Personality
Personality
George is kind, though somewhat misguided. The most apparent example is when he mistakenly believes Dario Brando saved his life, though the latter was actually attempting to rob him of his possessions. Even when George understands this to some extent, he shows his generosity by claiming that he willingly gave his ring to Dario and easily gets him out of jail. Nevertheless, George still honors Dario by taking in his child and doesn't notice Dio's wrongdoings. Once he does notice, he accuses Dario for Dio's behavior.
George Joestar I is a man of the upper class, a true British ‘noble’ who raises both of his sons to the highest standard of etiquette and manners expected of their household. He was exceptionally harsh towards Jonathan as a child for his ‘boorish’ attitude and lack of grace compared to Dio. Despite George’s overbearingly strict nature he loved his sons equally. In his old age George prides both of his boys on their upbringing and academic success.

While George is disconnected from the pains of the impoverished, he is exceptionally generous and forgiving. This is seen as naïveté by some but George empathizes with Dario Brando’s circumstances and gives away his wife’s ring for Brando to sell. Much later, when Dio stabs him in the back, George blames himself for not raising Dio like Jonathan and asks Jonathan to bury him in the family grave. Speedwagon states that George’s steadfast will, pride and kindness were inherited by Jonathan after his death.

George hangs the Stone Mask on a wall in his mansion as a memento to his late wife, Mary.
George loves his son, but is strict towards him, especially after Dio came along which offered George someone to compare Jonathan with, as he wished to make a gentleman out of him. Although he uses physical punishment and food deprivation to punish Jonathan, they are more a reflection of his time's customs than his own character. He notably shows his fatherly love through taking a fatal knife stab instead of Jonathan.

Background
Background
In the 1860s, George and his fiancée Mary have a pair of rings made by a famous jeweler for their engagement. The couple have a son named Jonathan Joestar on April 4, 1868. Shortly after Jonathan's birth, the family goes on a trip where George comes across the Stone Mask in the possession of an art dealer in London. George takes a liking to it and Mary buys it for him.
A man of the upper class, George was famous in the trading business, making his family rich and able to live in a luxurious mansion. He later married a girl named Mary Joestar and they had a son, Jonathan Joestar.

In 1868, on the way back from their trip, the carriage crashed, and Mary lost her life while George was knocked unconscious. When he woke up, he was met with the face of a passerby named Dario Brando. Assuming Dario dragged him out of the crash, he promised to repay him for saving his life. George would later be called up by a London inspector about his wife’s missing ring. It is revealed to George that his savior years ago was arrested for trying to pawn Mary’s ring. Taken aback by Dario, he empathized with his circumstances and informed the inspector that the ring was a gift. Calmly, he hands the ring back to Dario and urged him to build a different life by selling it.

George hanged up the Stone Mask in his home as a memento to his late wife. For the next twelve years, George would raise his only son, Jonathan. He brought a dog named Danny for Jonathan at some point.
George tragically loses his wife Mary in a carriage accident in 1868. When the thieving Dario Brando arrives at the scene to loot the valuables nearby, George wakes up and assumes that Dario rescued him and feels indebted to him. Later, George meets with Dario again but in prison. Dario has been arrested for trying to pawn a ring that has been identified as a property of the late Mary. However, George decides to lie to the police to save Dario from the death penalty and tells the inspector in charge of the case that he gave the ring to Dario. He then hands the ring to Dario, telling him that he understands the reason for the theft and to become a good family man. Even Dario cannot understand George's generous nature as he provides him with money for a hotel venture that ultimately fails.

