To Jotaro's dismay DIO redirects his attention to the now injured and unconscious Polnareff, which puts Jotaro in a tough position; he can either move and reveal himself to save Polnareff but lose his opportunity to trap DIO, or he can maintain the deception by allowing his beloved friend to die at the hands of the vampire.
He opts to shift his fingers slightly just as DIO is about to decapitate Polnareff. DIO spots this out of the corner of his eye and his fear of Jotaro causes him to jump back, fully guarding himself. Although the lack of movement on Jotaro's part thereafter causes him to doubt the validity of what he saw, rationalizing that it may have been his imagination.
