Johnny Joestar (ジョニィ・ジョースター, Joni Jōsutā), né Jonathan Joestar (ジョナサン・ジョースター Jonasan Jōsutā), est le protagoniste de la 7ème partie de JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Steel Ball Run, ainsi que le 7ème JoJo de la série. Il apparaît également en tant que personnage secondaire de JoJolion.

Johnny est ancien coureur-hippique prodige devenu paraplégique mais qui participe à laSBR afin de découvrir le secret derrière les Boules métaliques de Jayro Zeppeli qui semblent être les seules choses capables de guérir les jambes de Johnny. A travers le déroulement de la course, Johnny devient à la fois un utilisateur de Rotation ainsi qu'un manieur de Stand au moment où il acquiert Tusk.

Apparence

 

Johnny est un jeune homme de taille moyenne et de stature svelte. Il a les yeux clairs et des cheveux clairs tombant à hauteur d'épaule qui se retroussent vers les pointes.

Johnny porte toujours un bonnet étoilée et marquée au front avec une tache en forme de tête d'un cheval cabré vue de profil. Ses cheveux dépassent des trous de chaque côtés du haut, prenant une forme similaire à des petites cornes. Un fer à cheval est attaché à l'avant.

Johnny porte un pantalon avec un motif similaire à celui de son bonnet, ainsi que des bottes à éperons. Il porte généralement un haut de couleur claire à manche courtes avec une capuche coloré avec des bandes épaisses qui forment approximativement un harnais (auquel s'ajouteront des patchs en forme de cœurs ornant ses épaules). Une longue plume (bordée de noir avec une tâche noire à son extrémité) émerge de derrière son col. Il porte également des poignets rayés et étoilés.

Durant le flashback dans le SBR Chapter 42, Johnny porte un haut bleu étoilé à manches longues, une veste bleue claire est attachée autour de sa taille; et il porte un pantalon marron avec des bottes bleues.

Par temps froids, Johnny porte un haut à manches longues de conception similaire. Son col est bordé de fourrure, et il garde plusieurs plumes à l'arrière de son col.

En tant que paraplégique, avant le début de la course on le voit utiliser un fauteuil roulant; mais pendant la course,il est le plus souvent vu sur son cheval Slow Dancer.

Au cours de la série, l'apparence de Johnny évolue de façon à devenir plus réaliste; avec des cheveux un peu plus ondulés ainsi qu'un gabarit un peu plus complet.

Johnny Joestar est un ex-jockey dépressif, qui s'attache à l'espoir de récupérer l'usage de ses jambes grâce à la rotation et ensuite aux parties du corps tout au long de la Steel Ball Run.

Johnny est introduit comme un homme paraplégique distant dont la carrière a été ruinée après avoir reçu une balle dans la colonne vertébrale après avoir contrarié un passant à cause de sa vanité.[1] Après que Johnny ait été témoins des Boules métaliques de Gyro ainsi que de leur Rotation, et de la façon dont elles lui ont permises de se lever, il devient déterminé à le suivre et à lui faire enseigner la Rotation,[2] puis après avoir découvert les parties du corps qui feront bouger ses jambes de façon convulsive il cherchera, à les acquérir.

 
Détermination des ténèbres.
Johnny, entêté a l'intention de suivre obstinément Gyro puis le Corps. Sans tenir compte des risques ou des conséquences, Johnny se focalise sur son but et le fait passer au dessus de tout. Plusieurs fois, Johnny subira des blessures graves afin d'atteindre ses objectifs notamment en essayant de monter sur son cheval Slow Dancer ce qui lui vaudra de nombreuses ecchymoses ainsi qu'un morceau de bois lui transperçant la jambe ;[3] Malgré ses multiples échecs sa détermination à participer à la course ne faiblira pas. à l'inverse Johnny n'aura même aucune hésitation à devenir violent ou à tuer ses ennemis afin d'obtenir des parties du Corps. Gyro Zeppeli a mentionné cette "Détermination des ténèbres" que Johnny possède dans ses yeux montrant une impitoyabilité rendant Johnny capable de tuer de sang-froid.[4] Cet égoïsme immoral s'étendra toujours dans l'intérêt de ses proches et le suivra tout au long de sa vie, démontré des années après la Steel Ball Run, quand sa femme Rina fut atteinte de la maladie de pierre, Johnny volera le corps pour lui supplier de transférer la maladie à quelqu'un d'autre, ne se souciant pas de qui la recevra et souffrira à sa place.[5] Pourtant Johnny n'est pas complètement immoral, par exemple il refusera d'impliquer Lucy Steel qui est sans défense dans leur lutte pour le Corps[6] et se sacrifiera pour sauver son fils en effectuant un transfert de la maladie de pierre sur lui même.[7]

