Meanwhile, in New York City, Jonathan's grandson Joseph Joestar got his wallet stolen by a pickpocket named Smokey Brown before the youth was cornered by a pair of corrupt police officers. After the fat cop places his booger on Joseph's face in an attempt to peaceful defuse the situation by claiming the wallet was a gift to Smokey, Joseph by jabbing fat cop's finger in his nose while breaking the other's trigger finger with Ripple-propelled soda bottle cap. Once the fight ended, Joseph freaked out over what he did and fearing what "Granny Erina" will do to him if she finds out before he and Smokey take their leave. Joseph later introduces himself to Smokey, explaining all he knew to him about his inherit use of Ripple energy.
Joseph befriends Smokey as he and his grandmother Erina Joestar make the boy feel welcomed. While eating at a restaurant, Joseph dealt with a mafia henchman whose racist comments towards Smokey was too much for him and Erina to tolerate. After Erina gave him her permission as long as his fighter does not bother the other customers, Joseph proceeds to outwit and overwhelm the mobster his mind games. Soon after, Joseph is approached by another mobster who is an acquaintance of Speedwagon's and has come to inform him and Erina that Speedwagon has been murdered by Straizo. While Smokey advises Joseph not to be bought in by the mobster's words, Joseph explains there is some truth in it. However, Joseph knocks the mobster out for giving his grandmother grief as she is concerned that the evil that took away her beloved Jonathan is about to claim her grandson. Joseph assures her that he is not going anywhere, though he accepts whatever fate is in store for him.
