Storyline

Early Life

Born Haruno Shiobana, Giorno is the son of Dio (fathered using Jonathan Joestar´s body, which would make him genetically related to the Joestar family) and a Japanese woman. When he was four years old his mother married an Italian man, and they moved to Italy; hence Haruno Shiobana became Giorno Giovanna. His new stepfather, however, would often beat Giorno when his mother was not around. That, coupled with the fact that Giorno easily became the target of street gangsters, gave him very low-self esteem. However, one day as Giorno was walking home, he came upon a man covered with blood and lying in a patch of tall grass. Upon his discovery of the injured man, some men approached Giorno, asking him if he knew where the man had gone. Giorno lied to the men, as he felt the injured man was the same as him. Although Giorno already had Gold Experience at this time, he hadn't discovered it yet, only activating subconsciously. About two months later the man showed himself to Giorno again. He had survived and remebered how Giorno had helped him, telling Giorno that he would never forget what he did for him. Soon after that, Giorno's father stopped beating him and he became popular among kids his own age. It turned out that the man was a gangster; and he quietly watched Giorno from the shadows. To Giorno, this was the first time someone else had treated him like a human being and showed him respect. The trust that Giorno should have learned from his father was instead taught to him by others, and ever since he no longer has a scared look in his eyes.

Vento Aureo (2001)

When we are first introduced to Giorno, he is showing off his famous ear-canal trick in which he stuff his entire ear into his ear canal. From there on it's clear that Giorno seemly wants to take advantage of any stupid tourist, in this case, a newly arrived Koichi Hirose. At first Koichi, doesn't fall for Giorno's tricks but upon seeing the long line for a taxi he takes Giorno's offer. As Giorno tries to get away with Koichi's luggage, Koichi uses his ability to increase the weight of the tires. Giorno doesn't let this affect his plans and he runs away, only after using Gold Experience to turn Koichi's luggage into a frog. Giorno then meets up with Leaky Eye Luka, who demands a protection money from him. Giorno says he has no money, but Luka, who is unconvinced, takes Giorno's wallet and reveals a picture of Dio Brando. Luka becomes increasingly violent while Giorno insists that he has no money. Suddenly the frog, made of Koichi's luggage, returns and begins climbing up Giorno's pants. Upon seeing the frog, Luka orders him to kill it, but Giorno refuses. Giorno's refusal enrages Luka, but when he tries to strike at the frog with his shovel, the attack is reflected back, effectively killing him.

When we next see Giorno, he is spending the money stolen from Koichi, which leads to a small confrontation between the two of them. It is at this point that Koichi becomes aware of Giorno's Stand Gold Experience. Soon after, however, news of Luka's death has spread, which creates a few problems for Giorno; among them being an visit from Bruno Bucciarati while he is on the train. Bucciarati's interrogation eventually turns violent, forcing Giorno to reveal Golden Experience, despite his concerns about what would happen if Gold Experience gave life to an already living being. After a furious battle, Giorno confesses to Bucciarati, that he wants to become the leader of Passione. Upon hearing this and his realization of Giorno's good heart, Bucciarati tells Giorno that the way people join the gang is through a test put by Polpo, which includes keeping a lighter light for 24 hours.

Giorno's great ambition in life is to become a mafia boss (a "Gang Star"), and as such he eventually joins the mob squad Passione. Though he is its youngest and newest member, he quickly proves his mettle and eventually becomes the de facto leader of the group. Unlike typical mafia bosses, he wanted to give divested riches to the poor, giving him an agenda similar to Robin Hood. He eventually influences all of Passione but the boss, who later becomes their worst enemy.

Stone Ocean

While he never physically shows up, we do learned that Giorno wasn't the only son Dio had, he however is not aware of his multiple half-brothers. While Pucci attracted three young men who were all sons of Dio, Giorno was nowhere to be seen even if he had Dio blood in him. It could be do to his personality or the fact he never became aware of his origins, or combination of both.

Personality

Giorno used to be an unhappy and lonely child until until he befriended a gangster. Since then, he's become a more confident person. His clever mind helps him and the gang get out of tough situations, which also helps him win the support of the most stubborn members. While he may seem to be a troublemaker at times, he has a good heart and wants to help out anybody who has shown him kindness. And of course, he has no trouble punishing those that needlessly and intentionally hurt other people.

Trivia

  • Giorno's name written in katakana is not ゴルノ・ゴバアーナ (Goruno Gobana) or ギョルノ・ギョバアーナ (Gyoruno Gyobana), but as ジョルノ・ジョバアーナ (Joruno Jobana). This is to reflect the pronunciation of GioGio in Italian, as it is done using a "j" sound (as in jo or ji), not a "g" sound (as in gi or go) as spelled. Giorno's ジョ (jo) in his name would look like being separated into ジ ョ (jiyo) when pronounced in English.
  • Giorno's hair used to be black and worn in a bowl cut style. However, when his stand powers awakened, his hair became gold and spiked with spiral-like bangs.
  • Since Giorno is Dio's son, his battle cry is also "Muda Muda Muda Muda...Muda!". Giorno also pulls off a "WRYYYYYY!" during his fight with Cioccolatta.
  • Giovanna is a typical Italian female name.
  • Hates repeating things more than once, saying its a waste of energy.
  • Giorno has the odd ability to stuff his entire ear into his ear canal.
  • His favorite musician is Jeff Beck and his favorite musical is Les Misérables. Favorite foods include chocolate, pudding and octopus salad; dislikes chicken and especially duck.
  • The notation "@@@" refers to Giorno's unique hairstyle and is often used by fans when referring to him.
  • A common aspect of Giorno is wearing ladybug-themed jewelry, and his Stand also hosts ladybug insignias. As ladybugs symbolically represent good luck throughout Europe, and is considered bad luck to kill one, this can represent Gold Experience's powers of returning damage back to the attacker of its creations.
