Valkyrie (ヴァルキリー, Varukirī) is a 4-year-old stock horse with Australian roots and the horse that Gyro Zeppeli rides in the Steel Ball Run race. Gyro specifically chose the horse for its stamina and durability. As noted by Diego Brando, Valkyrie has a quirk where it sways suddenly to its left for every eight breaths it takes.[1]
After the race is over, Johnny brings the horse back to Naples.
The Mini Horses (手のり馬, Te Nori-ba, lit. Handheld Horse) are extremely small horses who are the mascots of the Steel Ball Run race. They march around Steven Steel's feet in the opening ceremony of the race before Steven gives his speech.
Slow Dancer (スロー・ダンサー, Surō Dansā) is an 11-year-old appaloosa and the horse that Johnny Joestar rides. Initially, it proves difficult to tame, but by the start of the race, it manages to warm up to Johnny and hoists Johnny onto the saddle by hoisting him and causing him to roll along its neck. Though Slow Dancer is old, it does not lack in stamina, and Gyro states that choosing the old horse is better due to the horse's experience, as opposed to the younger horses that hold much power but charge into danger without an afterthought.[2]
During a flashback in JoJolion, Johnny and Rina Higashikata can be seen riding a horse that appears to be Slow Dancer, although it isn't explicitly stated.[3]
Silver Bullet (シルバーバレット, Shirubā Baretto) is a 4-year-old Arab thoroughbred and the horse that Diego Brando rides.[4] It has a pale star-shaped mark on its forehead. Silver Bullet was last seen left behind near the train tracks in Philadelphia. Its fate is unknown; when Diego "disappeared" after the race, another Silver Bullet from a parallel world was found in New York and misidentified as the original Silver Bullet.[5]
Gets Up (ゲッツ・アップ, Gettsu Appu), also known as Brown (ブラウン号, Buraun-gō),[6] is a 3-year-old Mustang ridden by Hot Pants.[4] It was last seen by the train tracks near Philadelphia. After its rider's death, its fate remains unknown.
Hey! Ya! (ヘイ!ヤア!, Hei! Yaa!) is a 4-year-old quarter horse that Pocoloco rides.[4] Despite the lack of skill demonstrated by both the rider and the horse, Hey! Ya! manages to survive and propel Pocoloco to second place in the finish line after Diego Brando (this changes to first after Diego's "disappearance").
El Condor Pasa (エル・コンドル・パサ, Eru Kondoru Pasa) is a 7-year-old Appaloosa ridden by Mrs. Robinson. His rider is also named after a Simon & Garfunkel song.[4] His reins are decorated with the words 'TRUE LOVE', potentially referencing Simon & Garfunkel's cover of Scarborough Fair.
Roxanne (ロクサーヌ, Rokusānu) is 5-year-old Arab ridden by Indian racer Zenyatta Mondatta. His rider is also named after an album by Police. Zenyatta and Mondatta were Oingo and Boingo's names in Viz's American translation.[4]
Nut Rocker (ナットロッカー, Natto Rokkā) is a 5-year-old Arab ridden by Russian Racer Baba Yaga (a Mussorgsky song also covered by Emerson, Lake & Palmer).[4]
Black Rose (ブラックローズ, Burakku Rōzu) is a big black horse that is a bit sensitive. Diego Brando was leading the horse while Nicholas Joestar got on top of it. Nicholas intended to ride the horse in his next tournament.
Nicholas was capable of controlling the horse perfectly despite its size. However, he falls off the horse after some time and ends up dying. Diego says that he saw a white mouse scuttling near Black Rose's legs, which startled it and caused Nicholas to fall.
Parallel World Silver Bullet (並行世界から来たシルバーバレット, Heikō Sekai Kara Kita Shirubā Baretto, lit. Silver Bullet from a Parallel World) is a version of Silver Bullet brought from a parallel world alongside its rider, Parallel World Diego. It is a 4-year-old Arab thoroughbred with an identical appearance to its base world counterpart.
After Parallel World Diego's death, this Silver Bullet was found on the side of the road in New York. As its nose print exactly matched the print given by the original Diego Brando's Silver Bullet, it was misidentified as such, leaving the original Silver Bullet's fate unknown.[7]
