Howler (Latrato)
Howler (ハウラー, Haurā) is a posthumous tertiary character featured in the ninth part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, The JOJOLands. His first name is unknown, and his original surname was Latrato (ラトラート, Ratorāto), but he changed it to Howler when the United States annexed Hawaii.
Howler is the founder of HOWLER Company, which was initially established as "HOWLER Farms" when he discovered the underground waterways on the northern slopes of Hualalai. He is also the third great-grandfather of Acca Howler, who is the sixth and current head of his company.
Appearance
Howler is a man with long, dark hair styled in a slick, wavy, swept-back manner. He has a slightly muscular build, a wide nose, and a light mustache.
When he first arrived at Hawaii, he wore a sailor hat, hoodie, and pants with rolled up cuffs. Later, he is shown with a long sleeve shirt. In another appearance, he wears a wide-brimmed hat.
Personality
Howler is an adaptable and perservering individual. After surviving a shipwreck, he quickly integrates with his new environment, falling in love with a local woman and earning the approval of the Hawaiian royal family to start a farm on their land.
He is also resourceful and intuitive in regards to working with land. Instead of building vertical wells, he deduces there must be rain water accumulating in the gaps between the volcanic rocks. Accordingly, he devises a strategy to dig tunnels horizontally into the slope of the mountain instead.[1]
History
Latrato was born in Italy in the 1800s, where he was a sailor. In 1843, he was involved in a shipwreck and washed ashore in the Waipio Valley on the island of Hawaii. He was aided by a local island woman, with whom he eventually fell in love with and married.
Latrato managed to secure the trust and approval of the Hawaiian royal family. With their permission, he settled on the northern slope of Hualalai, a region known for its harsh, arid conditions. Despite the formidable challenges of farming on volcanic rock and the lack of surface water due to the permeable volcanic soil, Latrato innovated. He believed that beneath the volcanic surface, there were pockets of rainwater trapped between the rock. Instead of digging vertical wells, he spent months excavating horizontal tunnels into the mountainside, hoping to find underground reservoirs of water. His perseverance paid off when he successfully tapped into hidden underground waterways, turning barren land into fertile meadows. Hence, he founded HOWLER Farms.
As Hawaii became part of the United States, Latrato changed his family name from 'Latrato' to 'Howler,' reflecting the English translation of the Italian word for "howl."
Howler's legacy lived on through the subsequent generations of his family. His descendants continued to build his farm, developing it into a water resource and water-power generation infrastructure company in the 1960s. They expanded their business into port rights, transportation, and even the arms industry, eventually having assets worth $50 billion.[1]
