Kars (カーズ, Kāzu) was confirmed for All-Star Battle R during the game's initial announcement trailer.[1]

His moveset is fundamentally the same as his from All-Star Battle, with a few tweaks being made to both balance the character and fit him into the overall gameplay tweaks that All-Star Battle R brought.

Kars's voice actor, Kazuhiko Inoue reprises his role from the Battle Tendency anime adaptations and All-Star Battle. As with the majority of the game's roster, voicelines for Kars were either added or re-recorded.

Gameplay

Kars has 850 health and uses the Light Mode Battle Style. During a fight, he can use various attacks and abilities featured in Battle Tendency.

Light Mode

Kars can activate or deactivate Light Mode, causing all attacks with his Bone Blades to deal more hits, and therefore damage. While active, attacking, guarding, and taking damage will not build Heart Heat. The mode can be canceled at any time by inputting ASBS.png. If Kars is knocked down, this mode will be forcibly deactivated. It will also automatically be deactivated if Kars uses his HHA.
Brilliant Bone Blades
ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad2.png + ASBS.png ON GROUND
Expending one stock of the Heart Heat Gauge causes all of Kars's attacks that utilize his Bone Blades to deal more hits, and therefore damage. While active, attacking, guarding, and taking damage will not build Heart Heat, but Kars's HHA can be activated for no cost. However, activating it will automatically cancel this mode. This mode will be forcibly canceled if Kars is knocked down.

Kars kicks forward as a blade comes out of his foot, launching the opponent into the air if hit. A command normal that can chain into Kars's skills. (Comboable)

Rumble Mode (ゴゴゴモード, Gogogo Mōdo)
Activates when under 30% health
This mode is automatically activated once Kars falls below 30% health. It increases his attack power, as well as the rate at which the Heart Heat Gauge rises, while also decreasing the rate at which the Guard Gauge drops.

Kars dives forward, arm blade extended, to slice through the opponent, knocking them into the air if connected. The damage dealt and the distance forward that Kars dashes increases in ASBL.pngASBM.pngASBH.png order, but the greater the increase, the longer the recovery. Each version of the attack has its own properties.
  • Light (ASBL.png): Kars will not move through to the other side of the opponent.
  • Medium (ASBM.png): Kars will move through to the other side of the opponent. If used up close, the two hits of the skill will not naturally combo into each other.
  • Heavy (ASBH.png): Kars will move through to the other side of the opponent and will perform an uppercut with his blade.

This skill does more damage if Kars is in Light Mode or if Brilliant Bone Blades is active.

In a single motion of his arm, Kars unleashes multiple slashes in front of himself with great range. If it connects, the last hit will launch the opponent into the air. The distance Kars moves forward and number of hits, and therefore damage, increases in ASBL.pngASBM.pngASBH.png order, but the greater the increase, the longer the recovery. The slashes are capable of destroying incoming non-GHA projectiles. (Flash Cancel comboable)

Kars performs a reverse kick that sends the opponent flying into the stage wall. The attack can also be performed in mid-air. The distance Kars moves forward and the damage dealt increases in ASBL.pngASBM.pngASBH.png order, but the greater the increase, the longer the recovery. The ASBH.png version deals high guard damage.
Because this skill can launch opponents across the entirety of the stage, it can provide setup into Kars's GHA if used when facing away from a stage wall.

Kars utilizes light to disappear, with his subsequent reappearance and attack depending on the type of button inputted.
  • Light (ASBL.png): He reappears above the opponent with a foot blade extended in a dive kick to knock them down, hard enough for them to bounce. It is plus on block, meaning that Kars can act before the opponent can if this skill is blocked. (Comboable)
  • Medium (ASBM.png): He reappears in front of the opponent and strikes them with an upwards slash, launching them into the air on hit. This variant is only comboable if either Light Mode or Brilliant Bone Blades is active.
  • Heavy (ASBH.png): He reappears directly behind the opponent without attacking. Kars can act almost immediately after he reappears, making this a great tool for catching the opponent off guard if used correctly. It is especially good as an anti-zoning tool if timed properly.

