Prosciutto
Prosciutto (プロシュート, Puroshūto) is a tertiary antagonist featured in the fifth part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Vento Aureo, specifically the "Express Train to Florence" and "The Grateful Dead" story arcs.
Prosciutto is an assassin from La Squadra Esecuzioni, and alongside Pesci, battle Team Bucciarati inside a high-speed train to Florence. He is a Stand User and forcefully ages a whole train with his Stand, The Grateful Dead, to corner the protagonists.
Appearance
Prosciutto is a man of slim build, having short blond hair and keeping them braided into three short mats at the back of the head. His lower eyelashes are thicker than average, and his upper teeth are somewhat pronounced, being depicted with slight emphasis whenever he opens his mouth.
Prosciutto wears a dark two-piece suit with a spiderweb-like motif running along it, under which he wears a bright shirt. Prosciutto keeps a dark collar and a large stylized pendant around his neck.
Color Schemes
Personality
Prosciutto is a fairly serious man. He is shown to always be focused on his mission and adhering to La Squadra's motto of holding one's ground, even mortally wounded, to the letter. He puts this into practice and expects his underling(s) to also do the same. He doesn't tolerate any deviance of this attitude, especially when it's from his comrades and subordinates, and failing to adhere to the ideal such as in the case of Pesci on one occasion, would result in a brief beating being handed out as a reminder. Prosciutto is usually very composed, meeting any obstacle with cold efficiency, and carrying out his objectives without hesitation. The TV anime adaptation expands upon his severity, calling out Formaggio for botching an assassination attempt with an unneeded casualty and regularly shouting at Pesci for not showing a manly enough face.
Despite his serious and cold demeanor, he is also shown to have a somewhat caring side towards his comrades. As the superior of the assassin duo, Prosciutto frequently points out his fellow assassin Pesci's lack of confidence in his own abilities, and on multiple occasions tries to comfort and convince him of his own capabilities. This reliance is not unfounded, however, as Bruno Bucciarati determines from his battle with Pesci that Pesci's abilities are actually more dangerous than Prosciutto's. While he is severe, Prosciutto is also able to recognize the valor of his foes. Thus, although he chastises Bucciarati during their fight for an error in judgement, Prosciutto soon recognizes Bucciarati's resolve to sacrifice himself for his men and praises his ability as a capo.
He also possesses a strong will, as shown when he suffers near-fatal wounds from being caught in the train's wheels and uses the last of his determination to keep his Stand's ability in effect for as long as possible.
Abilities
Stand
Prosciutto uses his Stand, The Grateful Dead, to age people in a large area, discriminating between individuals via near-negligible differences in their body temperature.
History
Background
Prosciutto was a member of La Squadra Esecuzioni, a team of nine assassins working within Passione. However, the team was frustrated they only received compensation for each kills while the rest of the gang was getting rich from the drug trade. One day their teammates Sorbet and Gelato disappeared while they were trying to investigate the Boss's past. They found Gelato choked on a gag in his house, with a piece of paper on which was written the word "punishment". Later, the team received the sectioned body parts of Sorbet encased in formaldehyde, showing the team the power of the Boss. They despaired of ever finding about the Boss. However, they then heard about Trish Una, and thought that she would be the key to discovering the Boss's Stand ability. The team rebelled and began searching for her. Just after Trish was taken in by Pericolo, La Squadra Esecuzioni ransacked Donatella and Trish's apartment in search for clues, missing a crucial picture of Donatella that was taken by the Boss himself.
The anime adaptation expands on his activities. The night Sorbet and Gelato disappeared, he was on an assignment with Melone, Pesci and Formaggio. Formaggio's method resulted in an unnecessary kill of the target's date and he called Formaggio out on this.
Vento Aureo
At Naples train station, Prosciutto and Pesci find Bucciarati looking around on the platform. While Pesci expresses a wish to avenge his fallen comrades, Prosciutto chastises his junior for expressing empty threats and tells him that such words should only enter his mind after he's murdered his targets. Prosciutto and Pesci split to corner Bucciarati; Prosciutto walks on the platform while Pesci walks in the train to cover all possible ways of approach. Bucciarati grabs something and rushes inside the train, but Prosciutto loses his trace and Pesci has not seen anything out of the usual. Moreover, it seems only the driver is in the cabin. Unbeknownst to them, the team is hiding in a turtle named Coco Jumbo. Unbeknownst to Prosciutto, Trish and her bodyguards are now inside the boss's turtle, Coco Jumbo, whose Stand, Mr.President, creates a room inside its shell.
