The Doll Without a Past (曰くのない人形, Iwaku no Nai Ningyō) is a short story that is part of an anthology of short stories based on the Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan series. It was written by Katsuie Shibata and published by Shueisha. "The Doll Without a Past" was included with the May 2024 issue of Ultra Jump. It was then compiled in a collection named Rohan Kishibe Does Not Laugh with three other stories, which released for sale on December 18, 2024.

Rohan encounters a doll that is devoid of a past.

Summary

During a research trip to Italy, Rohan buys a stolen wooden doll from Lucio Portelli (ルーチョ・ポルテッリ, Rūcho Porutteri) at the Porta Portese Market in Rome. A week later, the original owner Basilio Pistarino (バジリオ・ピスタリーノ, Bajirio Pisutarīno) visits Rohan in Morioh to ask for his doll back.

Notes

  • The volume version of the story changes a detail that was present in Short Stories booklet it originally released in. It claims that Rohan returns from Italy one week ago, but the countdown reads ‘29 days, 12 hours, 32 minutes’ placing his return three weeks earlier. This error (as well as all other subsequent mentions of Rohan returning to Morioh one month earlier instead of just one week earlier) was eventually corrected in the volume release of the story to ‘6 days, 12 hours, 32 minutes’ to correspond to the correct date of return.