This skill does more damage if Kars is in Light Mode or if Brilliant Bone Blades is active.

Kars slyly licks his arm Lightblade before unleashing a large, shining array of slashes done in a single movement of his arm. If they successfully hit, Kars then dives forward to slash past the opponent in a samurai-esque fashion before bringing his arm down. After a short delay, the opponent suffers a final, gashing blow.
While Brilliant Bone Blades (install) is active, Kars may perform his HHA regardless of how much of the Heart Heat Gauge he has left. It will also cause it to do more damage. Light Mode being active also results in a damage increase.

Kars, the Ultimate Thing, is born!

Kars dons the Stone Mask in combination with the Red Stone of Aja to attempt to turn into the Ultimate Thing. From the ground, he will begin to slowly rise to his feet. If the animation fully plays out uninterrupted by the opponent, the mask shatters, and Kars gains a completely new array of moves.
This GHA is one of the longest and most difficult ones to fully activate, taking roughly 5 seconds to complete. As such, certain characters can make it nigh-impossible to successfully transform.

Predator Wings

Kars sprouts wings and takes flight, slowly depleting the HH gauge for as long as he stays in the air. If he hits the opponent while jumping forward or straight-up, they will take damage and be launched into the air. Kars will not hit the opponent if he jumps backward. While flying, Kars gains improved mobility and has access to several attacks. Kars will continue flying until he either lands, inputs ASBS.png, completely depletes the HH gauge, or performs three aerial attacks. If Kars activates this move while he has no Heart Heat, he will still perform a Super Jump, but he will not transition into a flying state. (Comboable)
Because Kars's grounded normals can be canceled into this special, it makes for a great way to transition a grounded combo into an aerial one.

Aerial Dash

Kars quickly rushes forward or backwards with a flap of his wings. The forward dash can collide with the opponent, acting as a reliable anti-air that can possibly be comboed off of. As long as Kars has Heart Heat, he will start flying after he dashes. If he has no Heart Heat, he will fall to the ground after the dash.

Aerial Chain Beat

While in mid-air, Kars can chain his aerial normal attacks together in order of increasing power, much like any other character could on the ground. This ability synergizes with "Predator Wings", allowing Kars to freely continue aerial combos from his Super Jump.
Brilliant Bone Blades

Kars charges forward and attacks with his Bone Blade in one fell swoop, launching the opponent on hit. This move is a command normal that can chain into Kars's other skills. (Comboable)

Kars launches projectile attacks from his body. This skill can also be used while in flight, and the resulting attack differs based on button input.
  • Light (ASBL.png): He moves forward slightly and fires off a volley of his hardened feathers straight forward. If used in the air, Kars will move backward slightly instead of forward. (Flash Cancel comboable)
  • Medium (ASBM.png): He jumps backward and launches a piranha that quickly arcs downward. If used in the air, Kars will instead move backwards slightly instead of up and back. If the piranha hits the opponent, they will crumple to the ground. (Comboable)
  • Heavy (ASBH.png): He sics a squirrel created from his hand on his opponent. When used on the ground, Kars will toss the squirrel a small distance in front of him, while in the air, he will drop it directly down to the ground. The squirrel will chase and home in on the opponent. If it hits, it will launch the opponent into the air and cause a hard knockdown. (Flash Cancel comboable)

  • Medium (ASBM.png): Kars slides a distance forward while performing a downward elbow strike, knocking the opponent to the ground in a soft knockdown.
  • Heavy (ASBH.png): Kars dashes forward to unleash a powerful body blow, knocking the opponent to the ground in a hard knockdown.

The range of the tentacle, number of hits, and therefore damage, as well as the distance the opponent is pulled towards Kars increases in ASBL.pngASBM.pngASBH.png order, but the greater the increase, the longer the recovery. This skill can cancel into "Predator Wings".

