The Spin (回転, Kaiten), literally "rotation", is a supernatural phenomenon wielded by Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar and featured in Steel Ball Run.

It is a state of perfect or near-perfect rotation which produces an energy that can be applied for a multitude of uses. The Spin may be considered a counterpart to the Ripple power featured in the original timeline.

Description

The Spin is a state of rotation defined by its closeness to perfection, that perfection being the Golden Rectangle (黄金長方形, Ōgon Chōhōkei), more specifically the Golden Spiral that is derived from the Rectangle, a mathematically endless spiral and a feature said to be omnipresent in the surrounding nature and a fortiori in works of arts[1].

Unlike the average rotation, the Spin is persistent and produces more rotational energy[1] that it takes to create. That rotational energy can be wielded for a wide array of purposes.

Using the Spin

Because of its miraculous property, the Spin has been wielded as a technique by a chosen few at least since the Middle Ages[2] from which several specialized skills have been derived.

Users of the Spin typically try to spin objects to follow as best they can the Golden Rectangle, creating a near endless rotation that may create an infinite amount of rotational energy and then throw said objects at a target. To do so, they apply a small force causing the object to Spin near perfectly, giving it an impulse of energy to start the rotation and then let the rotation perpetuate itself. One advice given to neophytes is to visualize the perfect rotation and then trying to emulate it[3].To enhance the Spin, one must approach the Golden Rectangle, a rectangle with a ratio 16/9 that when recursively divided into a square and another golden rectangle, traces the path of a the Golden Spiral, a self-similar and thus endless spiral. Used as a scale, the Golden Rectangle allows the creation of a perfect rotation and thus an infinite amount of energy.

The Spin is somewhat easy to learn, as the novice Johnny manages to produce a conclusive Spin with a cork within a day of learning about the Spin[3]; however, it is extremely difficult to master. The Spin must be imbued into a medium that will keep on spinning and must be thrown so the object can transfer the energy through contact; thus, a Spin user must be able to expertly aim and throw objects in order to hope for a result. One must also know the human body extremely well to exploit the effects of the Spin on people to the fullest, for instance the Zeppeli Family are trained as surgeons to use the Spin on criminals on death row[4]; otherwise the Spin may only result in a simple enhancement of destructive energy. Others like the members of Naples' royal guard only use a highly specialized application of the Spin on the human body[5].

The Spin can be applied to a variety of objects, examples of miscellaneous items subjected to it being corks[3] or bullets[6] and on one occasion Gyro creates a spinning sphere of water[1], typically object on which there is an axis around which the object can rotate well although Tusk is a Stand linked to the Spin which uses Spin-imbued nails.

Yet, experts in the Spin like Gyro prefer special Steel Balls: steel spheres characteristic of a baseball or boule, which he calls and shows to be something near the perfect tool for applying and maintaining Spin. While the Zeppeli use a grooved version for maximum faithfulness in the Golden Rectangle, others like Wekapipo use special spheres embedded with smaller satellites to spread their zone of attack. Object that aren't perfectly sphere-shaped do not produce a perfect Spin and are thus subpar compared to the Steel Balls[1].

Johnny Joestar's Stand Tusk, developed with Gyro's mentoring, allows Johnny to spin his fingernails and toenails[7] to act as bullets. Unlike the Steel Balls, the nails possess more metaphysical properties.

Super Spin

The Super Spin represents the most faithful emulation of the golden spiral humanly possible.