Pendant Steel Ball Run, Johnny était accablé par la dépression et un manque subséquent de confiance. Il se désignera notamment comme une personne inutile, La sombre perspective de la vie de Johnny lui vient de son enfance. Pendant son enfance, Johnny était un enfant timide mais gentil, adoptant une souris sauvage et l'appelant Danny. Bien qu'il fut effrayé de son père George Joestar qui était sévère, Il essayait de vivre en faisant ce qu'il était attendu de lui. Johnny idolâtrait son grand frère Nicholas mais quand il est mort, en tombant d'un cheval qui aurait été effrayé par Danny, Johnny culpabilisait pensant que la mort de son frère était de sa faute et qu'il aurait dû mourir à sa place. Il a ensuite cru au fil des années que le destin lui même prenait sa revanche sur lui pour tous les crimes qu'il avait commis et que tout le malheur qu'il recevait était mérité.[8] Résultant en son obsession que la bénédiction du corps ramènerait son karma à un état neutre autrement dit un état "zéro" à l'opposé de l'état "négatif" de sa malédiction cela explique grandement le manque de confiance de Johnny ainsi que ses crises de panique[9][10] Pensant que le destin pourrait lui enlever à tout moment l'espoir d'obtenir le corps. Quand son père l'a renié Johnny s'est fermé à lui, créant une façade de vanité afin de cacher la tristesse que ce rejet lui a causé[8]

La perspective de Johnny s'est grandement améliorée après sa rencontre avec Gyro, Johnny se sentit reconnaissant d'avoir rencontré quelqu'un lui ayant redonné de l'espoir et étabt profondément gentil avec lui qui a chérit cette amitié[11] à tel point que Johnny était prêt à abandonner le Cadavre pour sauver son ami.[12] Gyro a aidé Johnny à se débarrasser de son manque de confiance à lui tout en rassemblant les morceaux de cadavres, lui donnant assurance et optimisme.

Comme reflété dans les multiples ACTs de son stand Tusk, l'amélioration de Johnny fut progressive, la clé essentielle de son projet étant Johnny découvrant le Corps (ACT 1),[13] puis se défendant contre Soundman (ACT 2),[14] Symboliquement se purifier de ses fautes contre Axl Ro et être béni par l'apparition de Jésus Christ(ACT 3)[15] Et enfin acquérir le cadavre et récupérer l'usage de ses jambes. (ACT 4).[16] Bien que Gyro ce soit mort, Johnny a conservé un bon souvenir de tout ce qui s'est passé Pendant la course, Si Johnny était insensible envers tout le monde sauf lui même et Gyro il conservera tout de même un comportement poli mais froid envers les personnes qu'il a rencontré l'influence de Gyro le rendant légèrement plus amical envers les gens, aboutissant à son mariage avec Rina.[17]

Dans JoJolion, un flashback montre que Johnny a maintenu ce bonheur durant sa vie avec Rina.

Commentaire de l'auteur

Araki a personnellement aimé la relation Jonathan–Zeppeli de Phantom Blood et voulait la raconter à nouveau pour une histoire de passage à l'âge adulte plus longue.

Il a choisi de faire en sorte que Johnny et Gyro aient à peu près le même âge pour pouvoir être moins formels et plus polis que leurs homologues pour se rapprocher d'une relation plus similaire à celle de Joseph et Caesar de Battle Tendency. Les blagues de Gyro ainsi que l'usage trivial de la rotation des ongles de Johnny ont été inclus afin de refleter ce concept[18]

Johnny cherche tout d'abord l'apprentissage de la rotation de Gyro Zeppeli afin de regagner l'usage de ses jambes. Le plus souvent, Johnny canalise la rotation à travers son Stand, Tusk; éveillé tout d'abord grâce au pouvoir de La main gauche du cadavre, il le développera grâce à l'aide de Gyro. La forme de son stand varie, selon le type de rotation dont Johnny voudra user.

  • ACT1 est éveillé dans la Paume du Diable quand la partie du cadavre fusionne avec la main gauche de Johnny, son stand se manifestera par la capacité de mettre ses ongles en rotation puis de les tirer de façon très similaire à des balles, il peut faire repousser ses ongles en quelques secondes.
  • ACT2 se manifeste quand Johnny a tiré un ongle tout en essayant d'appliquer le Rectangle d'or dans son combat contreSandman. Malgré le temps de repousse plus long, les ongles possèdent plus de force ainsi qu'une nouvelle capacité permettant aux trous des balles de suivre leur cible pendant une petite période de temps.
  • ACT3 est la forme de "base" finale de Tusk et se manifeste quand Johnny se tire une balle imbué de l'énergie rotative du rectangle d'or lui permettant de faire passer des parties de son corps à travers les trous afin de tirer de différentes directions. Ce pouvoir fut éveillé grâce au conseil de Jesus durant le combat contre Axl RO.
  • ACT4 se manifeste de lui même comme le résultat de l'utilisation de Johnny du pouvoir de Slow Dancer combiné à celui du rectangle d'or, qui permet à Johnny de tirer des ongles de Rotation Dorée possédant une rotation infinie. ACT4 possède le pouvoir de forcer l'ouverture du mur dimensionnel Love Train de D4C et de piéger quiconque se fera toucher par lui à un seul endroit indéfiniment.

