[15][16][17] Moreover, when Star Platinum first appears in Stone Ocean, it is stated to be the strongest Stand ability of all time at that point.[18][19]
Superhuman Capabilities
As one of the most powerful Stands featured in the series, Star Platinum has an overwhelming physical prowess in every basic characteristic, save for range. Coupled with Jotaro's own cleverness in combat, the Stand is capable of defeating most Stand users without the use of any complex abilities. In addition, Jotaro's eventual discovery of its true potential only makes it all the more formidable in combat. Star Platinum primarily excels in attacks that combine its power, speed, and precision.[20] By combining speed and precision, it can intercept countless flying knives one after another, as demonstrated in the battle with DIO.[20][21] Its superhuman capabilities apply to various parts of its body.[10]
- Super Strength: Star Platinum possesses immense strength, being able to throw a Jeep carrying four men and a girl out of the path of an 18-wheeler with one hand, later pulling the same Jeep out of a canyon with only a car as a counter-weight,[22] and destroy large artificial diamonds within seconds.[23] This same strength allows it to launch itself and its user into the air to clear long distances.
- Super Speed: Star Platinum boasts phenomenal speed. It is able to intercept a bullet fired from point-blank range[7] and briefly contend with Silver Chariot dual-wielding Anubis.[24]
- Precision: Star Platinum is incredibly precise; it can surgically remove an object embedded in a person's skull without ill effect, catch both a bullet and a minuscule Stand like Lovers between his thumb and forefinger in midair, and create a near photo-realistic drawing of a small fly from a dark, blurry photo.[1]
- Enhanced Eyesight: Star Platinum utilizes eagle-like eyesight throughout Stardust Crusaders. Jotaro has used Star Platinum's eyes to see four kilometers across a desert,[25] as well as identify meaningful details, such as a specific type of fly in high-resolution images.[1] It can also follow a card shuffle performed by a professional gambler, subsequently recounting the entire new order of the deck.
- Enhanced Lung Capacity: Star Platinum inhales with superhuman lung capacity, capable of sucking in the entire fog Stand Justice and holding it long enough for its user to suffocate.[26]
- Enhanced Durability: Star Platinum's defense allows it to defend its user from various attacks such as Hierophant Green's Emerald Splash or The World's strikes. It is also able to minimize environmental damage when Jotaro is sent flying through objects.
Techniques
Star Platinum can forcibly extend its middle and index fingers to around double its original length, allowing it to perform sneak attacks and stab opponents from slightly outside his own range.[28] The technique's frequency of usage decreased as battles intensified.[29] Star Platinum only uses Star Finger twice in the manga: once against Dark Blue Moon, and once against Forever. However, in the anime, it uses it a third time against Polnareff wielding Anubis.[30] The length of his extended fingers is made significantly longer in certain media outside the manga, like the anime.[31][32][33]
Star Platinum: The World
During the final battle with DIO in Stardust Crusaders, Star Platinum awakens the ability to stop time. The technique is referred to by Jotaro as Star Platinum: The World, named after the late antagonist's Stand, The World.
When activated, Star Platinum is able to halt the flow of time for a brief moment (several seconds from the point of view of Jotaro), causing everything around him to appear frozen in place. During these few seconds, Jotaro remains conscious, able to move or interact with any object or person within his range, and apply force to them. Likewise, he is able to act within a time-stop activated by another source, such as The World, although his time limit remains (see the table below). He is unable to use the ability consecutively, requiring a few seconds in between each usage.[34]
Prime | 5 seconds[35] |
---|---|
Part 4 | 0.5[36] to 1 second[37] |
Start of Part 6 | 2 seconds[38][a] |
End of Part 6 | 5 seconds[39] |
Jotaro is still aware and can perceive what happens for the duration of a time-stop activated by another source even if he does not stop time himself, and can start using up his duration of time-stop at any point during this stopped time; if the duration of his stopped time exceeds the limit of the other user's time-stop, he is able to act even after they stop being able to move. The inverse applies if another user stops time during his time-stop.[40] Jotaro's ability to perceive stopped time is reliant on being aware of his own power, as he lacks the ability to do so prior to his fight with DIO.
In Jotaro's prime, the ability lasts up to five seconds,[19] but the duration decreases over time due to lack of use.[41][42] Ten years after awakening the ability, Jotaro is only able to stop time for half a second at the start of Diamond is Unbreakable,[42] but extends it to one second through practice over the course of the Part.[43][b]
At the start of Stone Ocean, Jotaro is able to stop time for up to two seconds (though the validity of this information is questionable, as it is only mentioned within a dream created by Whitesnake). During the final battle at Kennedy Space Center against Made in Heaven, he is once again able to stop time for up to five seconds.[44]
Star Platinum Over Heaven
In the story mode of Eyes of Heaven, Jotaro eventually comes face to face with Heaven-Attained DIO, the game's final boss. As their fight went on, Star Platinum and The World's same-type aspect came into play once more, enabling Star Platinum to evolve into Star Platinum Over Heaven and learn The World Over Heaven's signature ability to overwrite reality.
This grants Star Platinum the potentially-limitless ability to rewrite time and reality itself, its only true limitation being that it requires the use of its hands to do so. Despite this new ability, Star Platinum does not change in appearance, unlike The World Over Heaven.
As a result of its powers, all of the temporal anomalies occurring throughout the story disappear after the death of Heaven-Attained DIO. The world reverts back to normal, and Star Platinum loses its new ability.[45]

- Star Platinum is the most portrayed Stand in the series as of Stone Ocean, appearing in 398 panels. Behind it are Sex Pistols (385 panels) and Silver Chariot (367 panels).[46][c]
Notes
- ↑ The validity of this information is unclear, as it was only mentioned within a dream created by Whitesnake.
- ↑ Chapter 292: Toshikazu Hazamada (Surface), Part 4 states that he can stop time for one to two seconds, but in the battle against Ratt afterward, Jotaro says himself that he can only stop time for one second.
- ↑ JOJO A-GO!GO! actually stated that Star Platinum appeared in 351 panels since it was published before Stone Ocean finished. Thus, it was in third place at that time. The Stone Ocean panels were counted manually.
