Jump Novel
Jump Novel (ジャンプノベル , Janpu Noberu) is a novel magazine that released first released in the Summer of 1991 and was sold by Shueisha.
On April 1, 1993, Jump Novel Vol. 4 featured the first iteration of a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure novel chapter written by Hiroshi Yamaguchi, with cover, colored insert art and red part-color illustrations provided by Hirohiko Araki. The chapter would later be published as the second chapter of a light novel on November 4, 1993. The issue also featured 5 pages of an interview between Hirohiko Araki and famous Japanese rock musician Kenji Ohtsuki. Araki even made a drawing of the two that he then gifted to Ohtsuki.
History
With Weekly Shonen Jump's ever-growing success, 1991's Issues #3 and #4 of WSJ advertised the new brand of a novel magazine and was discreetly announced as a "ghost magazine".[2] The first issue of Jump Novel would fully release in Summer of 1991 with the magazine's demographic being aimed at a teenage audience and tried to sell its appeal similarly to Weekly Young Jump, another magazine of Shueisha's that was notable for its partially suggestive covers of Gravure models.
Other manga artists were also commissioned to draw celebrities or philosophers on the covers, much like Weekly Young Jump. The first cover featured famous actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, with following issues featuring Japanese novelist Natsume Soseki and Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. Eventually, the magazine would stray away from this business model and attempt to mix manga art with Gravure models on the covers.
Jump Novel released semi-frequently until Vol. 16 in 1999, when it was silently discontinued. The goal of Jump Novel was to create a new book label for novels known as "Jump J Books," which would get a physical release once enough material had been compiled by the manga creators. Jump Novel was to have Weekly Shonen Jump's popular catalog of manga artists at the time draw characters from their respective series along with collaborating with novelist authors, and physical volume releases were treated as spin-off material.