  • Équitation:Johnny Joestar est décrit comme un jockey de génie, le classant parmi les favoris de la Steel Ball Run . Ses compétences lui permettent même de chevaucher à travers différents type de terrains, et de pouvoir y défier un autre jockey de génie Diego Brando. Johnny possède de grandes connaissances de son cheval Slow Dancer, notamment ses capacités ainsi que ses limites, lui permettant de jauger ce dont sera capable Slow Dancer à tout moment.
  • Intelligence:Johnny Joestar se révèle être un compétent manieur de stand, étant capable d'exploiter les capacités de Tusk au maximum. Johnny Joestar a pu quelques fois user du terrain et du propre pouvoir de ses ennemis contre eux, et a été assez perspicace pour découvrir rapidement le pouvoir d'arrêt du temps du Diego Alternatif.
  • Habileté au tir:Lorsqu'il utilise Tusk, Johnny se révèle posséder une grande habileté au tir, étant capable de toucher de petites ou mobiles cibles, même lorsqu'il tire d'angles ou perspectives hasardeuses, comme lorsque Tusk ACT3 sépare sa main de son bras.

Famille

  • George Joestar I: Johnny avait une ralation complexe avec son père. D'une part Johnny a toujours recherché l'affection et l'acceptation de son père. En revanche, lorsque Georges a pensé "Dieu m'a pris le mauvais fils", Johnny fût profondément attristé et a choisi d'abandonner l'amour qu'il portait à son père, fermant son cœur. Johnny s'est confié à Valentine lui disant qu'il ne pouvait pas penser à son propre père de la façon admirative dont Valentine pensait au sien. Cependant vers la fin de la Steel Ball Run , George se montra dans la foule montrant à Johnny les bottes de Nicholas, se réconciliant enfin avec son fils. Johnny nomma son fils d'après son père Georges.
  • Nicholas Joestar: En tant que son frère aîné, Nicholas était l'exemple à suivre. Johnny l'admirait depuis l'enfance et se sent excessivement coupable de sa mort, pensant que l'univers l'avait maudit pour celle-ci.
  • Danny: Pendant que Jonathan et Danny (le chien) partageaient une enfance commune, cette souris fût un animal de compagnie temporaire pour Johnny. Quand Nicholas est mort, Johnny a fermement cru que Danny et par extension lui aussi, étaient les responsables de l'apeurement du cheval de Nicholas causant ainsi sa mort. Johnny conserve de bons souvenirs de sa souris mais également d'autres traumatisants, les invoquants ainsi quand Civil War l'affecte.
  • Rina Higashikata : La relation de Johnny et Rina a commencée après la course et durera pendant plusieurs années. Tous deux sont tombés amoureux l'un de l'autre peu après leur rencontre puis se marièrent, vivant ainsi une vie heureuse pendant un temps. Elle deviendra plus tard malade, et Johnny partira chercher le Cadavre en guise de remède. Son amour pour Rina est tellement fort, qu'il finira par se sacrifier pour la sauver elle ainsi que son fils.
  • George Joestar II: Johnny a pronfondément aimé son fils. Quand la maladie de pierre apparue chez lui, Part 8 SpoilerJohnny se sacrifia pour le sauver et confia qu'il avait été heureux de l'avoir eu dans sa vie.
  • Sa fille: La fille qu'il a eu avec Rina, elle apparaît seulement dans l'arbre généalogique des Joestar.

