Josuke Higashikata (東方 定助, Higashikata Jōsuke) was confirmed to return for All-Star Battle R during the game's initial announcement trailer.[1]
His moveset is fundamentally the same as his from All-Star Battle, with a few tweaks being made to both balance the character and fit him into the overall gameplay tweaks that All-Star Battle R brought.
As Josuke's voice actor since All-Star Battle, Mitsuaki Madono reprises his role in All-Star Battle R as well. As with the majority of the game's roster, voicelines for Josuke were either added or re-recorded.
Josuke has 1000 health and uses the Stand (スタンド, Sutando) Battle Style, fighting foes with Soft & Wet. As Jojolion was not complete at the time of All-Star Battle's release, and All-Star Battle R did not update his moveset to reflect its completion, Josuke can only use moves from his appearance in the first few chapters of JoJolion.
Josuke moves forward slightly and attacks with his knee. If it hits an aerial opponent, it will cause a soft knockdown.

Attack type: Low Damage: 28
Rumble Mode (ゴゴゴモード, Gogogo Mōdo)
Activates when under 30% health
This mode is automatically activated once Josuke falls below 30% health. It increases his attack power, as well as the rate at which the Heart Heat Gauge rises, while also decreasing the rate at which the Guard Gauge drops.
Skills [Stand Off] (コマンド技)
So slippery!
+ // ON GROUND
Josuke has Soft & Wet remove his own friction as he slides forward and begins spinning around on the floor while curled up, hitting the opponent multiple times. The distance Josuke moves and the number of hits, and therefore damage, increases in order, but so does the recovery. A follow-up skill can be used before Josuke recovers. (Flash Cancel comboable) The version is safe on block.
Josuke stops spinning and slides forward to unleash a double kick that knocks the opponent into the air. They'll suffer a hard knockdown when they hit the ground. The distance Josuke slides forward increases in order, but the greater the increase, the longer the recovery. Josuke is especially low to the ground while performing this skill, letting him evade most attacks. (Flash Cancel comboable)
Attack type: Low Damage: 20 × 2 (40)
Let me take that from you.
+ // ON GROUND
Josuke releases a small cluster of projectile bubbles from his hand which float straight forward before popping. The attack button inputted determines the size of the cluster and thus the amount of hits and damage inflicted, but the greater the increase, the longer the recovery. Each bubble is a separate hit, which gives the attack sufficient combo utility as opponents can be easily juggled with this skill. (Comboable at certain distances)
Josuke slides a forward distance in a low stance and delivers a potent straight punch, leaving the opponent crumpling. The attack button inputted determines his travel distance and damage, while inversely affecting recovery time. Due to his crouched posture while moving, this skill can allow him to move under high-flying projectiles and other similar attacks. (Comboable) The version is plus on block, meaning that the opponent cannot attack before Josuke if they block this skill.
Attack type: High Damage: 38 / 40 / 42
How to use the bubbles......
+ // ON GROUND
Josuke "shaves" his face by surrounding his body with a dense cluster of bubbles that then slowly float forward after a brief moment. The bubbles' speed decreases in order, but the greater the decrease, the faster the recovery. These bubbles cannot be reflected and steal a small portion of the opponent's HH gauge on contact. (Comboable) While this move is comboable, due to the long startup, it is best used when an opponent is knocked down as a means of forcing them to either block or Stylish Guard on wake-up rather than as a combo tool.
Attack type: High Damage: 60
Normals [Stand On] (通常技)

Don't try anything funny!
+ // ON GROUND
Josuke and Soft & Wet leap forward and fly through the air as S&W rapidly punches. Soft & Wet finishes the assault by reaching forward, grabbing the opponent and throwing them behind Josuke. Because the opponent is thrown behind Josuke, Josuke will end up on the opposite side of the opponent that he started the attack on. The distance Josuke and Soft & Wet travel increases in order, but the greater the increase, the longer the recovery. Since Josuke floats above the ground as he moves, he can move over grounded traps without triggering them. (Flash Cancel comboable)
Attack type: High Damage: 135
The hell is your problem?!
