—Baki Hanma, New Grappler Baki Chapter 188: Revival

Baki Hanma (範馬 刃牙 , Hanma Baki) is the main protagonist of the Baki the Grappler franchise. Baki is a high-school student living in Tokyo, and in secret, the "Champion" (チャンピオン, Chanpion) of the Underground Arena in Tokyo Dome.

Baki is the son of Yujiro Hanma and Emi Akezawa and since birth, Baki's mother has pushed Baki to train in order to eventually surpass his father, Yujiro, and defeat him in battle. This culminates in a one-sided bout where Yujiro defeats Baki with ease. Seeing Baki being beaten nearly to death by his father, Emi challenges Yujiro to a fight and dies shortly after. Swearing to take revenge, Baki travels across the world for 2 years, continuing to train and returns to Tokyo to fight in the Underground Arena, quickly becoming its champion fighter.

While Baki doesn't possess any supernatural abilities, his Shadow Boxing ability is powerful enough to visualize opponents that can be seen by onlookers.

Appearance

Baki is a muscular, slightly short boy whose appearance drastically changes throughout the series as he gets older. Baki's first initial appearance at the beginning of Baki the Grappler is that of a childlike demeanor, with short hair that is long in the back. Throughout the entire franchise, Baki is shown to have a severely scarred body all around due to the diligent and uncompromising training he puts himself through, with the only exception being his face. Another noticeable feature of Baki's appearance is his mole just above his upper lip on the side (a physical trait he inherited from his mother, Emi Akezawa).

In the Childhood Saga, when Baki was 13, his hair was shorter, with a spikier style, and had an orange color (most likely, this was because he was trying to be more like his father).

In New Grappler Baki, when Baki is 17, his appearance reverts to its initial version at the beginning of Baki the Grappler, with a more mature look. A carefree, almost weary demeanor replaces his childlike one. His hair is now much longer, going below his ears.

Baki's appearance as an 18-year-old in Baki: Son of Ogre is not much different than his previous look in New Grappler Baki. The only changes in his appearance are that his hair is now more curly, and he has grown slightly taller.

Due to his training, Baki is very muscular, flexible, and durable. His physique results from constant, rigorous combat training and is far beyond that of a typical adolescent. His bones and muscles are also described as being better than those of an Olympic sportsman.
