Dio Brando's Mother (ディオ・ブランドーの母, Dio Burandō no Haha) is an unnamed posthumous tertiary character featured in the first part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Phantom Blood.
She is a mother of Dio Brando who is sent into an early grave by her husband, Dario Brando. Although she is only briefly mentioned in the manga, she plays a major role in the light novel JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE OVER HEAVEN, serving as a major influence on Dio and helping him form his idea of heaven.
Personality
Dio's mother is described by Dio as a noble, proud, pure and righteous person. In spite of her dire circumstances, she lived with pride and would often help those in need, often to her detriment.[2]
She believes in heaven and that to go to heaven one must live nobly and with pride. To those around her, this believe appeared to be quite obsessive and only attracted more mockery. Despite the almost constant scorn and even violence from her people around her she still attempts to instill righteous qualities in them.[2]
History
Phantom Blood
Little is known about her. She was a poor woman married to Dario Brando. Dio blames her untimely death on his father for making her suffer and "working her to death,"[1] though he disdained her as well for devoting herself to such a man.[3] The year of her death was between 1867 and 1880.
OVER HEAVEN
Dio's mother seemingly comes from a wealthy family. Later in life she moves into a poor town and marries Dario Brando.[2]
Although her and her family often suffer from starvation, she regularly gives away the little money or food she has to those in need, such as childen, the elderly, and sometimes animals. These acts of charity unfortunately only result in mockery, as the residents of the town consider such actions to be foolish. Despite agreeing with them, Dio Brando, being her son, could not stand people making fun of his mother; but whenever he would fight back, she would scold him, saying that he won't go to heaven relying on violence.[2]
To Dio she appears to be obsessed with the concept of heaven, as she takes every oportunity to remind him of it, which earned her a great deal of contempt from her son. Whenever Dario in his drunken frenzy beats her, Dio sees it as a justifiable punishment for her foolishness. In spite of the scorn from her husband and son, she always attempts to steer them in the right direction only recieving abuse in return. Once, as a result of the beatings, she miscarries.[2]
At one point Dio tells his mother that her way of life was impractical and that heaven does not exist. She, looking somewhat upset, explains to him that he'll understand it when he gets older, claiming heaven exists and there is a way to get there, so one must live for the purpose of doing so.[4]
Dio's mother dies abruptly. She is buried in a crude funeral by Dario and Dio.[4]