For the next twelve years, George raised his only son Jonathan who grew into a fine youth despite being rough around the edges. He got Jonathan a pet dog, Danny, who saved Jonathan from drowning and became his best friend.
When Dario Brando passes away, George receives a letter from the man asking him to take in his son, Dio, if he was to succumb to a sudden illness. George honors his wishes by allowing Dio to live at the Joestar Mansion as a member of the family. George often chastised Jonathan for failing to match his adoptive brother’s etiquette and intelligence. Unbeknownst to Joestar were Dio’s plans and treatment of Jonathan. The two converse some time after Dio's adoption about the Stone Mask and later Jonathan’s attachment to Danny. Soon after, he catches both boys fighting and sends them to their rooms for punishment. Danny is subsequently found trapped in the incinerator and buried. George believes a burglar was responsible for the dog's death, leaving only Jonathan to suspect Dio.
After receiving a letter from a dying Dario, George honors his "debt" by allowing Dario's son Dio Brando to live at the Joestar Mansion and accepts him unconditionally as a member of the family. During Dio's stay, George is impressed by Dio's superior manners and intelligence, which causes him to berate his own son Jonathan several times. However, George remains unaware that Dio is brutalizing his son.

After Dio forcefully kisses Jonathan's girlfriend Erina Pendleton, George and him have a conservation about Jonathan's dog, Danny. George thus narrates Danny and Jonathan's story together, how they didn't like each other at first but that then Danny saved Jonathan from drowning in a river, starting their friendship. When Jonathan learns about Erina, he rushes to the Joestar mansion and fights Dio, winning the struggle through sheer will. Jonathan manages to reduce Dio to tears for the first time. Unaware to both Jonathan and Dio, George catches them fighting (not noticing the knife Dio planned to stab Jonathan with) and sends them both to their rooms, promising punishments for the both of them after.
Seven years later, George is struck ill and remains bedridden. While recovering, he is treated by the mansion's staff and occasionally Dio, who'd discreetly swap his medicine for poison. Jonathan discovers Dario's letter and begins to question his intentions. He travels to Ogre Street for proof and an antidote. Returning with both, George makes a successful recovery and discovers Dio's scheme. Constables are brought in to apprehend Dio, as well as the poison's merchant, Wang Chan, to expose him. Feeling responsible for his fate, George returns to his rest to avoid watching Dio's arrest. On the steps to his bedroom, he overhears Wang Chan explaining Dio's 'impenetrable luck' and panics. Dio suddenly pulls out a knife in an attempt to stab his brother, but George leaps between the two in time. George peacefully dies nestled in Jonathan's hold, pleading to blame him for Dio's upbringing. George's body is later burned away in the fire that destroys the Joestar Mansion.

Legacy
Dio then traps Danny in an incinerator, causing the dog to be burned alive. George and the other members of the house don't suspect Dio of the crime, believing it to instead be a burglar. Nethertheless, Jonathan suspects Dio was responsible but has no proof.
According to Speedwagon, George Joestar's spirit was inherited by Jonathan and his death serves as Jonathan's animus to vanquish Dio's evil.

Novels
Eight years later, George is struck ill. Jonathan discovers Dario's letter from which he learns that his father is probably being poisoned by Dio. Jonathan travels to Ogre Street for proof and to find a cure. George is then cured and learns of Dio's treachery. Feeling responsible for doting Dio, George stands by as the constables Jonathan has brought proceed to arrest Dio. At the last moment, as Jonathan goes to Dio to personally handcuff him, George overhears Wang Chan mentioning Dio's luck and worries that the arrestation is going too smoothly.

Original Universe
In the light novel JORGE JOESTAR, Erina names her son after George but spells it in the Spanish style ("Jorge") so she can call him "JoJo". In the past, George used to be friends with the grandfather of Steven, Kenton, and Darlington Motorize.

37th Universe
When Dio attempts to stab Jonathan to use the Stone Mask on himself, George leaps between the two and shields his son, getting fatally stabbed in the back. George dies nestled in Jonathan's hold, cheering his son up saying that is best for a father to die in the arms of his son. George's body is later burned away from the fire that destroys the Joestar Mansion.
There is also an iteration of George in the 37th universe. Although he is English, he lives in America because England does not exist in this universe. He is still a wealthy man, owning a large estate in 1881 where he lives with his son Jonathan and adopted son Dio Brando. It is unknown whether the George in this universe dies before his sons, as Jonathan and Dio both die in a train accident when Jonathan attempts to stop Dio from robbing the train.