In order to flush the gang out, Prosciutto decides to use his Stand, The Grateful Dead, to age everyone on-board the train and then goes into hiding. This forces Guido Mista to emerge from the turtle to try and stop the aging. As Mista confronts Pesci, Prosciutto disguises himself as an old man and prevents Pesci from flying by grabbing him. When Mista is about to shoot Pesci, Prosciutto also distracts the gunman and then reveals himself, rapidly aging him and taking him out. Prosciutto reverts himself and yells at Pesci for the second time, scolding him for his cowardice. Showing him what a real hitman ought to be, Prosciutto takes Mista's gun and shoots him three times in the head.
Recalling that Pesci has detected a suspect life form in the driver's cabin, Prosciutto decides to check inside of it. Pesci express self-doubt but Prosciutto reassures him and tells him that he must have confidence in his Stand. Pesci mentions that he was about to check under the seat and the duo does see recent droppings. Prosciutto breaks through the machinery and discovers Coco Jumbo. However, Bucciarati ambushes him from above the ceiling and Prosciutto is forced into a close-range fistfight. At first, Sticky Fingers proves itself more powerful. When Bucciarati positions himself to kick Pesci, Prosciutto attacks, thinking that the capo has made a bad move, but Bucciarati splits his head to avoid The Grateful Dead's fist and counter-attacks. However, Bucciarati is exerting himself and thus his body temperature rises. Thanks to The Grateful Dead, Prosciutto gains a physical advantage over Bucciarati, but the capo then grabs Prosciutto and throws himself off of the fast-moving train.
Prosciutto is nonetheless saved by Pesci's Beach Boy, which manages to hook his hand. Bruno has grabbed hold of Prosciutto's leg. Prosciutto changes his mind and compliments Bucciarati on his skill and valor, but nonetheless tries to kick him out. Bucciarati is aged and throws both of Sticky Fingers' fists at Prosciutto. However, The Grateful Dead deflects them into Beach Boy's line, as Bucciarati predicted, and the damage is directed towards the assassin. Prosciutto's hand is zipped out; he thus lands into the machinery of the train and is heavily injured, but true to his word maintains The Grateful Dead. Encouraged by his example, Pesci carries on the fight.
Agonizing, Prosciutto witnesses Pesci and Bucciarati's battle and uses the distraction to call Melone and inform him of their location. He finally dies from his wounds soon after.

- “I'm gonna ransack this place! They must be in here somewhere! Besides, this isn't a big deal, is it? We got tourist flights crashing every year anyway. Those are far worse than what's about to happen here!”—Prosciutto, Chapter 488: The Grateful Dead, Part 1
- “I'm angry at your spiritual weakness, Pesci. I can't blame you for getting shaken up when they shot up your ice! You'd start aging too, after all! (Even I agree that was a tough spot there.) But! If it were anyone else on our team, they wouldn't dispel their Stand when it was so close to grabbing the enemy by the throat! - “I'm gonna say it straight. Our team! We're nothing like those fools trying to pick up girls on the street or partying at the club. Video Games
GioGio's Bizarre Adventure (PS2)
Prosciutto appears in GioGio's Bizarre Adventure during Chapter 5-1 of Super Story Mode as the main enemy, and during Chapter 5-2 as one of only two supporting enemies in the game (the other being Cioccolata in Chapter 10-1). Though Prosciutto can attack normally, all of his special attacks require Grateful Dead to be active; as a matter of fact, Prosciutto cannot withdraw Grateful Dead unless a Stand Break is triggered. Throughout the fight, the player character's health will slowly drain as long as Grateful Dead is active, and the effect can only be deactivated via either triggering a Stand Break on Prosciutto or attacking the ice dispenser in the stage. Grateful Dead can accelerate the aging process either by using more power, requiring it to stand still, or by grabbing the player directly.
In Chapter 5-2, a dying Prosciutto will activate Grateful Dead thirty seconds into the battle. Unlike in Chapter 5-1, Grateful Dead does not physically appear, and the only way to deactivate the effect is to Stand Shoot Prosciutto, putting him out of commission permanently.

Eyes of Heaven (PS3/PS4)
Prosciutto and The Grateful Dead appear as the first stage hazard in the "Naples Train Station" stage, wandering around the center area. When he appears, all fighters will be slowed to a walk and unable to dash or dodge due to his aging ability. Both he and his Stand have a health bar and will disappear from the battlefield if beaten. The only way for players to undo the aging effect is by either defeating Prosciutto or grabbing ice tray pick-ups scattered around the stage.
After Prosciutto is defeated, Pesci will take his place.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R
Prosciutto was accidentally revealed to be in All-Star Battle R early through a screenshot posted to the game's official website on the day the game was announced, showing his name and part of his HUD portrait among an Arcade Mode list. He was officially announced as playable combined with Pesci as a single character on August 24, 2022 during the game's Part 5 Reveal Trailer.
