Hirohiko Araki has emphasized the importance of family to his characters,[1] as have several characters within the text of the manga.
List of Main Families
Details
The manga primarily details the adventures of the Joestar Family, of a hereditary tendency to unlikely, unfortunate circumstances and premature death.
During Part I: Phantom Blood, Jonathan Joestar, the first JoJo, begins his rivalry with Dio Brando, who also plays an important role in Part III: Stardust Crusaders and whose legacy has an indirect influence in Part IV: Diamond is Unbreakable and a direct one in Part V: Vento Aureo and Part VI: Stone Ocean.
- During Part I and Part II: Battle Tendency, members of the Zeppeli Family (William Anthonio Zeppeli and Caesar Zeppeli respectively) act as mentors, colleagues and friends of the protagonists, having on both adventures and a tragic end. Stardust Crusaders tells the story of Jotaro Kujo , the first JoJo not to bear the Joestar name.
- In Part IV: Diamond is Unbreakable, another family makes an appearance, the Higashikata Family where another JoJo makes his debut: Josuke Higashikata, son of Joseph.
- Part V: Vento Aureo contains a curious fact where Giorno Giovanna, becomes a fusion of two families, bearing the lineage of Joestar Family as well a classic personality and ambition in the Brando Family.
- During Steel Ball Run, the counterpart universe of part 1-6, these families reappear (except the Kujo family) taking important roles as well.
- During Part VIII: JoJolion, The Higashikata family becomes more important, where they have various new members and the Kujo Family appears to be changed with the Kira Family; when Holy married Yoshiteru Kira instead of Sadao Kujo.
Other minor families remain in the new universe, like Pendleton, Speedwagon, Hirose, Nijimura and Stroheim but do not populate to a significant extent.