Amis

  • Gyro Zeppeli: Johnny et Gyro sont amis, et partenaires dans la Steel Ball Run mais aussi apprenti et maître dans l'art de la Rotation. Au début, la détermination de Johnny a piqué l'intérêt de Gyro le menant à observer Johnny monter sur Slow Dancer. Après la première étape, Johnny obtient le respect de Gyro, menant Gyro à faire de lui son apprenti dans l'art de la Rotation. Durant la Steel Ball Run, cet apprentissage évolue en partenariat, puis en une amitié profonde. Despite their opposing personalities causing regular clashes as to how to take on a difficult situation, Gyro and Johnny ultimately get along well and share many moments of friendship. Gyro notably likes to jest with Johnny and tells him bad jokes or miscellaneous songs that Johnny usually appreciates. Due to their regular battles, Johnny and Gyro fight well together, and see each other as valuable allies. Their friendship is such that either one is willing to put himself in danger for the other, and Johnny notably abandoned his Corpse Parts to save Gyro's life. In turn, Gyro often uses life-or-death situations as opportunities to help Johnny master the fundamentals of the Spin and evolve his Stand, Tusk. After Gyro's death, Johnny was devastated, a fact Vallentine attempts to use to goad him into sparing him and giving up the Holy Corpse. Gyro stands by Johnny in spirit even after his death, as Johnny returns his corpse to the Zeppeli family in Italy. Gyro's continuous support helped Johnny get out of his depression and enabled him to begin anew. The relationship of the two has similarities to Jonathan's relationship with Will or Joseph's relationship with Caesar.
  • Lucy Steel: Johnny and Lucy are allies against Valentine, but do not interact with each other much. Despite being Jonathan and Erina's counterparts, they never develop a relationship, unlike their namesakes.
  • Mountain Tim: Mountain Tim was first suspicious of Johnny as Benjamin Boom Boom tricked him into believing Johnny was killing competitors in the race, but both later became allies in the fight against the Boom Boom Family and Oyecomova. Tim notably taught Johnny about the Devil's Palm and Stands.

Rivals

  • Diego Brando: Johnny considers Diego a rival in his quest for the Corpse Parts. Due to Diego's own ruthlessness, Johnny won't hesitate to kill him if he gets in his way. At one point, Diego allies with Valentine to kill Johnny and Gyro, but it doesn't last. While their relationship is more positive than that of their counterparts, Jonathan and Dio, they are enemies all the same.
  • Hot Pants: Johnny considers Hot Pants a rival in his quest for the Corpse Parts. He realizes that she is a woman after Gyro kills Ringo Roadagain, but doesn't reveal her true gender to Gyro out of respect for her privacy. After Hot Pants steals Johnny's Corpse Part yet leaves him a small part of the Spine, he is curious about Hot Pants motivations for acquiring it.
  • Sandman: Because Sandman didn't go after the Saint's Corpse and acted friendly with the duo, Johnny didn't see him as an enemy. Ultimately, Sandman allied with Valentine and tried to kill Johnny with Gyro and take the Corpse Parts, they thus became enemies. Still, Sandman was indifferent to Johnny, only seeing an internal struggle among the white men he considered enemies that he could exploit.

Enemies

  • Funny Valentine: As both tried to gather the Saint's Corpse, Johnny and Valentine were enemies, but didn't interact much until their single fight. Because of his selfish motive, Valentine saw Johnny as unworthy of the Corpse and tried to kill him, though he treaded carefully with Johnny since Tusk was partly immune to his Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.
  • Diego Brando from Another Universe: As this version of Diego was recruited by Funny Valentine to take the Saint's Corpse from Johnny, it was only natural that the two were enemies. Diego was wary of Tusk, which could move partially in his stopped time, and likewise, Johnny learned of THE WORLD's power and also was wary of it.
  • Dr. Ferdinand: Dr. Ferdinand was an assassin and Stand-user hired by President Funny Valentine to murder Johnny and Gyro and gather the Corpse Parts. Using his Stand, Scary Monsters, Ferdinand attempts to transform Johnny and Gyro into dinosaurs bound to his will, and uses a similarly-transformed Diego Brando as a means to that end. 
  • The Boom Boom Family: A family group of three Stand-users, Andre, Benjamin, and L. A. Boom Boom, who use their talents to murder competitors in the Steel Ball Run, eventually targeting Johnny and Gyro as well. After a failed attempt to frame Johnny for the murder of several other competitors, they attempt to assassinate Johnny, Gyro, and Mountain Tim directly, failing when Johnny first develops his Stand, Tusk.
  • Oyecomova: Oyecomova is a Neapolitan assassin and terrorist who once encountered Gyro Zeppeli before he developed his Stand, Boku no Rhythm wo Kiitekure. He attempted to use this ability to assassinate Gyro, and Johnny in the process, but proved no match for their combined skills in the Spin.
  • Ringo Roadagain: A duelist working for Funny Valentine, Ringo Roadagain holds the philosophy that a true man must gamble his life against others in order to prove his worth. He notes that Johnny has the "dark determination" to kill if need be and thus would have a chance against him. Nevertheless, after incapacitating Johnny, he is defeated by Gyro.

Trivia

  • In the first chapter, his name is written in Japanese as "ジョニー", whereas from the second chapter on, it is written as "ジョニィ". Both have the same pronunciation, however.
  • According to Araki, he always wanted the protagonist of Part 7 to fight against nature itself while at the same time, having his struggles help him on a path to maturity.[19]
  • Johnny reveals to Gyro that he has a paraphilia for women with bug bites.[20]
  • Johnny's hat might be a reference to the mask worn by the character "Captain USA" from the movie Cannonball Run, as the name Steel Ball Run is a reference to said movie.
