Super Action Statue
Super Action Statue (超像可動, Chō-zō Kadō), commonly abbreviated as SAS, is a line of collectible figures released by Medicos Entertainment. The line, which debuted in 2009, feature several points of articulation, allowing them to be displayed in various poses. Aside from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Medicos has also adopted a number of franchises in their Super Action Statue line. These include Tokyo Ghoul, Parasyte, RWBY, Drifters, Ajin: Demi-Human, Kinnikuman, and Fist of the North Star.
History
Medicos began releasing the Super Action Statue line of figures in 2009, with their first release being Star Platinum. From there, Parts began having characters released in a mostly sequential order, working through Stardust Crusaders, Diamond is Unbreakable, Vento Aureo, Stone Ocean, and Steel Ball Run, with Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, and JoJolion having figures released interstitially. Figures from The JOJOLands were first announced in 2024. Releases of new characters and colorways occurred near-monthly until around 2014; at this point, new figure and colorway releases became more scattered, with Medicos shifting attention to re-releasing older figures and releasing figures based on other series. Beginning in 2017 with the launch of Steel Ball Run's figures, most figures are now sold in advance at Japan's bi-annual Wonder Festival before later receiving a wider retail release. Around the same time, Medicos began revisiting and releasing figures of new characters from older parts.
The Super Action Statue line consists of articulated figures, made of PVC, ABS, and nylon. Every figure includes a base, figure stand, and swappable hands, with many also including swappable heads, accessories, and text plates. Several figures released first or exclusively at Wonder Festival feature exclusive colorways, accessories, and text plates. The Super Action Statue line has inconsistent scaling among different parts of the series. For instance, characters from Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency tend to be larger compared to those from later parts such as Stone Ocean and Steel Ball Run. However, Stardust Crusaders and Diamond is Unbreakable, which were the first parts given figures, do not scale accurately with the figures from the first two parts. This results in characters from the earlier parts appearing smaller than they should in relation to characters from later parts. Additionally, characters from those parts given figures later on, such as Hol Horse, have their proportions aligned with the original scales of their respective parts, rather than conforming to the overall scale of the line. Super Action Statue are on average between 15-17cm. The palettes used for the figures are personally approved by Hirohiko Araki.
Over time, Medicos has expanded the Super Action Statue line to include Super Action Statue BIG, Super Action Statue Crystal, and Super Action Statue Clear. Super Action Statue BIG is a separate line introduced in 2018 which recreates past figures in a larger scale, increasing them from ~16cm to ~24cm. Super Action Statue Crystal figures are past figures, encrusted in lab-grown stones (formerly by Swarovski), and released in limited quantities. Super Action Statue Clear figures are translucent releases of past figures, released in extremely limited quantities; only two figures have ever been given Clear releases.
Packaging
The packaging for Super Action Statue figures has largely remained the same ever since its debut in 2009, with the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure line only receiving a visual overhaul in 2020. The front of each box features a box window, the line's Japanese and English logos, the series logo, and the figure's name. Recent re-releases of characters with names that contain music references frequently feature abbreviations or shortened versions of names on the box, such as "Stone Free" being changed to "S・F", or "Whitesnake" being changed to "Ws". The sides of the box feature example poses for the figure, surrounded by an ornate border. The back of the boxes similarly feature poses and ornate borders, as well as pictures of accessories included with the figure, and a description of the character. For the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, the boxes initially featured a black harlequin pattern, with the borders on the side and back of the box varying between figures. In 2020, new releases and re-releases began replacing the original design, updating them with an art–deco-inspired design.
The boxes for the Baoh Super Action Statue releases do not feature the harlequin pattern. Boxes for Crystal variants come in a black velvet box, with all relevant logos and text embossed in gold.
