For me, filmmaking combines everything. That’s the reason I’ve made cinema my life’s work. In films, painting and literature, theatre and music come together. But a film is still a film.

It is common knowledge that Hirohiko Araki is an avid music lover. His love for it is seen throughout all of his works in many references and also discussed many times in comments and interviews. It is without a doubt one of the most well known aspects of his works which has been looked over extensively. However, Araki's avid love for movies is not something that is as extensively brought up in comparison. As a lover of movies, it is somewhat disappointing due to the many influences they've also had on his works (he's also literally written two books just about movies). Whether it's simply a mention of a title or it influenced the very making of a character, movies and their impact on him have been around since his very beginning.

This is why I'm attempting to make a comprehensive list of really everything (figuratively) with movies and Araki. The list of the movies that I've made is present --> here. This page simply acts as a breakdown of the specific sources of where some of these movies might have popped up in.

Structure

The list itself is a combination of multiple lists and specific titles from various works/sources, including sources not by/with Araki. Another key point is that all the movies have been either directly mentioned/stated or are obvious in its reference.[a]

Notes

  1. For example: the way Pet Shop licked his blood is an obvious reference to "Enter the Dragon", while Johngalli A.'s sniper being inspired by the thin rifle used in "The Day of the Jackal" is possible but not confirmed as of yet.
  2. There is a sizable amount of movies missing from this list due to: Titles being completely covered, only partially shown, the partial text is too non-specific to narrow down, the title is too vauge even if fully shown, multiple movies have the same name and either could be the intended title based on year, or simply the movie is known but it's not even on Letterboxd at the moment.
  3. The director of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable - Chapter 1
  4. In total the movie won four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Film Editing.
  5. In America, this movie is referred to as "Hoboken Hollow"
