It's me, the dastardly Speedwagon! (おれぁおせっかい焼きのスピードワゴン!)[2]
ASBR Speedwagon title call.png
—Chapter 11: The Stone Mask, Part 4

Robert E. O. Speedwagon (ロバート・E・O・スピードワゴン, Robāto Ī Ō Supīdowagon) was confirmed as a playable character alongside Mariah, Pet Shop, and Diego Brando during the Street Date trailer.[1]

His moveset is similar to that of his Eyes of Heaven appearance, with modifications and new aspects added to better fit him in with ASBR's different style of gameplay.

Having voiced Speedwagon since the Phantom Blood anime, Yoji Ueda reprises his role in this game as well. As with the majority of the game's roster, voice lines for Speedwagon were either added or re-recorded.

Gameplay

Not only does Speedwagon fight with his trademark bladed hat and sledgehammer, but also with backup! Thanks to his unique style, "Ogre Street", Speedwagon can swap between the knife-wielding Tattoo and the Kempo Fighter (named The Asian in-game).

To put it simply, "Ogre Street" is a variant of the Stand style, but with a few boons that differentiate it. The first is that Speedwagon can swap between his friends off his ASBDPad6.png+ASBH.png without spending a bar of HH gauge. The other is that if Speedwagon is downed or hit during a command relating to his allies, the allies will still attack, but with the caveat that Tattoo and Kempo Fighter can be hit as well, which can cancel out their command. Such differences turn Speedwagon into a rather safe character, who doesn't need to worry too much about gauge management or fears of getting punished for whiffing or countered when it comes to ally commands.

It must be noted that Speedwagon has one command that doesn't change when switching: "Don't try to bluff, you rich little snot!". This multiple hitting projectile is an incredibly useful move, thanks to the boomerang property of it, the hat will punish those that try to jump it, whilst also being able to be flash combo cancelable.

Tattoo is an offensive "stance." It changes Speedwagon's ASBDPad6.png+ASBH.png into a double hitting launcher and his ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad2.png+ASBL.png/ASBM.png/ASBH.png into a downwards swing that bounces the opponent up and can hit them whilst downed. Tattoo's commands are very pressure-heavy and damaging. The first command deals immense guard damage and can easily cause guard breaks; the second command is an anti-air that crumples the opponent, serving as a useful combo breaker or maker for Speedwagon.

Kempo Fighter can be seen as a more defense-oriented "stance." ASBDPad6.png+ASBH.png becomes a roundhouse that is capable of reflecting normal projectiles; ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad2.png+ASBL.png/ASBM.png/ASBH.png turns into a short-ranged poke which, on top of his 'fireball,' grants Speedwagon some useful zoning tools. Kempo Fighter's first command is a useful stagger and combo tool, but does little on blocks. The second command is an anti-air as well, but knocks the opponent away rather than crumpling them, adding to the idea of this stance's focus on keeping opponents away.

Though one "stance" deals more damage than the other, both of their anti-airs deal only 45 damage, a pitful amount compared to other anti-airs.

As for Speedwagon's assist, he functions as a basic projectile assist, throwing his saw hat to deal good damage and put the enemy into hitstun. This assist can make him useful for characters lacking zoning tools or those who want a way to start a combo of a ranged assist or a follow-up, But with only one reversal stock, Speedwagon is a risky choice compared to other projectile-based assists like Guido Mista or Gyro Zeppeli, both of whom have two reversal stocks, with the latter having higher damage than Speedwagon.

With a safe playstyle thanks to the properties of Tattoo's and Kempo Master's commands, a universal projectile, access to an offensive and defensive playstyle, and many combo routes at hand, Robert E. O. Speedwagon is a well balanced fighter, despite having less health than most characters in the game.

Ogre Street (食屍鬼街(オウガーストリート))
ASBS.png ON GROUND
Speedwagon switches his active companion between Tattoo and Kempo Fighter (dubbed in-game as "The Asian"), altering his available abilities. Skills involving either can only be performed if they are in a ready position (i.e. behind Speedwagon). As they act separately from him, Tattoo and Kempo Fighter will continue performing their respective skills even if Speedwagon is attacked; Inversely, they themselves can be struck by the opponent directly to interrupt their moves, even if Speedwagon himself isn't hit. Of note is that attacks dealt by them will bypass melee-based counter abilities due to their being independent of Speedwagon.

Speedwagon can quickly switch companions if this ability is chained from This guy reeks! or He smells worse than vomit!, expending half a stock of Heart Heat to do so not unlike Stand users' Quick Stand ON Style ability.

This guy reeks! (こいつはくせえッー!)
ASBDPad6.png + ASBH.png ON GROUND
Speedwagon shifts forward and delivers a high kick, launching the opponent into the air. A command normal that can chain into Speedwagon's skills.

Attack type: High
Damage: 10 + 30 (40)

Rumble Mode (ゴゴゴモード)
Activates below 30% health
This mode is automatically activated once Speedwagon falls below 30% health. It increases his attack power, as well as the rate at which the Heart Heat Gauge rises, while also decreasing the rate at which the Guard Gauge drops.

ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad3.pngASBDPad6.png + ASBL.png/ASBM.png/ASBH.png ON GROUND
Speedwagon flings his bladed hat straight forward as a projectile, traveling a set distance before it reverses and flies back to him. The hat inflicts multiple hits, and can even strike an opponent as it returns. However, if Speedwagon is struck by the opponent, the hat will return harmlessly. The hat's maximum range and number of hits increases in ASBL.pngASBM.pngASBH.png order, but its flight speed is inversely affected. (Flash Cancel comboable)

ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad2.png + ASBL.png/ASBM.png/ASBH.png ON GROUND WHEN DOWNED
Speedwagon pulls out his sledgehammer and smashes down with it in a downwards swing, bouncing the opponent off the ground. This attack deals considerable Guard damage. Go nuts with those knives, boys! (おめえっちのナイフにまかせるぜ!)
ASBDPad6.pngASBDPad2.pngASBDPad3.png + ASBL.png/ASBM.png/ASBH.png ON GROUND
Speedwagon orders Tattoo to rush in front of him and deliver a thrusting stab, knocking the opponent off their feet. This attack deals high Guard damage, making it useful when trying to Guardbreak the opponent. Tattoo's travel distance and damage increases in ASBL.pngASBM.pngASBH.png order. Tattoo also has a hitbox as he travels forward, allowing this attack to strike twice when used close enough to the opponent. If Speedwagon is hit during this attack, Tattoo will still continue attacking. This skill cannot be Flash-Canceled.

Attack type: High
Damage: ASBL.png 15 + 50 (65) / ASBM.png 15 + 65 (80) / ASBH.png 15 + 90 (105)

ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad1.pngASBDPad4.png + ASBL.png/ASBM.png/ASBH.png ON GROUND
Speedwagon orders Tattoo to leap upwards and come down in a diving stab, functioning as an anti-air attack. This attack leaves the opponent in a crumpled state and vulnerable to attack upon connecting. Tattoo's travel distance increases in ASBL.pngASBM.pngASBH.png order. If Speedwagon is hit during this attack, Tattoo will still continue attacking, making this skill useful as a sort of combo breaker. This skill cannot be Flash-Canceled. (Comboable)

Attack type: High
Damage: ASBL.png 36 / ASBM.png 48 / ASBH.png 60

Martial Arts, the Eastern mystery! (東洋の神秘、中国拳法)
ASBDPad6.pngASBDPad2.pngASBDPad3.png + ASBL.png/ASBM.png/ASBH.png ON GROUND
Speedwagon orders Kempo Fighter to move in front of him and deliver a hand strike, staggering the opponent. Depending on the attack button inputted, a follow-up combo is then performed upon the attack connecting.
  • Light (ASBL.png): Kempo Fighter delivers only the initial hand strike, shortening the skill's recovery.
  • Medium (ASBM.png): Kempo Fighter follows up on the hand strike with a high knee, causing the opponent to crumple to the ground. (Comboable)
  • Heavy (ASBH.png): Kempo Fighter delivers the high knee then follows up on it with a roundhouse kick, finishing the combo by knocking the opponent back. (Comboable)

This skill cannot be Flash-Canceled, but Speedwagon may act again around the time Kempo Fighter delivers the high knee. To note, Kempo Fighter will not perform the follow-up strikes if the first hit misses or is guarded.

Attack type: High
Damage: ASBL.png 15 / ASBM.png 15 + 15 (30) / ASBH.png 15 + 15 + 45 (75)

If it connects, he launches backwards off the opponent and knocks them back a fair distance. Kempo Fighter's travel distance increases in ASBL.pngASBM.pngASBH.png order. If Speedwagon is hit during this attack, Kempo Fighter will still continue his animation. (Flash Cancel comboable)

Hand over all you've got! (身ぐるみはいじまいなッ!)
ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad3.pngASBDPad6.png + 2 ATK Buttons ON GROUND
Readying himself, Speedwagon steps charges forward in a shoulder tackle. If it connects, he orders his companions to attack: Tattoo steps from behind him and stabs the opponent, before the Kempo Fighter flies in from their other side in a dive kick. Speedwagon finishes the team attack with a downwards sledgehammer strike to knock the opponent away.

Attack type: High
Damage: 170

Get ready! Hand over all you've got! GYAAAAAAAH! Hiyaaa! How do you like that?! (覚悟しなよ! 身ぐるみはいじまいなッ! うきゃあああッ! アチャッーーッ! こいつでも食らいなッ!)

ASBDPad2.pngASBDPad3.pngASBDPad6.png + 3 ATK Buttons, or ASBG.png ON GROUND
Speedwagon lets out a battle cry as he wields his sledgehammer and swings it forward. If it connects, him and his two companions charge the opponent all at once to knock them down. As they recover, Speedwagon flips and launches his bladed bowler hat, curving along its path to strike them in the abdomen. The hat begins shredding into the opponent before a harsh noise confirms that it's reached bone as their excruciatingly pained face is shown. It finally cuts through its target and flies back to Speedwagon as he catches and dons it.

If Speedwagon misses the initial attack, he puts away the hammer and rubs the back of his head with a meek "Heh heh" (でへへー).

Trivia

  • When playing as Speedwagon's default costume and using "Don't try to bluff, you rich little snot!", he'll throw a bladed version of Will's top hat, despite his hat never being modified as such. Interestlingly though, Speedwagon will use his regular bouler hat in his GHA though.
