Old Joseph Joestar (老ジョセフ・ジョースター) was confirmed for All-Star Battle R during the game's initial announcement trailer.[1]

Although his moveset remains fundamentally the same as his from All-Star Battle, a few tweaks have been made to both balance the character and fit him into the overall gameplay changes that All-Star Battle R brought along.

Old Joseph's voice actor, Unsho Ishizuka reprises his role in this game, replacing Tomokazu Sugita. However, due to his passing in 2018, his voicelines were reused from Eyes of Heaven. Because of this, some of his voicelines from the original All-Star Battle are not present.

Gameplay

Old Joseph has 950 health and uses both the Stand (スタンド, Sutando) and Ripple (波紋, Hamon) Battle Styles, fighting foes with Hermit Purple. During a fight, he can use several different attacks that were featured in Stardust Crusaders.

The distance Old Joseph moves and the damage dealt increases in ASBL.pngASBM.pngASBH.png order, but the greater the increase, the longer the recovery. While this skill visually shows the Ripple being used, only the ASBS.png variant actually deals Ripple damage. (Flash Cancel comboable)
By spending half a stock of HH, Old Joseph can empower the skill, causing it to execute faster, move Old Joseph forward more, deal more damage, and crumple the opponent when hit. (Comboable)

Cunning Tactician

Expending a one and a half stocks of the HHG, Old Joseph wraps Hermit Purple's Ripple-conducting vines around his torso to automatically protect himself while chuckling. While this ability is in effect, the next non-HHA/GHA Middle/High attack dealt to Old Joseph by the opponent will cause Hermit Purple to burst out of his shirt. If they are in range, the attack will shock them and push them away. (Comboable)
Unlike other counters, Old Joseph will not be protected from damage or hit effects while it is in effect. He is also vulnerable to Low attacks. However, it will trigger against projectiles, though it is possible for the opponent to avoid the counter attack due to it having a set range. If Old Joseph uses his HHA while this counter is active, the effect will be canceled.

Coal Tar

Old Joseph summons Hermit Purple to grab and bring a drum full of coal tar in from off-screen, before crushing it to spill the black liquid all over the floor. If the ASBM.png or ASBH.png variant is used, Old Joseph will move forward while swinging the drum forward. The drum itself has a hitbox and can hit the opponent as it's being swung in. If it hits the opponent, it hits twice, with the first hit knocking the opponent into the air while the second causes a hard knockdown. The distance forward Old Joseph moves and the damage dealt increases in ASBL.pngASBM.pngASBH.png order, but the greater the increase, the longer the recovery. (Flash Cancel comboable)

The coal tar puddle will remain for a set period as a trap that can make Old Joseph himself or his opponent slip and bounce off the ground if they step in it, dealing minor damage. This skill is a reference to his battle with Empress.

Old Joseph uses Hermit Purple to grab the ceiling (regardless of whether or not the stage has a physical ceiling) and pull himself away from the opponent. He can cancel this special with his Jumping Heavy Attack, which will alter his momentum. If input on the ground, Old Joseph will perform a small jump and pull himself backward. This makes the special excellent for evasive purposes such as creating distance or escaping an opponent.

Expending half of a stock of the HHG, Old Joseph follows up by wrapping Hermit Purple around the opponent as he then sends heavy Ripple pulses through it to shock them, leaving the opponent in a bound state momentarily before causing them to crumple to the ground. This skill deals more damage if the attack button is rapidly tapped. (Comboable)

Damage: 59 ~ 73 (depending on number of hits)

Old Joseph swings Hermit Purple at a low angle to strike the opponent. If it connects, he pulls the opponent towards him, causing them to crumple to the ground when they reach him. Notably, this skill is capable of 'picking up' a downed opponent by grabbing and forcing them back to their feet, crumpling them once more and leaving them open to more attacks. (Comboable)
While this skill normally hits multiple times, it only hits once if the opponent blocks it.

Old Joseph breathes in and braces himself with the Ripple. If the counter is triggered, he will retaliate by using said Ripple to blast the opponent away and onto the floor. He then utilizes Hermit Purple to launch himself into the air and performs a powerful downwards chop on the downed opponent to knock them away.

This action is not unlike how Joseph uses cameras to capture spirit photos of DIO during Stardust Crusaders, destroying them with a chop, although on a much larger scale.

Calling forth Hermit Purple, Old Joseph fires out its vines out in a long-range whip-like attack. If it strikes the opponent, he tightly binds them with the vines before heaving and swinging them over his head in a devastating overhead slam, bouncing them off the ground. With another yank, Old Joseph pulls the opponent back into the air, and takes a short moment to breathe in to channel the Ripple. He finishes the attack by pulling them back towards himself and delivering a focused and powerful Ripple Overdrive chop to the neck, sending them flying.

A one-stock assist. Old Joseph lands in and swings Hermit Purple out low to the ground. If it hits, he pulls the opponent towards him, causing them to crumple to the ground when they reach him. This skill is capable of 'picking up' a downed opponent by grabbing and forcing them back to their feet, crumpling them once more and leaving them open to more attacks. He then poses before jumping into the air and pulling himself up and back off-screen with Hermit Purple.

This skill is also now a High instead of a Middle. Additionally, the normal variants no longer knock opponents to the ground in a soft knockdown, instead causing normal hitstun, whereas the Ripple-enhanced variant now crumples the opponent instead of causing a groundbounce. Furthermore, Joseph does not move as far forward as he did in All-Star Battle, though it's less apparent with the weaker variants of the skill.

The hitbox for the drum that Old Joseph brings out has been extended inward, meaning that this skill will no longer whiff on opponents at close range, making it more reliable overall. It also now deals two hits instead of one, with the first launching the opponent while the second causes a hard knockdown. The hitbox for the puddle has changed as well, with it being smaller now than it was in All-Star Battle, which makes it harder for Old Joseph to accidentally trigger his own trap. The puddle now causes a groundbounce rather than a hard knockdown and is a High rather than a Low.

Old Joseph's theme is ASBR Music.png Can't Hate The Guy (にくめないヤツ, Nikumenai Yatsu), and can be unlocked in-game by landing the "Hermit Purple!" skill in All-Star Battle Mode's Old Joseph vs DIO Normal Battle.

Its name is in reference to Lisa Lisa saying a similar line in Chapter 30 of Battle Tendency after Joseph managed to complete his training in an unusual way. Specifically she says "To use his disadvantage like that, a clever guy!"
