3rd Stage Goal: Cañon City (3rd.(サード)STAGE(ステージ) ゴール.キャノン・シティ, Sādo Sutēji Gōru. Kyanon Shiti), originally Cross the Lake (湖を越えろ, Mizūmi o Koero) in the UJ release, is the thirty second chapter of Steel Ball Run and the seven hundred eighty-fourth chapter of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga.

Summary

At the end of the Third STAGE, every major competitor is making a break for the finish line. They are given the choice of going around the lake, but Diego, then Gyro and Johnny choose to directly cross it. Gyro thinks that Diego will attack them with his newfound ability; however, Johnny tells him that Diego is more concerned with surpassing him than risk getting disqualified. He warns Gyro that Diego's dinosaur senses give him an edge for exploiting the landscape and more importantly, that Gyro doesn't have the will to win on par with the British jockey, which gives Diego the upperhand.

While the rest of the racers take two different routes around the lake, Gyro doesn't listen to Johnny, who ends up deciding to take a third route and ride around the lake, with Diego and Johnny closely following behind. The swim exhausts Valkyrie and the horse isn't able to catch up to Silver Bullet. In an attempt to shorten the distance between him and Diego, Gyro ditches his luggage, as well as some of his clothes, and uses the Spin to squeeze water out of his body in order to lessen the weight on the horse and thus gain more speed. However, Diego spits a gastrolith at the ground which rebounds and slightly wounds Valkyrie's leg. Another turnabout occurs when, at the last moment, Johnny passes both of them and the race finishes with Diego and Gyro behind him. However, the true winner of the race, Hot Pants, had already passed the finish line an hour ago. Gyro acknowledges his defeat and resolves to try to get the necessary will to win.
