She is referred to as Prisoner 696 (受刑者696, Jukeisha Roku Kyū Roku) in the anime.[1]

Appearance

She has black hair in the manga, and her eyes seemed obscure. She appeared to wear a pink jumpsuit. However, the anime gives her dark brown long hair with green eyes, and a green jumpsuit.

Personality

Not much is known about her personality. However, the anime adds an extra scene of her insisting her husband is dead.

History

Background

In 1965, she was sentenced to an all-female prison for 10 years, for bank robbery.

Vento Aureo

In the summer of 1967, 34 years before the events of Vento Aureo, she gave birth to a baby. This was two years into her 10-year prison sentence, and there were no men around the prison at all, yet she still managed to give birth. The mother insisted that she was pregnant the whole time, though in the anime the guards point out that she didn't even look pregnant earlier.

The baby couldn't be treated in the prison. Therefore, the guards had a priest of a village take care of the baby.

One day, the priest was making a garage for his stepson, when he accidentally unearthed the mother. Her mouth had been stitched shut, so she couldn't speak, and she didn't know how long she'd been there. The anime adds an extra scene of the priest turning to find his stepson behind him with a knife.

Afterwards, a fire burned down the entire village that night. No one, including the mother and the stepfather, came out alive. The son Diavolo's birth and history remains unknown.
