—Leone Abbacchio, Chapter 459: The Mystery of Soft Machine, Part 2

Moody Blues (ムーディー・ブルース, Mūdī Burūsu) is the Stand of Leone Abbacchio, featured in the fifth part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Vento Aureo.

It possesses the ability to imitate the form of individuals and reenact past events with precision.

Appearance

MoodyBluesAppearance.png

Moody Blues is a humanoid Stand of a height and build similar to Abbacchio's. It is clothed from its head to its knees in a semitransparent piece of medium shade, open between the base of its neck and its crotch (revealing a light surface), and which forms a tent between its head and its shoulders. Its body is made of vinyl.[2]

It has a depressed, digital timer on its forehead. Its eyes resemble the speakers of a cassette player, repeated on the sides of its shoulders, the back of its hands and on its knees.

In the anime, Moody Blues has a constant VHS static-like effect present over its body while active, with said effect becoming more pronounced when it uses its ability. Furthermore, when activated and when using its abilities, it emits sounds akin to both a landline telephone's dial-up tone and hang-up click, as well as the fast-forward and reverse winding of a VHS tape.

Abilities

Moody Blues Stand Rush

Moody Blues demonstrates a certain level of inherent strength, being able to perform basic rush attacks and outmatch other relatively weak Stands and their Users in direct combat, such as Illuso and his Man in the Mirror. However, its abilities do not lend themselves to fighting, which often leaves Abbacchio overpowered by other offense-based Stand users. Despite this, Moody Blues's esoteric power makes it useful for a number of outside tasks.

Chronological Rebroadcasting

Moody Blues turning into Narancia from five minutes ago

Moody Blues's primary ability is retrocognition; in particular, the ability to reenact, or "replay" past events with utmost precision, allowing Abbacchio to freely investigate events.[3] Every event happening to a particular location or person will be exactly recreated by Moody Blues, even if it is currently impossible; for instance, Moody Blues reenacting Narancia's past will produce music because Narancia listened to some, despite the lack of a working stereo.[3] However, there are limits to what Moody Blues can replay. For instance, Clash's teleportation through water is impossible to reenact.[4]

Fast-forwarding a replay

At the same time, the digital timer on Moody Blues's forehead will remain to indicate the point in time it is reenacting.[3] The "replay" can be controlled as if it was a video, allowing Abbacchio to fast-forward to skip uninteresting events, or pause it, allowing people to interact with the paused event if need be.[3][5] However, it cannot attack when it is "rebroadcasting", making it vulnerable.[5] The farther away the event is in the past, the more time Moody Blues must spend immobile to reach it. It had to remain defenseless for an estimated 8 to 10 minutes as it prepared to replay Diavolo's past meeting with Donatella Una on the beaches of Sardinia 15 years ago.[6] Once finished, however, it can again attack.

By using a replay, Moody Blues can imitate the form of an individual for a limited time. At one point, it enabled Abbacchio to pilot a plane by playing back the previous motions of the pilot.[7] The imitation effect of its ability can also be used to disguise Moody Blues, shown when it changed into Abbacchio in order to fool Illuso's Man in the Mirror into dragging it into its mirror world instead of Abbacchio himself.[8]

Games

GioGio's Bizarre Adventure

Moody Blues debuts as a playable Stand in GioGio's Bizarre Adventure.

Abbacchio himself can only attack with regular punches and kicks, as most of his special attacks involve his Stand. In Normal Mode, Abbacchio's Stand Shoot is unique in that Moody Blues briefly pauses before delivering the attack; in Stand Mode, Moody Blues's Stand Shoot causes it to mirror Abbacchio's movements, with the attack lasting longer if charged up beforehand. Moody Blues can also grab the enemy and, if the player performs enough button presses, perform a barrage of punches before letting go.

Moody Blues's special ability in Normal Mode allows it to record Abbacchio's movements over a period of ten seconds. During recording, Moody Blues will remain motionless and open to attack, and Abbacchio will be unable to use any moves that involve his Stand. The recording will be stopped if the move is used again, or if either Abbacchio or Moody Blues takes damage. Regardless of whether the recording is completed, using the same move in Stand Mode will cause Moody Blues to replay the recorded inputs, creating opportunities for combos. The recording will remain "saved" until either Abbacchio begins recording again or the fight ends. If the playback move is used before recording any input, Moody Blues will deliver a single kick before returning to Abbacchio.

All-Star Battle (PS3)

Moody Blues appears in the game accompanying Abbacchio as a menu guide. The game depicts him using Moody Blues whenever the player wishes to listen to the game's audio and soundtrack.

Eyes of Heaven (PS3/PS4)

In an interview with Hiroshi Matsuyama, it was stated that Abbacchio, and 119 other characters, were originally planned to be in the game. Apparently, Abbacchio made it into beta testing, but the team had trouble making Moody Blues's ability to replay his opponent's moves viable in-game.[9]
