—Tattoo, Chapter 8: The Stone Mask, Part 1

Tattoo (刺青, Irezumi), as referred to by Speedwagon, is a tertiary ally featured in the first part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Phantom Blood. As a resident of Ogre Street, he initially tries to rob Jonathan Joestar alongside Speedwagon and Amato.

In the Phantom Blood musical, he is named Cronin (クローニン, Kurōnin).[1]

Appearance

Tattoo is a rugged-looking grown man with a medium-sized beard and unkempt hair. His wardrobe consists mainly of a fringed leather jacket, pants, and belt. His most noticeable feature, and the obvious source of his name, is a large tattoo stretching from cheek to cheek and from forehead to nose dorsum - the tattoo appears to be either a butterfly or a design similar to a Rorschach test image.

Personality

Not much is known about Tattoo's personality, but he is a rowdy, violent street thug. As a thief from the dangerous alley known as Ogre Street, Tattoo is known to attack strangers alongside his two friends. He is known for using a knife, and shows no remorse for maiming and dismembering his opponents.

History

Phantom Blood

Tattoo attacks Jonathan

Little is known about Tattoo, aside from his rowdy nature and acquaintanceship with fellow Ogre Street thug Robert E. O. Speedwagon. He is first introduced when he, along with Speedwagon and Amato, ambush Jonathan Joestar during his journey to find a cure for his father's illness. Speedwagon sends Tattoo to attack Jonathan first: attempting to stab Jonathan with his knife, he is surprised when Jonathan grabs the blade. Though he threatens to cut Jonathan's fingers off by pulling out the blade, Tattoo is knocked away by a quick punch from Jonathan.[2] After Speedwagon's defeat, Tattoo is shocked to discover that his injuries are minor, Jonathan having held back in consideration of his family.[3]

After Jonathan's battle with Dio at the Joestar Mansion, Speedwagon decides to visit Jonathan in the hospital, bringing Tattoo and Amato along for the ride. Out of concern for his friend's health, Tattoo suggests that Speedwagon relax due to his own injuries, a suggestion that Speedwagon rejects before falling face-first onto the ground.[4]

He and Amato join the rest of Jonathan's friends to see Jonathan and Erina off on their honeymoon to America.[5]

Eyes of Heaven (PS3/PS4)

Tattoo appears in the game as part of Speedwagon's moveset and exclusive Style, Ogre Street (食屍鬼街(オウガーストリート), Ougā Sutorīto). When utilized, Speedwagon will temporarily summon Tattoo and Amato, who will follow him until they are: ordered to attack, hit, or separated far enough from him.

Using the skill, Go nuts with those knives, boys!, Tattoo will attack Speedwagon's target and unleash an unblockable stab, but will also attack the nearest opponent if Speedwagon is not locked on to anybody.

Diamond Records (Android/iOS)

Tattoo appears in Diamond Records as part of Speedwagon's moveset, alongside Amato. In Action Battle, he can be summoned to attack once with his knife, or be summoned alongside Amato to help Speedwagon fight off opponents for a limited time. However, in Tactical Battle he can only be summoned to do single attacks.

Tattoo also appears on his own as an enemy character.
