Sorry about this... I know you just happened to be the driver. But the land that was handed down to me by my ancestors takes precedence.
—Acca's Grandfather, The JOJOLands Chapter 23: Dolphin Bank's Debt Collection, Part 2

Acca's Grandfather (アッカの祖父, Akka no Sofu) is an unnamed tertiary character featured in the ninth part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, The JOJOLands. His last name is Howler (ハウラー, Haurā) and his first name is unknown, but it is implied to be based on the letter "F" due to the Howler family's naming scheme.[3]

He is the sixth head of HOWLER Company and the grandfather of Acca Howler. He protects his ancestor's land on the north slopes of Hualalai, officially legalizing the family's ownership of the land by making a deed. He also informs Acca about the importance of the Lava Rock.

Appearance

Acca's grandfather is an elderly man with a broad face, a Fu Manchu mustache, and a muscular build. His head is shaved on the sides with a short bowl cut hairstyle. He often wears Hawaiian clothing, such as a suit with a floral-patterned turtleneck underneath. When killing Monte Brutto, he wears a hoodie. When he is watching TV with his grandson, he wears a loose-fitting T-shirt, shorts, slippers, and a floral lei around his neck.

Personality

Howler is portrayed as a patriarch who deeply values his family's legacy and ancestral land. He has a strong sense of personal honor, willing to take extreme measures to protect what he believes belongs to his family. After assassinating Monte Brutto, he also murders the man's driver so that there would be no witnesses to his crime, though he apologizes for having to do so.

Howler is shown to be gentle with his family, particularly his grandson, Acca. He teaches Acca about their heritage, emphasizing the importance of respecting their family's history and heirlooms. Howler is also practical and forward-thinking, recognizing the changing times with the rise of digital records. Despite having the mindset that nothing in the world lasts forever, he secures his family's future by legally registering their land to protect it from future disputes.[2]

History

At some point, Howler became the sixth head of the HOWLER Company. In 1967, a fire devastated his family's farm, nearly making them bankrupt. There was a dispute between the Howlers and the government representative Monte Brutto. Monte Brutto argued that the Howler family's ownership of their land was legally dubious because it was made through a verbal agreement before Hawaii was annexed by the United States, and that notably the water source situated on the land should be under state jurisdiction. Monte Brutto had ties to the mafia in Hawaii and it was them who set fire to the Howler family's property. Howler retaliated by assassinating Monte Brutto. He drove slowly in a truck in front of Monte Brutto's car. When Monte Brutto ordered his driver to overtake the truck, Howler shot him through the cheek as their vehicles were beside each other. As Monte Brutto's car flipped over, Howler apologized to the driver since he wasn't involved with Monte Brutto's schemes, but protecting his ancestor Latrato's land took precedence. He then grabbed a rock and killed the driver with it.

Howler eventually regained his wealth by selling a Tintoretto painting worth 70 million dollars and other valuable treasures that his family collected over the years. Thanks to the Lava Rock stored in the family's box along with the valuables, all of them eventually returned back to the box, with the Tintoretto painting bouncing around for over 10 years. One day, Howler called his young grandson, Acca Howler, to his side to watch TV with him. He showed Acca a deed of their land, which he took the opportunity to make to have a legal basis on the ownership of the farmland. Moreover, he told Acca about the treasure chest in which the family had been keeping precious heirlooms and explained that the heirlooms could be sold off if he's ever in a pinch.[2]

Trivia

  • Based on the naming scheme of the Howler family, Acca's grandfather's name is implied to be based on the letter "F", which would give him the name Effe Howler (エッフェ・ハウラー, Effe Haurā), following the letter's Italian pronunciation.
