Youth with Dio (ディオとの青春, Dio to no Seishun) is the fourth story arc in Phantom Blood.

Summary

The passing of George Joestar.

Dying from the stab wound inflicted on him, saying it is best for a father to die in his son's arms, George asks Jonathan to forgive Dio in his dying breath. The chief inspector blames himself for this event to occur, revealing that George learned the truth about Dio's father Dario Brando yet was too kind-hearted to not attempt to help the dishonest man and his family. As the inspector mourned that George's noble heart is gone, Speedwagon chides him that Jonathan inherited his father's nobility and praised the Joestars as the only upper class family he would not throw into the Thames. It was then that Speedwagon noticed Dio's body is gone, warning the inspector to stay away from the window before witnessing the man brutally murdered by a resurrected Dio.

Dio as a vampire.

With everyone shocked by the monster he has become, Dio wastes no time into picking off the constables with Speedwagon hurt in the process. Seeing the destruction wrought by the now inhuman Dio, caused by the Stone Mask he was researching, a fearful Jonathan knows that he must end the madness as he takes a spear from a nearby suit of armor. Beheading the reanimated corpse of one of the constables when he tries to eat Speedwagon, Jonathan deduces only way to kill Dio at this point is to destroy his brain completely. Dio intercepts and breaks the spear in two using only his hand, one half lodged into the wall as Jonathan carries Speedwagon away. Dio purses after them, gloating that he is now immortal. After a quick assessment of the foyer, Dio notices blood streaming from under a curtain and approaches while musing that Jonathan had chosen a fate befitting Polonius. But when Dio pulls back the curtain, it turned to be a trap as the vampire was consumed by the enflamed curtain while Jonathan and Speedwagon, holding an oil lamp, watch.

But Dio rips his way free, regenerating from his burn wounds while throwing a burning chair at the two of them. Jonathan pushes Speedwagon out of the way, telling him to flee while taking a sword from the wall while escaping to the second floor as the fire spreads across the Joestar Mansion. Amused by Joseph luring him away from Speedwagon, whom he considered a loose end, Dio walks up the wall after the trapped Joestar and tells him that he will die tonight: by the flames below them or by Dio's hand.

The fight's climax.

Jonathan continues up to the rooftop as Speedwagon realizes his friend's plan to get the flames consuming his home hot enough to burn Dio faster than he can heal, fearful that Jonathan's plan is essentially suicide. But as Jonathan falls with Dio all the way down to the inferno he caused, remembering every act he committed against him and his loved ones, he is more than willing to destroy Dio at the cost of his life. However, Dio knees Jonathan the ribs to break his hold, grabbing the wall as Jonathan falls to the first floor alone. Thanking Jonathan for his boon, now considering himself a god in all but name, Dio thinks to himself he can take over the world at his leisure. But Jonathan uses the bent iron spearhead to propel himself back up to Dio, using his belt to drag the vampire by his leg down with him.

Dio impaled and burning to death.

Stabbing Dio with his own knife as the vampire retaliates by breaking his arms, Jonathan yelled for his father to give him strength as he kicks one of the burning walls. The kick sends him and Dio in the direction of the statue of the Joestar guardian deity, the goddess of love. Dio is impaled, unable to escape as he is burned alive while cursing himself for underestimating Jonathan again. Jonathan ended up crashing out the window, found by Speedwagon who saw that his friend is still miraculously alive and determines that Jonathan won his fight with Dio.