Command List
This section requires expansion.
While a Stand User, Prosciutto and Pesci's Style is listed as "Bro and Mammoni". Though he functions similarly to other Stand Users by summoning or dismissing The Grateful Dead, Prosciutto's Style in Stand OFF revolves around commanding Pesci to attack with Beach Boy, assisting him in battle; Summoning The Grateful Dead dismisses Pesci and causes him to retreat. As part of this distinction, Prosciutto is unable to utilize Stand Style-specific abilities such as Stand Rush and Quick Stand ON.
Prosciutto can summon or dismiss The Grateful Dead, altering his available abilities.
While in Stand OFF, Pesci with Beach Boy becomes active to aide Prosciutto. Skills involving him can only be performed if he is in a ready position (i.e. behind Prosciutto). As he acts separately, Pesci will continue performing his skills even if Prosciutto is attacked; Inversely, he himself can be struck by the opponent directly to interrupt his moves, even if Prosciutto isn't hit.
Exclusive to Prosciutto is a three-meter gauge that determines how debilitated the opponent is by The Grateful Dead's accelerated aging ability. It is filled whenever Prosciutto lands abilities marked with a star (☆), mainly skills available in Stand ON. However, it depletes in various ways:
- The Aging Gauge will passively drain on its own at a steady rate. It will drain slower while the opponent is moving or attacking. If the gauge runs out, it will immediately reset to Lv 0, rather than drop 1 level.
- The Aging Gauge will drop by 1 level if Prosciutto is successfully knocked down.
- The Aging Gauge will immediately be reset to Lv 0 if Prosciutto is struck by a GHA.
The Aging Gauge begins at "Lv 0", and eventually progresses all the way to Lv 3, or "Lv MAX". Each level inflicts an additional status ailment on the opponent.
- Lv 1: The opponent loses the ability to Stylish Evade and Stylish Guard.
- Lv 2: The opponent loses the ability to jump (and Super Jump for applicable characters).
- Lv MAX: The opponent loses the ability to back dash, forward dash, and run.
With the opponent knocked down, Prosciutto repeatedly kicks them, launching them back off the ground a distance away and landing in a ground bounce. Should the opponent recover in time, this is still a low attack that cannot be blocked standing. Despite being a command normal, Prosciutto cannot chain skills from this attack. (Comboable)
The Grateful Dead delivers and overhand punch that strikes the ground, leaving the opponent crumpling on-hit. This is a middle attack that cannot be blocked crouching, and can also strike a downed opponent.
Prosciutto orders Pesci to cast Beach Boy forward in a quick motion. If it connects, the opponent is hooked and bound the fishing line, temporarily stunned. The attack button inputted determines how far Beach Boy's line is cast, inversely affecting Prosciutto's recovery speed afterward. This skill cannot be Flash-Canceled, but has two possible follow-ups; The opponent will simply recover standing if no further action is taken.
Prosciutto follows up by karate chopping Beach Boy's fishing line. This causes the force of the chop to travel up the line and into the opponent, damaging and sending them reeling onto the ground. The attack button inputted determines the strength and damage of the chop.
Pesci follows up by forcefully yanking the opponent high into the air and towards Prosciutto, dealing no damage. (Comboable)
Prosciutto orders Pesci to launch Beach Boy's line at an upwards angle as an anti-air attack, striking the opponent multiple times and sending them flying. The attack button inputted determines the dealt damage as well as the launching power of the attack, inversely affecting Prosciutto's recovery speed afterward; If Light () is inputted, the opponent is knocked back a large distance, while if Heavy () is inputted, they are barely lifted off the ground. (Flash Cancel comboable)
Prosciutto orders Pesci to cast Beach Boy's line onto the ground, leaving the hook bobbing in the floor as a trap. If the opponent comes in contact with the hook, they'll be left crumpling and open to attack. The attack button inputted determines how far Beach Boy's line is cast, inversely affecting Prosciutto's recovery speed afterward.