Personality

George Joestar I is a stern father

George Joestar I is a man of the upper class, a true British ‘noble’ who raises both of his sons to the highest standard of etiquette and manners expected of their household. He was exceptionally harsh towards Jonathan as a child for his ‘boorish’ attitude and lack of grace compared to Dio.[3] Despite George’s overbearingly strict nature he loved his sons equally. In his old age George prides both of his boys on their upbringing and academic success.[4]

Speedwagon states that George’s steadfast will, pride and kindness were inherited by Jonathan after his death.[5]

George hangs the Stone Mask on a wall in his mansion as a memento to his late wife, Mary.[6]

History

Background

In the 1860s, George and his fiancée Mary have a pair of rings made by a famous jeweler for their engagement.[7] The couple have a son named Jonathan Joestar on April 4, 1868.[8] Shortly after Jonathan's birth, the family goes on a trip where George comes across the Stone Mask in the possession of an art dealer in London. George takes a liking to it[9] and Mary buys it for him.[10]

Phantom Blood

George Joestar mistaking Dario Brando for a rescuer

In 1868, on the way back from their trip, the carriage crashed, and Mary lost her life while George was knocked unconscious. When he woke up, he was met with the face of a passerby named Dario Brando. Assuming Dario dragged him out of the crash, he promised to repay him for saving his life.[11] George would later be called up by a London inspector about his wife’s missing ring. It is revealed to George that his savior years ago was arrested for trying to pawn Mary’s ring. Taken aback by Dario, he empathized with his circumstances and informed the inspector that the ring was a gift. Calmly, he hands the ring back to Dario and urged him to build a different life by selling it.[12]

George hanged up the Stone Mask in his home as a memento to his late wife. For the next twelve years, George would raise his only son, Jonathan. He brought a dog named Danny for Jonathan at some point.

Berating Jonathan for his lack of manners

When Dario Brando passes away, George receives a letter from the man asking him to take in his son, Dio, if he was to succumb to a sudden illness. George honors his wishes by allowing Dio to live at the Joestar Mansion as a member of the family. George often chastised Jonathan for failing to match his adoptive brother’s etiquette and intelligence. Unbeknownst to Joestar were Dio’s plans and treatment of Jonathan. The two converse some time after Dio's adoption about the Stone Mask[13] and later Jonathan’s attachment to Danny[14]. Soon after, he catches both boys fighting and sends them to their rooms for punishment. Danny is subsequently found trapped in the incinerator and buried. George believes a burglar was responsible for the dog's death, leaving only Jonathan to suspect Dio.[15]

George Joestar's death

Seven years later, George is struck ill and remains bedridden. While recovering, he is treated by the mansion's staff and occasionally Dio, who'd discreetly swap his medicine for poison. Jonathan discovers Dario's letter and begins to question his intentions. [16] He travels to Ogre Street for proof and an antidote. [17] George peacefully dies nestled in Jonathan's hold, pleading to blame him for Dio's upbringing.[18] George's body is later burned away in the fire that destroys the Joestar Mansion.[19]

Legacy

According to Speedwagon, George Joestar's spirit was inherited by Jonathan[20] and his death serves as Jonathan's animus to vanquish Dio's evil.[21][22]

Novels

JORGE JOESTAR

The information below derives from a source not written by Araki. As such, it may or may not be considered canon.

Original Universe

Dio, George, and Jonathan in the 37th universe

In the light novel JORGE JOESTAR, Erina names her son after George but spells it in the Spanish style ("Jorge") so she can call him "JoJo".[23] In the past, George used to be friends with the grandfather of Steven, Kenton, and Darlington Motorize.[24]

37th Universe

There is also an iteration of George in the 37th universe. Although he is English, he lives in America because England does not exist in this universe. He is still a wealthy man, owning a large estate in 1881 where he lives with his son Jonathan and adopted son Dio Brando. It is unknown whether the George in this universe dies before his sons, as Jonathan and Dio both die in a train accident when Jonathan attempts to stop Dio from robbing the train.[25]
