Araki & Film

It is common knowledge that Hirohiko Araki is an avid music lover. His love for it is seen throughout all of his works in many references and also discussed many times in comments and interviews. It is without a doubt one of the most well known aspects of his works which has been looked over extensively. However, Araki's avid love for movies is not something that is as extensively brought up in comparison. As a lover of movies, it is somewhat disappointing due to the many influences they've also had on his works (he's also literally written two books just about movies). Whether it's simply a mention of a title or it influenced the very making of a character, movies and their impact on him have been around since his very beginning.
This is why I'm attempting to make a comprehensive list of really everything (figuratively) with movies and Araki. The list of the movies that I've made is present --> here. This page simply acts as a breakdown of the specific sources of where some of these movies might have popped up in.
Structure
The list itself is a combination of multiple lists and specific titles from various works/sources, including sources not by/with Araki. Another key point is that all the movies have been either directly mentioned/stated or are obvious in its reference.[a]

Listed below are movies that have been referenced by their name either as a name used on something or as source of a title.
Mentioned by Name
Listed below are movies that have been directly mentioned by characters or have been mentioned in character profiles.
- Polnareff's favorite movie is The Bad News Bears.[21]
- When trying to explain how to ride a camel to the group, Joseph mentions his "knowledge" of riding camels comes from him having seen Lawrence of Arabia three times, which he also mentions he may have slept during two of those times.[22]
- Avdol's favorite movie is Midnight Run.[23]
- Jotaro asks Joseph who was the lead actress of the movie Tarzan, the Ape Man as one of the questions to confirm he hasn't become possessed by DIO.[24]
*Jotaro's favorite movie is Never Cry Wolf.[20]

Araki's Participation
Listed below are times when Araki himself discussed a movie in a review/comment, had a partial role in the promotion for a movie itself, or his own part in the making of one.
- Araki wrote a comment and drew an illustration of Neo and Jolyne in promotion of the soon release of The Matrix Reloaded at the time.
- Araki discussed the movie Spider-Man 2 in an interview he had with Sam Raimi.[39]
- Araki drew illustrations of the cast of The Prestige for the Japanese premiere.[40]
- Araki discussed the movie The Golden Compass in an interview he had with Chris Weitz.[41]
- Araki reviewed the movie Taken and drew an illustration of the characters from it.[42]
- Araki wrote a comment for the movie Cry Macho for its Japanese release.[43]
- With the movie adaptions of his works done throughout the years (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable - Chapter 1, and Rohan au Louvre), he seems to be overall lax in their productions beside supervision and to answers questions if needed (similar to his role in the anime). According to Takashi Miike[c], Araki himself told him "Every movie belongs to its director. Feel free to destroy the original universe".
- However, Araki did contribute directly for that movie with drawing the camouflage pattern shown on Bad Company's soldiers.
Miscellaneous
- Joseph's favorite actor is Jean Gabin.[44]
- Kakyoin's favorite actor is Masakazu Tamura.[45]
- Joseph correctly answers "Bo Derek" when asked by Jotaro who was the lead actress of Tarzan, the Ape Man.[46]
- Atroe's favorite actor is Johnny Depp.[32]
- When asked what directors influenced him, Naokatsu Tsuda stated he was influenced by American movie directors including Ridley Scott, Guillermo del Toro, and Stephen Spielberg.[47]
- When asked if he wanted to make a visit to America, Araki answered that if he could eat good food and meet Benicio del Toro, he'd liked to go.[48]
- Masanori Shino has stated that Ermes Costello was the most difficult for him to draw and how it took him some time to figure out how to her draw her braided locks, which he compared to the dreadlocks of the Predators.[49]
- In Hirohiko Araki's Manga Techniques - Continued, Araki praises the movie Joker for its portrayal of evil with Arthur Fleck.[50]
- According to Reki Taki, when Scrooged was released in Japan in December 1988, Araki took his assistants to see it at the theater. Since it was after work, all the senior assistants had already gone home, so it was just Taki and a new assistant that went.[51]
Araki's Comments/Notes
- In the comment for Chapter 19, he mentions that Stephen King's Stand by Me was great and that he'd like to produce something like it some day.[53]
*In the comment for Chapter 9, he mentions he hasn't been able to rewatch his favorite films lately due to being busy but definitely is going to rewatch David Cronenberg's The Fly.[52]
Notes
- ↑ For example: the way Pet Shop licked his blood is an obvious reference to "Enter the Dragon", while Johngalli A.'s sniper being inspired by the thin rifle used in "The Day of the Jackal" is possible but not confirmed as of yet.
- ↑ There is a sizable amount of movies missing from this list due to: Titles being completely covered, only partially shown, the partial text is too non-specific to narrow down, the title is too vauge even if fully shown, multiple movies have the same name and either could be the intended title based on year, or simply the movie is known but it's not even on Letterboxd at the moment.
- ↑ The director of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable - Chapter 1
- ↑ In total the movie won four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Film Editing.
- ↑ In America, this movie is referred to as "Hoboken Hollow"
- ↑ The movies out at the time were Twilight, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
- ↑ Should be stated the actresses in both movies are different and that in Smile at least, no one dies in the movie while laughing.
