Chapter 238
The Mist of Emptiness, Vanilla Ice (1) (亜空の瘴気 ヴァニラ·アイス その①, Akū no Shōki Vanira Aisu Sono 1), originally Resolved to Die (死の覚悟, Shi no Kakugo) in the WSJ release, is the two hundred thirty-eighth chapter of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga. It is also the one hundred twenty-fifth chapter of Stardust Crusaders.
Summary
Telence T. D'Arby suffers Star Platinum's punches, flying away, before crashing a hole through what appeared to be sky. Surprised, Joseph concludes that their space is also a room in DIO's mansion; deciding to escape through the hole with Jotaro and Kakyoin.
A dark and icy atmosphere emanates from a door at the top of a staircase, where a man bows in a crouch, his fist to the ground. The man reports through the closed door that Telence has been defeated. A voice inside reflects that D'Arby was "a genius; he had a chance to win, but he lost"; asking the man he addresses as Vanilla Ice as to why he thinks that is, before inviting him in.
Vanilla Ice stands, excusing his entry. DIO, his face again in shadow, is shown reclining on a double bed, reading a large book. Lifting a full wine glass, he continues; suggesting that, foolishly, the group's strength is their perfect resolve to destroy him; their willingness to die for this cause, as piece with their destiny. DIO claims that D'Arby, lacking this resolve, cannot know why he lost.
DIO asks Vanilla Ice to observe his neck, suggesting that one more person's blood would heal his wound, before asking whether he would be willing to give him his blood. Vanilla Ice immediately obliges, summoning a monstrous, skeletal Stand, before sliding a nearby urn to his position, and with his Stand, severing his own head; when his blood leaks into the urn.
DIO sips his drink and stands up. Suggesting that he was only testing Vanilla Ice, DIO says that he can take blood elsewhere; slashing his wrist, in order to pour his blood into Vanilla Ice's neck and revive him. DIO affirms his confidence in Vanilla Ice's abilities, while, shocked, he awakens again, telling DIO that he will indeed kill the allied group.
Vanilla Ice's Stand consumes him head-first as DIO watches, before consuming itself, from its legs. Vanishing, a cloud of dust rises as a massive hole is punched in the nearby wall; when DIO complains that he could have used the door, and explains that Vanilla Ice's Stand "disappears completely from this dimension."
Outside, Avdol shares with Polnareff the status that the other group has by now been inside the mansion for over ten minutes.
