Today, tomorrow, whenever, I'll wait patiently for my chance. Then, I'll kill you and your hot mom!
—Anjuro Katagiri, Chapter 271: Josuke Higashikata! Meets Angelo, Part 3

Anjuro Katagiri (片桐 安十郎, Katagiri Anjūrō), better known as Angelo (アンジェロ, Anjero), is a secondary antagonist featured in the fourth part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Diamond is Unbreakable, specifically in the "Josuke Higashikata! Meets Angelo" story arc.

Angelo is an infamous, cold-blooded criminal from the town of Morioh. Turned into a Stand user by Keicho Nijimura, Jotaro Kujo is prompted to alert Josuke Higashikata of his presence. A chance encounter soon leads the two into battle with Angelo and his water-based Stand, Aqua Necklace.

Appearance

Anjuro Appearance.png

Angelo is a tall, well-built man. He has short, spiky hair and prominent, hairless, sharply angled brows. He wears a milkman uniform consisting of overalls, a long sleeve shirt, simple shoes with laces and no socks, and a baseball cap during his assault on the Higashikata household. The overalls and cap bear the logo of Lucky Land Milk. During flashbacks, he wears a simple prison uniform of a short-sleeve collared shirt and pants.

Personality

Angelo is one of Japan's most corrupt, degenerate criminals. He has committed countless crimes, including robbery, kidnapping, ransom, and rape, since he was 12 years old. He is especially sexually depraved, having committed rape at 12 years old and raping two 14-year-old boys later on.[6] Evidently, Angelo feels no remorse for any of his crimes, even admitting that he is a damned soul.[7] To him, committing crimes, especially with his Stand, is a fun pastime.[6][8] People that interrupt his plans infuriate him, so he naturally tries to kill them.[6][4]

With an IQ of 160,[2] Angelo demonstrates immense guile. He is adept at using Aqua Necklace, able to work around its weaknesses upon learning them. In addition, he is able to predict what his opponents will do and proceed accordingly.[7] He is even sly enough to turn on as many sources of water, both liquid and gaseous, as possible in the Higashikata household without being noticed.[3] His intelligence is combined with a surprising level of patience. He will wait as long as is necessary for an advantage such as rain to arise.[3] Once he decides on a goal, he becomes absolutely determined and will do whatever he must to succeed.

Not adhering to society's standards, he also has his own odd set of standards, particularly having a hatred for people he perceives as arrogant.[4] In this, he finds joy. Seeing the arrogant fall into despair is one of his favorite things to witness.[5] Another source of joy for Angelo is when his predictions end up correct. He describes these moments as pure bliss and laughter-inducing.[7]

When cornered, Angelo becomes somewhat cowardly and will try to sway his attacker through emotions.[7] However, he remains cunning and will attempt to save his life however he can, such as taking anyone available hostage.[8]

History

Background

Angelo has a history of crime

Anjuro Katagiri was born in 1964 in Morioh. At the age of 12, he was convicted for robbery and rape after being arrested by Ryohei Higashikata and was sent to a juvenile prison.[5] Since then, he was in and out of prisons all across Japan, constantly repeating his crimes. He eventually became known as the most depraved criminal in Japan, with the newspapers giving him the nickname "Angelo". In March 1994, Angelo encountered three 14-year-old-boys. He raped two of them, killed them, and stole everything they had. When he was about to kill the third teenager, he realized the boy was the only child of wealthy parents and kidnapped the boy instead so he could demand ransom. Despite pretending to have the boy hostage, he already killed him, cut off his genitalia, and nailed them to a post by his body. When he went to pick up the ransom, the police were there waiting for him. Angelo murdered one of the officers with his knife before he was captured and sentenced to death.[6]

In September 1998, half a month before his scheduled execution in October, Angelo couldn't sleep one night thinking about how he could steal a centerfold from a skin magazine that an inmate in the cell next to him managed to smuggle over. Suddenly, he felt someone watching him, which ended up being Keicho Nijimura. Keicho instantly shot him with the Bow and Arrow, awakening his Stand. Keicho told him about DIO, Stands, and that he'll be in Morioh if Angelo wanted to meet him again.[8] He was hanged in October, but he mysteriously survived his sentence, not dying despite being swung in the noose for 20 minutes. He escaped from prison the following week.[6] Once out of prison, Angelo goes on a killing spree, murdering seven people by getting them to drink his watery Stand before using it to cause their heads to be torn apart from within, as well as possessing people's bodies to commit crimes. All of the corpses had internal damage to their eyes and ears.[5]

Diamond is Unbreakable

Angelo attacks the Higashikata's house

Angelo was detected by Hermit Purple as a man representing danger to Josuke Higashikata. In March 1999,[10] Angelo met Josuke after his plan to use an ordinary man to commit a robbery was foiled by Josuke. As an act of vengeance against Josuke and Ryohei, Angelo tricked and killed Ryohei, planning to do the same to Josuke before assaulting his mother. Angelo waited until a rainy day came to get an advantage over Jotaro and Josuke in Josuke's home.

Angelo's final fate

He was eventually defeated and smashed to pieces by Crazy Diamond's fists into a rock. Josuke then restored him and the rock at the same time, fusing them. Angelo then tried to take a child as a hostage with his stand, but insulted Josuke's hair and, as a result, Josuke fused him even further with the rock, effectively turning Angelo into a hideous statue that becomes a historical landmark for Morioh. Josuke eventually waved to Angelo when passing by the rock, a habit which Koichi Hirose also developed to imitate Josuke.

Spin-Offs

Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan

Rohan Kishibe passes by Angelo Rock, which now seems to have a playground built near it.[11]

Crazy Heartbreakers

The information below derives from a source not written by Araki. As such, it may or may not be considered canon.

After being arrested by Ryohei, the assignment of an incompetent lawyer to the case resulted in Angelo receiving a lenient punishment, merely confined to a juvenile correctional facility. Since he immediately continued committing the same crimes and more upon release, Ryohei's noteworthy accomplishment appeared to hold diminished significance.[12]

Trivia

Rock on the Zuihoji Temple grounds in Sendai
  • A forest around the Zuihoji Temple in Sendai has a rock that bears a striking resemblance to Anjuro after he's turned into a rock by Josuke Higashikata. Despite this, Araki has mentioned that the rock was based off of one found in Matsushima.[13]
