Lord DIO never trusts anyone. I've come to make sure you never speak...ever again. And as for you four over there, I'll be taking your lives as well.
—Steely Dan, Chapter 160: Lovers, Part 1

Steely Dan (鋼入りの(スティーリー)ダン, Sutīrī Dan) is a tertiary antagonist featured in the third part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Stardust Crusaders, specifically the "Lovers" story arc.

Steely Dan is a mercenary working for DIO sent to assassinate Enya the Hag and eliminate the Crusaders in Pakistan. A Stand user wielding the microscopic Lovers, he holds Joseph hostage as the Crusaders figure out a way to defeat him.

Appearance

Steely Dan is a well built man of average height, with shoulder length hair that frays out at the back and multiple irises with a ripple pattern on his eyes. He wears an open collar shirt extending below his waist with the sides split, resemebling a loincloth on the front and back. The sleeves of Steely Dan's shirt along with his pants are dark.

Before revealing himself, Steely Dan dons a thobe and keffiyeh to fool Joseph into thinking he was a simple kebab vendor.

Personality

You don't need raw power to kill someone, do you understand, gentlemen?
—Steely Dan, Chapter 162: Lovers, Part 3

Steely Dan exhibits a particularly cruel, petty and cowardly personality.

Steely Dan using Jotaro Kujo as a bridge

Steely Dan is overly confident in his Stand's ability, revealing himself to the Crusaders after murdering Enya and threatening to take them out one by one.[2] The Stand's microscopic nature lends him his cool demeanor and he takes advantage of his situation to torture Joseph[3] and subjugate Jotaro.[4] Whenever he doesn't get his way, Steely Dan becomes abrasive and cruel, taking out his anger in insults and petty punishments.[5]

He takes a great deal of joy out of cruelty, watching Enya as she brutally dies, while sitting and drinking tea. When he takes hostage of Joseph, he forces Jotaro to carry out his orders and torments him in a number of ways. He steals Jotaro's wallet, makes him position as a 'bridge' to walk on,[6] forces him to scratch his back and clean his shoes, all while repeatedly taunting him.[7] However, despite his seemingly overwhelming ability, he is shaken by Jotaro's threat to pay what he was owed.[8] This cowardly trait is brought to the forefront at the very end of the fight, where he pleads for forgiveness and begs Jotaro to let him go.[9]

Steely Dan has seemingly no moral standards, hurting children, and carrying hostages.[10] Jotaro notably refers to him as 'the lowest scum'.[11] He also scams Joseph out of money when disguised as a kebab vendor.[12]

History

Stardust Crusaders (1988)

Steely Dan appears

Steely Dan first appears as a Kebab salesman. When Joseph asks him how much do five kebabs cost, he tells Joseph that his price is 1,000 yen (or 120r rupees). They both haggle until they agree on a price of 425 yen, but Dan still comes out on top because he's tricked Joseph into spending 300 yen more than what he usually sells it for. Later Steely Dan confronts Jotaro Kujo and his friends in Pakistan. He first executes Enya to silence her with a flesh bud he implanted into her brain,[14] earning the rage of the four men at the time. Regardless, Steely Dan remains calm, mocking Jotaro by saying that he would not be able to touch him. However, Steely Dan is punched in the gut by Jotaro anyway, at which point Joseph Joestar also flies back. Steely Dan takes the opportunity to explain the abilities of his Stand and pays a child to hit his leg with a broomstick to prove his point.[15]

Steely Dan announces that he will kill Joseph if he is physically assaulted once more. Kakyoin and Polnareff would not take any chances of killing Steely Dan and Joseph. This enables him to force Jotaro to obey his whim, and he punches Jotaro and hits him with a rock. Subsequently, he forces Jotaro to follow him and involves him in a number of actions at his expense, taking his money, forcing him to use his body as a bridge for him to cross the ditch,[16] and wiping his shoes, among other actions. It is around this point that Steely Dan realizes that Polnareff and Kakyoin have shrunk their Stands to combat his.[17] However, shortly after Steely Dan steals an expensive bracelet and forces Jotaro to take the blame, he finds his head injured thanks to Hierophant Green's attacks, and is forced to remove his Stand from Joseph's brain.[18]

Paying his dues at the hands of Star Platinum

Upon realizing this, Steely Dan attempts to run away, but is abruptly stopped by Jotaro. Steely Dan then tries to buy time by sucking up to Jotaro and attempts to have his Stand enter Jotaro's ear. However, Jotaro had anticipated this and stops The Lovers with Star Platinum's precision, and subsequently uses it to crush his arm and leg. After Lovers is released, however, Steely Dan attempts to force it to enter the ear of a young girl nearby, but now it is stopped by Hierophant Green who had gotten a tentacle on Lovers that ties it up and pulls it away. Shortly after, Jotaro pays back Steely Dan for his previous actions, using Star Platinum to barrage him and send him flying into a nearby building.[19]

The group travels to Karachi. An enemy Stand, Lovers, infiltrates Joseph's body, forcing Kakyoin and Polnareff to shrink their own Stands and fight it from the inside. The fight against Lovers takes the form of a sidescrolling shooting game. Silver Chariot can be used to directly attack obstacles in all directions, while Hierophant Green can shoot Emerald Splash in front of itself and use its tentacles to draw shapes that attack any obstacles within them. Power-ups that increase Chariot's range and the power of Hierophant's Emerald Splash can be obtained from defeated enemies. After the battle, Jotaro finds Lovers's user, Steely Dan. Steely Dan withdraws his Stand and begs for forgiveness, and Jotaro promises that if they meet again he'll be on the receiving end of a beatdown. As soon as Jotaro turns his back, however, Steely Dan pulls out a knife, only to find that he cannot move; Kakyoin has tied Hierophant's tentacle around Lovers, paralyzing it. Steely Dan offers Jotaro the down payment DIO hired him with, but Jotaro refuses the offer and delivers the promised beatdown, incapacitating him.

Trivia

  • Up until Cioccolata's beatdown in Vento Aureo, Steely Dan's beatdown had the longest in the series, consisting of three and a half pages.
  • Steely Dan's localized name was originally "Rubber Soul", after the Beatles album. However, because Rubber Soul was given to another Stand User, it was later changed to "Dan of Steel". This is a pun on the common nickname associated with Superman, "Man of Steel", as well as a literal translation the kanji of his name, "Hagane-iri no Dan" (鋼入りのダン).