+ // ON GROUND
Josuke dashes backwards and into a low crouch as he sends out Soft & Wet to advance forward while punching. The last hit of the barrage will launch the opponent if connected. The distance Josuke jumps back and Soft & Wet moves forward increases in order, but the greater the increase, the greater the recovery. This skill can initiate Rush Mode, and is a Stand Rush skill that Josuke can disconnect from to freely act while it is executing. (Flash Cancel comboable)
Attack type: High Damage: 60
I gotta win this!
+ // ON GROUND
Soft & Wet moves forward and unleashes a powerful spinning side kick that launches the opponent into the air. The distance Soft & Wet moves before kicking increases in order, but the greater the increase, the longer the recovery. This is a Stand Rush skill that Josuke can disconnect from to freely act while it is executing. (Flash Cancel comboable)
Attack type: High Damage: 55
Throw (投げ技)
I've taken your friction.
2 ATK buttons near opponent or ( to back-throw) ON GROUND
Soft & Wet conjures a bubble that it uses to take the friction from the opponent's feet, causing them to slip and fall, before Josuke knees them in the face as they come down. If back-throwing the opponent, Soft & Wet will grab and drag them to the other side of Josuke before conjuring the bubble. The back-throw leaves the opponent at a farther distance from Josuke than the forward throw does.
Attack type: Throw Damage: 130
Heart Heat Attack / Great Heat Attack (HHA / GHA)
I can steal you vision.
+ 2 ATK Buttons
ON GROUND
Josuke throws out a fast-moving bubble created by Soft & Wet as a projectile. If it hits the opponent, the camera shifts to the opponent's point of view as the bubble floats up to their eyes and pops, instantly blackening the screen as it steals their vision and leaving them crumpling (recreating Josuke's self-defense against Joshu in the first chapter of JoJolion).
Since the HHA results in the opponent crumpling if they were on the ground when struck, Josuke can follow up on the attack if he Flash Cancels the recovery animation, marking it one of the only scarce few HHAs in the game that do not definitively end a combo on success, and the only one where the recovery can be Flash Canceled.
Attack type: High Damage: 190
Soft and wet
+ 3 ATK Buttons or
ON GROUND
Josuke pulls out a projectile bubble with homing capabilities from his Star Birthmark and flings it after a short delay. If it hits the opponent, their entire body's friction is taken, making them slip off their feet and onto the ground, where they lay completely vulnerable. Josuke calmly and confidently explains what's happened to them, before Soft & Wet flies in to deliver an uppercut that knocks them into the air. The Stand then unleashes an upwards barrage of punches, finishing with a powerful hook that sends the opponent spinning out.
Attack type: High Damage: 297 / 356 / 445 (depending on HH gauge)
Assist System (アシストシステム)
Assault Assist (アサルトアシスト, Asaruto Ashisuto)
ON GROUND
A two-stock assist. Josuke lands in and summons Soft & Wet to remove his friction as he slides forward and begins spinning around on the floor while curled up, hitting the opponent multiple times. He then dismisses his Stand, poses, and jumps back off-screen.
Attack type: Low (first hit) High (rest of hits) Damage: 30
Reversal Assist (リバーサルアシスト, Ribāsaru Ashisuto)
ON GROUND
A one-stock assist. Josuke and Soft & Wet jump into the opponent, with Soft & Wet knocking them away with a kick. Josuke then dismisses his Stand, poses, and jumps back off-screen.
Josuke moves forward a small distance during this attack now. When hitting an aerial opponent, the opponent will no longer recover in the air and will instead be knocked to the ground in a soft knockdown.
Standing Medium Attack
ON GROUND
Josuke moves forward a small distance during this attack now.
Crouching Heavy Attack
+ ON GROUND
This attack now hits twice instead of only once, though the damage remains the same since it has been redistributed across both hits. It also has more pushback on hit and block now than it did in All-Star Battle.