As long as the inputted button is held down, Beach Boy's hook will remain bobbing indefinitely, regardless of how far Pesci moves from it; Prosciutto is still allowed free movement and action, although he cannot perform any skills, leaving him with only normal attacks using the other buttons. (Comboable)
Prosciutto orders Pesci to sweep Beach Boy's line across the ground horizontally in a low attack that cannot be blocked standing. If the opponent is struck, they are knocked into the air and towards Prosciutto. The attack button inputted determines the skill's launching power and Prosciutto's recovery speed afterward, inversely affecting the attack start-up length. (Flash Cancel comboable)
If Heavy () is inputted, the opponent is knocked high enough into the air that Prosciutto can recover in time to continue attacking without the need for Flash Cancel. (Comboable)
Prosciutto lifts his arm up in a guard shortly before The Grateful Dead lifts off the ground and unleashes a barrage of punches. Prosciutto and it begin slowly advancing forward during the barrage, and the final punch sends the opponent flying on the final hit. This skill functions as a reversal and initiates a Guard Point effect before executing, allowing Prosciutto to absorb incoming strike attacks with no damage taken and retaliate in a single motion.
The Grateful Dead emits its aging mist in a radial burst across the ground in a low attack that cannot be blocked standing. If the opponent is caught, they are staggered and take no damage but will have the Aging Gauge increase by 1 level. This skill can also strike a downed opponent, allowing Prosciutto to inflict additional Aging on them even after they've hit the ground. The attack button inputted determines the size and range of the mist, inversely affecting the skill's start-up length and Prosciutto's recovery speed afterward. (Flash Cancel comboable)
The Grateful Dead moves forward and jabs its arm upwards. If it strikes the opponent, it will lift them up off the ground by their abdomen as it channels it aging power directly into them, increasing the Aging Gauge increase by 1 level, before slamming them into the ground.
Prosciutto lifts the opponent up by their collar with one hand and slaps their face back and forth with the other, before delivering a final slap to knock them away.
A counter. Prosciutto goads his opponent towards himself by sticking his arm out. If struck by a non-GHA melee strike, he'll suddenly parry the opponent's attack with said arm, then uses the opening to summon The Grateful Dead who forcibly seizes them by the face. Lifting them up, The Grateful Dead focuses its power directly into their body, instantly filling the Aging Gauge to Lv MAX.
Since this HHA results in the opponent being bounced off the ground, Prosciutto can follow up on the attack if quick enough, marking it one of few HHA in the game that do not definitively end a combo on success.
Prosciutto gives Pesci the cue to attack in full force, prompting him to lunge forward and cast Beach Boy's line with all of his might. This attack can even strike a downed opponent.
If it connects, Pesci begins a relentless assault with his Stand, its hook rapidly attacking the opponent by passing through multiple areas of their body as they're slowly strung up by the line. With one forceful yank, Pesci reels the opponent in and launches them flying at high speed towards Prosciutto, who summons The Grateful Dead to intercept with a powerful overhand punch to instantly knock them to the ground. Prosciutto moves to stand over the opponent, slowly pulls out Mista's revolver while stating La Squadra Esecuzioni's modus operandi, and finishes the attack by discharging three gunshots directly into their head.
This GHA deals a relatively high amount of Guard damage, allowing it to more readily break through the opponent's Guard and connect even if they successfully block it.
Novels
JORGE JOESTAR
In the light novel JORGE JOESTAR, an iteration of Prosciutto lives in the 37th universe, named Prosciutto Cappano (プロシュート・ケッパーノ, Puroshūto Keppāno). Prosciutto appears similarly to his original universe counterpart and is a member of Passione. He is not actually mentioned in the novel by name but he is drawn in the illustrations and named in the captions.
Prosciutto Cappano has a Stand named Twister, which appears similar to The Grateful Dead but its abilities are unknown.
Nero Nero Island, where the base of Passione is located, suddenly grows legs and starts moving through the ocean headed toward Morioh. Some ordinary citizens panic and attempt to escape at the island's harbor. Prosciutto, Cioccolata 37, Secco 37, Pesci 37, Ghiaccio 37, and Melone 37 ambush and murder them. Secco's Evil Dead conceals the harbor, making their actions invisible to those within the island, such as Bruno Bucciarati 37. One man manages to escape and tries waving desperately toward Morioh for help before he is killed as well.
The Mafia members move the bodies out of sight by dropping the bodies in the water between the boats, or by tossing them into the tall grass by the side of the road to the harbor. Nero Nero Island suddenly crashes into the barrier surrounding Morioh and flips upward. Its propulsion causes it to tear through the barrier and lands into Morioh Harbor.
Cioccolata and the others start firing bullets and rocket launchers at random civilians and houses in Morioh, attempting to shoot Jorge Joestar as well when he runs by underneath them. The mafia members then jump off the island and head to Budogaoka gymnasium with several weapons.[3]

Trivia
- In a 2019 interview with VIZ Media, Hirohiko Araki stated that his favorite character from the Hitman Team is Prosciutto. He enjoys Prosciutto's brotherly banter with his junior, Pesci. He also thought it was fun how Prosciutto's Stand accelerated aging.[4]