Developed in the Middle Ages to bypass the shield and armor of the mounted knights, stirrup were invented to harness the power of a running horse. The horseman must let the horse run with the force of the Golden Rectangle, meaning to run at its most natural speed. At this perfect pace, the horse spontaneously creates the energy of the Spin; it can then be harness through the stirrups and pass through the legs, body, then shoulder, arm and wrist to empower further the throw of the Steel Ball. Thus a truly perfect rotation emitting an infinite amount of energy is created.[2][8][9]

Unlocking the Super Spin grants mastery over an infinite amount of energy, therefore, several miraculous feats are possible. First and foremost is that its wielder spontaneously develop a Stand or make them evolve. Gyro develops his Stand Ball Breaker[10] while Johnny develops Tusk ACT4[11]

Gyro's Ball Breaker and Johnny's Tusk ACT 4 appear to represent the infinite force of the Super Spin which trumps many powers. Both are notably capable of bypassing the interdimensional barriers that hide and protect Funny Valentine and his Stand D4C[10][12], and it is shown that Tusk ACT4 is impervious to an extent to The World's time stop ability[13].

Although almighty, the Super Spin is still incredibly difficult to start. One must not only have a healthy horse but also have the expertise to feel when it runs at its natural pace, in addition to the need of being proficient in the Spin and possess a projectile that can be imbued with the Super Spin. An imperfect thrown sphere will result in a failure[14] and any interference during the horsemounting like knocking an obstacle[9] or the horse being attacked will interrupt the process[11]. During the events of Steel Ball Run, only two people on Earth could reproduce the Super Spin.

Effects

Objects imbued with the Spin have a range of effects on humans, animals, or the environment. However, the energy of the Spin dissipates in the environment, requiring either direct contact or at least closeness to a source of rotational energy to be affected by it.

Interestingly, people are not able to feel whenever they are affected by the Spin. Johnny held a still spinning cork in his hand without realizing it[15] and during their final confrontation, Gyro was able to hit Valentine several times with the Super Spin and hide its effects, including the tearing off of an ear[8][16].

The Spin is used for a wide range of destructive, defensive, medical and utilitarian purposes depending on the available tool. Body manipulation with the Spin allows skin to be twisted so tight that it becomes bulletproof, entire limbs to be flattened, and on one occasion Gyro applies Spin to himself to wring water out of his body. The effect of Spin on muscle allows the user to contort, twist, and to a certain extent control the movement of others: during his introduction, Gyro wins a duel by manipulating his challenger's arm with a Steel Ball to the shoulder, causing the man's pistol-carrying arm to twist around until the man shoots himself in the head. While under the effect of Spin, muscles also seem to be able to contract more forcefully than they usually would be able to, as shown when Gyro hits Valkyrie's flank with a Steel Ball to initiate a sprint. In more destructive techniques, such as the ones employing Wrecking Balls, it has been shown that the Spin can cause temporary to permanent nerve damage, resulting in left-half ataxia.

This allows both for redirection of trauma (moving a wound from the hand to the leg) and damage (targeting a hostage with a Steel Ball, transferring the force and the applied Spin to their captor behind them). However, while Ripple attacks have been shown to transition through metal (see Metal Silver Overdrive) and stone walls (during Jonathan's fight with Jack the Ripper), only softer objects seem to be able to transfer the Spin. This is possibly due to how Ripple moves as arcs of energy in a medium, while Spin transfers through applying intrinsic rotational movement to the medium itself. During the battle with Sandman, it is revealed that Spin can also move through water, but its liquid nature ensures that the waves quickly dissipate. Trees and bark are susceptible to fine manipulation with the Spin (such as when Gyro creates an improvised rope during the battle against Dr. Ferdinand), but stone shatters.

Objects imbued with the Golden Rotation are shown to carry near-limitless energy, making for rather fearsome Spin-based attacks. Stands centered around Spin (such as Tusk or Ball Breaker) make use of this energy for supernatural purposes: Tusk ACT 2 and 3 is capable of spatial manipulation by moving a nail bullet hole using the Spin retained within it, and Ball Breaker uses the vast power of the Super Spin to simultaneously age cells in a target's body until the point of cell senescence.

The Spin has been long studied as a human anatomical corrective and medical treatment by the Napoletani Zeppeli Family, doctors renowned throughout Italy, although they are employed by their government as executioners, able as they are to effect clean, certain, and painless death.[17] While the medical application of Spin is only hinted to, its use is shown during preparation for an optical surgery.
