Mizuo (水尾)^[a] is a primary character featured in the one-shot At a Confessional, the 16th episode of Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan. He is only named in the live-action film.

Mizuo is a loyal servant of Tamiya. The two undergo plastic surgery to switch around their faces, which Mizuo finds out too late was part of Tamiya's ploy to trick a vengeful spirit haunting him.

Appearance

Mizuo is a middle aged man with short hair and a mustache. At some point, he has plastic surgery along with his master, and assumes his master's identity: a young man with an average build and short, light hair, with four long spikes of hair protruding from the front. After being decapitated by Sotoba, he carries his head around as a vengeful spirit, exposing a gaping hole inside his neck.

Personality

Mizuo was so loyal to his master, Tamiya, that he would undergo plastic surgery to swap faces without knowing his master's true intentions. Along with this odd degree of loyalty, Mizuo possesses a great amount of courage when Sotoba's vengeful spirit eventually manifests. He demonstrates quick wit and determination, to the point that he is willing to set his own arms ablaze.

When he returns as a spirit, Mizuo yearns for revenge against Tamiya, holding a grudge for his deceit.

History

Mizuo was loyal to a rich man with great prosperity named Tamiya. He was willing to do anything for him, and, at his master's request, used plastic surgery to alter their appearance. Mizuo was unaware at the time that their plastic surgery was actually his master's plan to fool the spirit of Sotoba, a vagrant that cursed him in death.

Sotoba's spirit attacked Mizuo thinking he was his master, but gave him the chance to be spared: if he managed to throw a piece of popcorn in the air above a nearby lamppost and catch it in his mouth three times in a row, the vagrant would accept his death and leave him alone. If Mizuo failed, the vagrant would immediately kill the man and declare his grudge justified.

Mizuo succeeded in catching the popcorn the first time, but a flock of pigeons attempted to grab the popcorn on the second toss. To distract them, Mizuo ripped open the bag of popcorn, letting the popcorn spill on the floor. Mizuo's trick worked and allowed him to catch the popcorn, but the pigeons now surrounded him. To scare the birds away from his third toss, Mizuo lit the popcorn on fire before tossing it into the air. Although Mizuo seemed to have won the bet, the sun came out from behind the clouds as the popcorn fell, making Mizuo unable to see the flame. The popcorn landed on Mizuo's shoulder, and he was immediately decapitated by Sotoba.

When Tamiya visits a confessional to confess his sins, Mizuo's spirit appears before him. Now holding a grudge against his former master, Mizuo swears to come for him in his daughter's happiness moment. However, he is advised by Sotoba's spirit to watch over Tamiya at all times, in order to ensure he never fools the two of them again.
