Fire and Ice, Jonathan and Dio (炎と氷 ジョナサンとディオ, Faiyā Ando Aisu Jonasan to Dio) is the tenth and final story arc in Phantom Blood.

Summary

Jonathan approaches Dio, planning to infuse his sword Luck and Pluck with the ripple to avoid being frozen. While Speedwagon, Straizo and Tonpetty are kept busy by Dio's Zombies, Jonathan and Dio take their fight to the balcony. Dio manages to freeze Jonathan's arm through the metal sword when he almost slices him in half, then both his legs. However Jonathan calcutated that much and the tip of the sword is reaching the flame of one of the balcony's torchs. The heat goes through the sword and unfreezes Jonathan's arm and Dio has to break Luck and Pluck. Nonetheless, when Jonathan punches him, he freeze Jonathan's arm again. The vampire then leaps toward Jonathan for a final attack but Jonathan envelops his hands in flames, preventing Dio from freezing them. Jonathan sends a Ripple into Dio's chest who is sent flying down the cliff below the balcony. Hoever Dio cuts off his head before the Ripple reach his brain and survives, picked up by Wang Chen. The party believes themselves completely victorious and subsequently destroys the Stone Mask.

Jonathan marries with Erina Pendleton in February the 2nd 1889, and the newlyweds go on a honeymoon on a cruise to the United States. Jonathan's joy is interrupted when he spots Wang Chen and follows him up to the coffin Dio used to sneak inside the boat. Dio explains that he respects Jonathan for defeating him, and plans to take over his body. Erina surprises the conversation and Dio then pierces Jonathan's throat with two streams of eyegoo. The boat is invaded by Zombies and Jonathan is helpless. Dio then orders Wang Chen to finish Jonathan off but Jonathan uses his last ripple to control Wang Chen and sabotage the boat's steam engine, causing the pressure to build up. Erina refuses to leave Jonathan's side, but he points toward a still living baby, imploring Erina to save herself and that baby. The engine explodes, killing the Zombies nearby and Jonathan manages to stab Dio's head and hold it while Erina seeks shelter in the armoured coffin. Dio tries to talk his way out, but then realizes that Jonathan has died. This is February the 7th, 1889. The whole boat explodes and sinks. Erina Joestar née Pendleton is the only survivor along with that baby she saved, and she thinks of the other baby she is pregnant with, saying that the baby will hear of Jonathan Joestar's bravery. Erina will be saved two days later, and a new era of adventures will begin.