A two-stock assist. Kars lands in and utilizes light to disappear, reappearing above the opponent with a foot blade extended in a dive kick that bounces them off the ground if connected. He then poses before jumping back off-screen.

A one-stock assist. Kars jumps into the opponent, slashing downward at them with his arm blade to knock them away. He then poses before jumping back off-screen.

The hitbox of this attack is bigger than it was in All-Star Battle and now extends farther downward, making it appear as if Kars's knee is also part of the attack.
Jumping Medium Attack

The hitbox of this attack is bigger than it was in All-Star Battle and now extends farther backward. This results in Kars's other leg now being included in it, which makes it much better for crossups.
Jumping Heavy Attack

The hitbox of this attack is bigger than it was in All-Star Battle and now extends farther forward. This allows for better crossups as the attack can be used much later in Kars's jump arc and still connect. This attack now also deals more damage when Light Mode is active. Similarly, when "Brilliant Bone Blades" is active, this move will deal more damage now instead of becoming Unblockable.

Light Mode

While active, this mode will no longer drain the Heart Heat Gauge. Instead, it prevents Kars from building Heart Heat while guarding, attacking, or being hit. This also means that Kars does not require Heart Heat to activate the mode. It also no longer turns skills that use Kars's bone blades into Unblockable attacks. Additionally, when Kars is knocked down, the mode will be forcibly deactivated now.
Brilliant Bone Blades

This install no longer uses the HH gauge as a timer. Instead, the install will be active until Kars is either knocked down or he uses his HHA. Kars's attacks that utilize his bone blades also are no longer Unblockable; they instead add more hits, and therefore damage. When Kars uses his HHA during this mode, it will cost him no Heart Heat instead of emptying the rest of his HH gauge, regardless of the number of stocks he has. Additionally, the translation for the name of this install has changed. Previously it was "Shining Sabres" instead of "Brilliant Bone Blades".

This command normal now launches the opponent into the air and deals much more damage.

When the ASBL.png version of this skill hits, Kars no longer passes onto the other side of the opponent to knock them into the air. Because of this, the animation is now different. Instead of swinging his arm into the air after he dashes forward, Kars instead follows through on his swing and spins around back into a standing position. The ASBM.png version shares this animation as well, while the ASBH.png only uses it when the attack misses. If the ASBM.png version is used up close to the opponent, the first and second hits will not naturally combo into each other, allowing the opponent to block it if they cross their block properly. The ASBL.png and ASBM.png variants also now knock the opponent away from Kars instead of straight into the air when hitting an aerial opponent.

When using the ASBM.png and ASBH.png versions, Kars now moves forward a small distance. The last hit now also launches the opponent into the air. Furthermore, the recovery on all versions of the skill is much shorter than it was in All-Star Battle.

Kars moves farther forward than he did in All-Star Battle for all variants. Also, the aerial version of the skill now does significantly more damage than the grounded version instead of being the same.

The attack's input has been changed. Formally, it was ASBDPad6.pngASBDPad3.pngASBDPad2.pngASBDPad1.pngASBDPad4.png in place of ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad2.png. All variants of the skill also have their own differences.
The ASBL.png variant of the skill can now be comboed off of without having to be in Light Mode.
The ASBM.png variant of this skill now has Kars teleport in front of the opponent rather than behind.
The ASBH.png variant now has Kars teleport directly behind the opponent rather than a distance away from them.
Heart Heat Attack / Great Heat Attack (HHA / GHA)
Brilliant Bone Blades

This HHA has a stronger pulling effect when it hits opponents that are farther away now. Additionally, the translation for the name of this HHA has changed. Previously it was "Shining Sabres" instead of "Brilliant Bone Blades".

This normal is now a two-hitting attack. Since it is the second hit that launches the opponent, it is now much easier to combo off of.

