Manga Awards (漫画賞, Manga Shō) are presented to professional and newcomer manga artists for published/sumbmitted works. Throughout Hirohiko Araki's career as a manga artist, he has been one of the judges for several awards and his works have also received or been nominated for awards as well.
Summary
Manga awards have been routinely given out for several decades by numerous publishers and organizations, with the oldest being the Shogakukan Manga Award since 1955. These awards are either yearly or occur multiple times a year. Awards can vary to being split amongst multiple generic categories, specific genres, or for the quality of the work. Some awards can also go without a winner if the judges deem none of the works are deserving of a grand prize as opposed to the lesser prizes. Manga awards can be broadly grouped into those for the already published works of professional manga artists and those for works submitted by newcomers. Awards for newcomers can also have the benefit of having their works published/serialized in manga magazines and be judged by already successful manga artists such as Kohei Horikoshi, Eiichiro Oda, Takehiko Inoue, and Akira Toriyama.
Araki's Participation in Manga Awards
At the beginning of Hirohiko Araki's career, he had submitted his work, The Bottle, to the 14th Tezuka Award (手塚賞, Tezuka Shō) in 1977 using the pen name Toshi Arakino (荒木之 利, Arakino Toshi) when he was seventeen years old. He didn't win the award but was amongst the finalists. Due to not winning, the original work was thus not released to the public. Comments on the candidates were included in the 1978 Issue #1 of Weekly Shonen Jump. Hiroshi Motomiya, who was one of the judges, had commented on Araki and stated that he is a promising newcomer and would be interested in seeing an original story from them.[1]
His first published work, Poker Under Arms, was created as an entry for the 20th Tezuka Award in 1980.[2] No winner was selected for the award but his work had won the "Selected Work" runner-up distinction. At the awards ceremory, Araki had met Osamu Tezuka and shook his hand.[3] Araki later commented on his handshake with Tezuka and stated Tezuka's hand was warm and soft and that it left quite an impression on him.[4] His work had also received comments from Tetsuya Chiba and Osamu Tezuka.[5]
For his work with JoJolion, it won the Grand Prize in the manga division for the 2013 Japan Media Arts Festival[6] and was one of the nominees for the 26th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2021.[7]

General Review from Araki
