Chapter 53
'The Pillar Man' (「柱の男」, 'Hashira no Otoko'), originally "The Pillar Man" Resurrection Project (”柱の男”蘇生実験, "Hashira no Otoko" Sosei Jikken) in the WSJ release, is the fifty-third chapter of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga. It is also the ninth chapter of Battle Tendency.
Summary
Speedwagon, having attempted suicide in detainment, has been put in a straitjacket by the Nazis. Stroheim takes this as confirmation that Speedwagon knows something of value to their cause, and a shutter opens behind him, revealing the man in the pillar. The Nazis have secured it in a large room, prepare to interrogate Speedwagon with a truth serum. Stroheim then visits a cell where he knocks out a rebelling prisoner and asks the others to choose someone to sacrifice. One young boy courageously volunteers himself to save the other, but as a twisted reward for his bravery, Stroheim spares the boy and executes all the other prisoners.
Elsewhere, Joseph is riding a motorcycle through the Mexican desert, but stops at a nearby town. After accidentally drinking the water laid out for horses, he resorts to beating up a bunch of Mexican thugs and forces them to supply him with food and gasoline.
Back at the Nazi base, Stroheim brags about the security measures to contain the Man in the pillar while scientists pump blood into the stone column. Despite Speedwagon's warning, the Nazis continue until the man fully emerges out of the column. Joyful, Stroheim thus name the man Santana. Santana then suddenly trips and fall on the ground, provoking Stroheim's hilarity.
As an experiment, Stroheim sics a Vampire on Santana. Santana doesn't even protect himself from the Vampire, but somehow fully absorbs him into himself, demonstrating a speck of his capabilities.