Predator Wings

The input for this ability is slightly different now. Instead of the first input only being ASBDPad2.png, it now also allows for ASBDPad1.png or ASBDPad3.png. Also, this special now has a hitbox and causes damage when Kars is jumping forward or straight up. If connected, it will launch the opponent into the air, making it a great way to turn a grounded combo into an aerial one. Additionally, if Kars runs out of Heart Heat while in the air, his flight will now be cancelled instead of continuing until something else cancels it. This also means that if Kars activates this special while he has no Heart Heat, it will instead act only as a Super Jump instead of transitioning him into a flying state.
Aerial Dash

The "Aerial Dash" and "Aerial Back Dash" specials from All-Star Battle have been combined into this single special. While they remain functionally the same, there are some small differences. Kars does not dash as far now, and it deals significantly less damage. It also now causes a soft knockdown after launching the opponent rather than a hard knockdown, which means that if it connects on an aerial opponent, it is now possible to combo off of. Because Kars can no longer fly if he has no Heart Heat, activating this move while he has no HH will no longer cause him to start flying after he dashes.
Brilliant Bone Blades

The opponent is not launched as far as they were in All-Star Battle. They are also launched at a slightly higher angle, which allows for the ASBH.png version of "The power of supreme genes!" to combo off of this command normal now. However, the ASBM.png version of the same skill can no longer be comboed into, though that is due to changes to that version of the skill rather than this attack. The skill has also lost its ability to be Flash Canceled. Additionally, the translation for the name of this command normal has changed. Previously it was "Shining Sabres" instead of "Brilliant Bone Blades".

Each variant of the skill has changes.
  • Light (ASBL.png): Kars does not move as far forward when shooting his feathers as he did in All-Star Battle.
  • Medium (ASBM.png): Kars now jumps backward before shooting the piranha, leading to the piranha being shot later than it was in All-Star Battle and the arc of the shot being different. The distance it travels is ultimately the same though. If the piranha connects, the opponent will now crumple to the ground, making it so this variant no longer needs to be Flash Canceled to combo off of. It also means that if it connects on an aerial opponent, the opponent will now be knocked to the ground in a hard knockdown instead of recovering out of the hit.
  • Heavy (ASBH.png): If the squirrel hits after it touches the ground, all hits of the squirrel are now Lows instead of the last one being a Middle. If the squirrel hits while it's falling to the ground, all hits after the first are now Lows instead of Middles. The first hit also now launches the opponent.

  • Heavy (ASBH.png): Instead of being launched on hit, this variant now causes a hard knockdown, meaning that this variant can no longer be comboed off of. It deals more damage now though. Also, Kars does not move as far forward.

Furthermore, the ASBL.png and ASBM.png variants execute significantly faster than they did in All-Star Battle.

Commemorative Giveaway

In commemoration of the release of Stroheim as the 2nd paid DLC character for ASBR, the Japanese ASBR Twitter account hosted a giveaway of 20 sets of 3 ASBR Battle Tendency badges,[5] although only to be delivered to addresses in Japan.[6] The badges in question contain the ASBR render images of Rudol von Stroheim, Joseph Joestar, and Kars respectively.

The campaign started on February 3, 2023, and lasted until February 19 at 11:59pm JST. To enter the giveaway lottery, users only had to:

  1. Follow the @jojo_games_jp Twitter account.
  2. Retweet the tweet that announced the giveaway in the first place.

However, Twitter accounts set to private were illegible for the giveaway. Unfollowing the ASBR Twitter account before the end of the giveaway also deemed users illegible. Furthermore, attempting to join the giveaway with multiple accounts would have caused all of those accounts to lose their eligiblity to win.[6]

The giveaway was directly implemented by Bandai Namco themselves, with no third party involvement, and the winners of the giveaway were notified via Twitter DMs. Said winners are planned to be announced sometime in early March, 2023.[6]
