In Japan, Manga Awards (漫画賞, Manga Shō) are presented to professional and newcomer manga artists for published/sumbmitted works. Throughout Hirohiko Araki's career as a manga artist, he has been one of the judges for several awards and his works have also received or been nominated for awards as well.

Summary

Manga awards have been routinely given out for several decades by numerous publishers and organizations, with the oldest being the Shogakukan Manga Award since 1955. These awards are either yearly or occur multiple times a year. Awards can vary to being split amongst multiple generic categories, specific genres, or for the quality of the work. Some awards can also go without a winner if the judges deem none of the works are deserving of a grand prize as opposed to the lesser prizes. Manga awards can be broadly grouped into those for the already published works of professional manga artists and those for works submitted by newcomers. Awards for newcomers can also have the benefit of having their works published/serialized in manga magazines and be judged by already successful manga artists such as Kohei Horikoshi, Eiichiro Oda, Takehiko Inoue, and Akira Toriyama.

Hirohiko Araki

At the beginning of Hirohiko Araki's career, he had submitted his work, The Bottle, to the 14th Tezuka Award (手塚賞, Tezuka Shō) using the pen name Toshi Arakino (荒木之 利, Arakino Toshi). [Further text]

General Review from Araki
