A Letter from the Past (過去からの手紙, Kako kara no Tegami) is the second story arc in Phantom Blood.
Summary
This is the year 1888, Jonathan and Dio have grown and are now students at Hugh Hudson Academy: Jonathan is writing a thesis to become an archaelogist while Dio is graduating as the top law students. Both are the darlings of the Academy and seem to have developed a great friendship. However they are still secretly hostile to each other. George Joestar has fallen ill for some time and is resting at the Joestar mansion. While Jonathan studies the Stone Mask in the library, he accidentally stumbles on Dario's letter who describes the exact same symptoms his father shows. Jonathan begins to suspect that Dio is poisoning his father and confronts Dio on this. Dio is indeed poisoning George like he poisoned his own father years ago with the help of Wang Chen, and is unable to shake off Jonathan's suspicions who departs for London to investigate the matter.