Style/Specials/Etc. [Stand Off] (スタイル/特殊技/その他)
Don't screw with me!
+ ON GROUND WHEN DOWNED
When Josuke steps forward in his animation, he now steps farther forward, so when he steps back after attacking, he will have moved forward slightly instead of stepping back to the same position he was before. Additionally, the translation for the name of this skill changed. Previously it was "Quite screwing around!" instead of "Don't screw with me!".
Skills [Stand Off] (コマンド技)
So slippery!
+ // ON GROUND
The attack does not last as long as it did in All-Star Battle. As a result, how Josuke moves during the attack has been altered. Now he does not slide forward while spinning across the ground; to compensate, Josuke now slides forward his full travel distance before he starts spinning. This culminates in Josuke moving less total distance with the version and more total distance with the and versions. Also, after the first hit, all the hits of this attack are now Highs instead of Lows since this move too easily allowed for unblockable situations with the addition of assists.
Let me take that from you.
+ // ON GROUND
The bubbles travel much faster than they did in All-Star Battle. Because the duration of the bubbles remains unchanged, this results in the bubbles also traveling farther now. The number of hits for all versions of the move has changed as well. It now matches the visuals rather than dealing more hits than there are bubbles on screen. The hits deal more damage now to compensate for the loss, resulting in the version's damage being unchanged while the and versions do slightly more.
Don't mess with me.
+ // ON GROUND
The attack has been sped up. The distance forward that Josuke slides has also increased.
How to use the bubbles......
+ // ON GROUND
The bubbles now move slowly forward rather than staying stationary. As such, they are considered non-reflectable projectiles now rather than a trap. This also makes it possible to combo off of this move, though the long start up makes it so this move is best used for other purposes. Furthermore, the bubbles also have a longer duration.
Normals [Stand On] (通常技)
Standing Medium Attack
ON GROUND
This attack is now a Low instead of a High. Josuke also moves forward a small distance during this attack now. Additionally, it has more pushback on hit and block now than it did in All-Star Battle.
Standing Heavy Attack
ON GROUND
Soft & Wet moves forward a farther distance when it attacks now, giving this attack more range. This attack also has less pushback on hit and block than it did in All-Star Battle.
Jumping Light Attack
IN AIR OK
The startup for this attack has been decreased, making it easier to hit grounded opponents now where as, in All-Star Battle, it was only possible to hit taller grounded opponents (the Pillar Men and the tallest human characters).
Jumping Medium Attack
IN AIR OK
This attack know knocks the opponent into the air instead of only dealing normal hitstun. However, when hitting an aerial opponent, the opponent will be knocked to the ground in a soft knockdown instead of recovering in the air.
Jumping Heavy Attack
IN AIR OK
This move executes slightly slower than it did in All-Star Battle, making it a bit more difficult to connect both punches on grounded opponents now. It is also no longer possible to connect one of the two punches while jumping up. Furthermore, when only one punch is connected, the damage dealt will always be the higher damage hit, where as, in All-Star Battle, it was the lesser damage hit. The damage if both punches connect remains unchanged though.
Skills [Stand On] (コマンド技)
Don't try anything funny!
+ // ON GROUND
This skill deals significantly more damage now. When hitting an aerial opponent, the full remaining duration of the skill will land instead of the opponent possibly dropping out like they could in All-Star Battle if they were hit early on in the barrage. Additionally, the translation for the name of this skill changed. Previously it was "Don't get any ideas!" instead of "Don't try anything funny!".
The hell is your problem?!
+ // ON GROUND
There is no longer a camera effect on the last hit of the attack.
I gotta win this!
+ // ON GROUND
The attack button inputted now determines how far away Soft & Wet moves before kicking instead of it staying stationary regardless of the button inputted. The angle the opponent is launched is also different. Now they are launched into the air at a higher angle rather than straight outwards, making this skill much easier to Flash Cancel combo off of. Additionally, this skill now causes a soft knockdown rather than a hard knockdown.
Heart Heat Attack / Great Heat Attack (HHA / GHA)
I can steal your vision.
